Pros: Reliable, starts up, very little maintance needed, good gas mileage Cons: Expensive parts, noisey on the freeway, rough ride The Bottom Line: Highly recommended to those on a budget, that can't afford the japanese sporty cars.
Five years ago I purchased a used 91 Escort GT for $2000. Drove good and fast, so I purchased it. Three weeks after I buy it the tranny dies. Called around and the tranny was gonna cost me anywhere from $1200 to $2400 rebuilt. So I purchased a used ... read more

Pros: Gas mileage, dependability, dependability, dependability. Cons: none The Bottom Line: If I could go back to 1991 I would buy 25 more Escort GTs. Is it possible to actually be in love with a car? If so, I am.
It is the year 2005 and I still own my 1991 Ford Escort GT. It has been the only car I have ever owned. My parents bought it new and kept it in pristine shape until they gave it to me in 1995 when I turned 16. My dad was super protective of the car so ... read more

Pros: Cheap to buy/run/insure
Decently reliable
Relatively easy to get service with parts widely available Cons: Tie rods
Not Sexy
Not quite as refined as a Honda or Toyota The Bottom Line: These cars may not be sexy, but they are practical, decently reliable, cheap to buy, cheap to insure (nobody wants to steal them) and cheap to run.
My 1991 Ford Escort was an LX 5 door hatchback with the 5 speed manual and the base 1.9L SOHC 4 cylinder engine (88HP @ 4400rpm). I purchased this car off my brother in May of 1999 for $1500 and sold it in November of 2002 for $375. It had 275,000KM ... read more

Pros: I used Phil's lemon-aid car buying guide. Cons: The rust in the 91 fords seems to be a design problem, The Bottom Line: This is a great car just passed the required clean air test, so have still another couple of years left in her, and hoping for another 100,000kms
I have an 91 escort LX 5 speed 1.9--- 5 door with sunroof air tilt steering cruise control. I bought the car in 93 for 11,000 incl..taxes, it had 30,000kms on it. I have replaced the clutch twice at about $1,200 each time, and the timming belt ... read more

Pros: Holding up well, spunky acceleration, still running strong Cons: Power features are on their way out, dash cracked The Bottom Line: The "little engine that could." Minimal maintenance/repairs for its age. Great gas mileage. Worst thing is that I love it too much to drive it on a regular basis.
I have a 91 Escort LX, "Nelson," with 148,650 miles. I bought this car in 1995 with 60K miles and he has been amazing.
The Good:
Optimized acceleration in the first 2 gears for spunky pickup off the line.
I highly recommend spending a ... read more

Pros: Gas saver, small, good looking, cheap, and easy fixer. Cons: its a Ford, noisy motor, alignment is shot for life, unpredictable. The Bottom Line: It sucks, way too many problems and it is unpredictable.
well, i personally havent had a good experience with this car even though it is my moms. I drive it daily and i absolutely hate it personally. We changed the tranny with a 1983 4 speed tranny. It has pick up speed to it. Now the motor makes a bearing ... read more

Pros: Good mileage, transport Cons: For me...minor electrical problems The Bottom Line: If you need something to get around, this is a very good choice.
I got my '91 Escort about a year ago and haven't really had any major problems with it. Other than a battery dying on me, it's been fine as a way of getting around.

Pros: easy acceleration, good gas mileage, easy shifting Cons: quite a few repairs The Bottom Line: we had quite a few problems, but we bought it used with high mileage, i wont blame the car itself... but it does become shaky when the miles pile up.
we bought a used 1991 Ford Escort in 1998 after my sister rolled our Dodge Caravan(see related review)... the car was appealing to us for the following reasons 1) it was stylish... a nice bright blue, no rust, good body.. 2) it was in good running ... read more

Pros: Very fun to drive, surprisingly peppy engine, has aged very well. Cons: Suffers from typical problems you would expect from a decade-old car. The Bottom Line: Great car! I've seen cars newer than this that are ready for the junkyard. The 1991 Escort is as dependable as American cars get, and is extremely fun to drive!
FINAL UPDATE (11/26/04) At 192,000, I finally traded this car in. In it's final year, I put over 40,000 miles on it, driving 180 miles round trip to work every day. No major problems during that time... I will miss it. UPDATE TO ORIGINAL REVIEW ... read more

Pros: One tough car! Plenty of room for its size Cons: Uninspiring The Bottom Line: This is a reaction to bashing this car. Can't really recommend a 11yr old car with 100k+
Just to disagree, we bought a 5spd '91 Escort new. Driven mostly by my wife, we put 180k on the car. My wife tried hard to kill it but it kept coming back for more. We used this car almost like a truck, hauling things like an 800lb 5 station workout ... read more
