Pros: Incomparable Ride Cons: Needs vigilence in unkeep
I traded my 1993 Toyota Corolla DX Wagon for a 1990 Vanagon Carat Weekender two years ago when both cars were pushing the 135,000 mile mark. "Geordi" (as in La Forge) is now pushing 165,000 miles and going strong if I overlook the inevitable...

Pros: Ample room, solid handling, just fun to drive Cons: Maintenance required, Heads tend to leak, non VW repair shops can be risky
I own a 1990 Volkswagen Vanagon GL. It has a 2.1 liter water cooled engine. I bought it at 105,000 miles for $4200 and now it is at 159,000. Some repairs were necessary, but overall I have truly enjoyed the vehicle. It has a great deal of space inside...

Pros: Hauls just about anything, great for trips, still like the styling. Cons: Gutless 4 cylinder motor, not exactly a city car. The Bottom Line: The Vanagon is a people/cargo hauler that do most thing very well, but it's the small motor that keeps it from being a great van.
I bought this van at a dealership back in '95. It was priced at $13,500 at the time, which was pretty much at the limit of what I was going to spend. The mileage was at 89,000, but it sure didn't show it (I guess it was garaged most of the time by the...

Pros: Excellent road feel & German style handling, good power. Cons: Would rather drive this car over my Viper, Clk Mercedes convertible or Suburban.
I've had my 90 Vanagon Carat since new and its never been better. Of course I've done a few upgrades (since it's part of the family.) Upgrades include a new Go Westy 2.4 motor, a new Go Westy custom geared 5 speed tranny, So African 15" alloys with So African big brakes, rear Audi disc brake conversion, Koni adjustable shocks with Eibach progressive rate springs, larger sway bars front & rear, Short shift kit to name a few.

Pros: Big interior volume, large slider door for hauling gear. Bed in the back! Cons: Takes a little attention to maintenance. Gutless in todays world.
We have a SYNCRO all wheel drive 7 passenger, with the rear facing jump seats. Our second vanagon, the first being an '86. Really like the car, but it is not a daily driver. Handles great in the snow, and seats 7 no problem. Gets 18-22 MPG with the 4 cylinder waterboxer engine, which is just the right power for driving on the snow. Rear seat folds down to a very comfortable queen size bed.
