Low Performance and High Maintenance

by shurman100
Aug 02 '08

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Seating position, suspension, audio system, looks
Cons: Engine, transmission, interior fit and finish.
The Bottom Line: If you have to have a V6, get the 3.8L. I would personally spring for the V8. Don't get a Firebird made before 1995.

In 1996 I was looking for a 87-93 Mustang GT to replace my 1987 Ford Tempo when I found a mint looking, black 1994 Firebird 3.4L V6 auto with 32K miles. After much research and discovering that the insurance for a 19 year old on a GT would cost almost as ...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Excellent car.
Cons: Slippery when wet.
The Bottom Line: Needs no more than routine maintenance.

My dad is a die-hard chevrolet man, and he was encouraging me to buy a camaro. But when I got a look at the firebird, I knew I had to have one. (And it's basically the same car, right?)

I bought my firebird new when I was 19. It is a 5...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: High speed acceleration, sleek design
Cons: Winter/wet handling, heavy, maintenance costs when/if needed
The Bottom Line: A very fun car if you don't mind sacrificing some practicality and are willing to pay more for upkeep.

First of all, this is the 5.7L V8 Trans Am GT I'm reviewing, not the V6 version. I'll try to give as thorough a review as possible, so I'll break this up into several categories:

Normal Driving:
For day to day drivers, the practicality...

Gets better with age

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Fun to drive, sporty, good looks.
Cons: Bad in crash tests, expensive fibreglass bodyparts

I bought my 1994 Pontiac Firebird Trans am last year (July 1999). On the spedometer, it was registered at 68k miles. So far to date, the car has it's quirks, as all cars get with age. The check engine light comes on sometimes when the car runs a lean...

This bird flies!

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Good handling, low profile, fun to drive
Cons: Weak window motors and steering wheel radio controls
The Bottom Line: This car has been very reliable and fun! Mine has 115,000 miles, I've had very few problems, and it's still going strong!

I bought my 1994 Pontiac Firebird back in 1998 for $10,400. It had 58,000 miles on it and was in excellent condition - it had obviously been babied. I think that early maintenance has really paid off, because after another 58,000 miles, it is still...

4 years and I still love this car

by lizzywatson

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Beautiful, durable, great pickup, very comfortable to drive.
Cons: Dry climates only, tough to tune up, parts are expensive
The Bottom Line: Buy this if you want a nice summer car. For snow, rain or rugged terrain, it's not the best option

I bought my 1994 Firebird nearly 4 years ago and I still love this car. It drives like a cruise missile, looks wonderful and has always been reliable. So far, I've only had to replace the alternator and the catalytic converter. A stunning car when it's ...

Firebird, style, profile and reality

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Beautiful styling, aerodynamics and acceleration.
Cons: Difficult to work on, squeaks and rattles.
The Bottom Line: Nice looking quick accelerating hot rod weekend car but would not want to drive it every day.

In 2002 my wife was interested in a late model Firebird. She looked at new ones at dealer ships and test drove ones that were just a few years old. They were nice cars but they cost more than we willing to spend and thinking of the deprecation and...

Pros: Great styling
Cons: Just about everything else
The Bottom Line: If you are looking at a 1993 or 1994 firebird save your money and buy a 1991 or 1992 instead you won't be disapointed like I was.

During 1999 when everyone else was worrying about the Y2K bug I was busy looking for a new way to get around since I had bottomed out the oil pan on my 1991 firebird and was in need of new wheels. After an exhaustive search of Los Angeles used car ...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Looks, feels, rides, handles great
Cons: No room for a lot of passengers

When I bought the car I had just sold my 1984 Camaro Z28 and was looking for something with more power and better looks. I was deciding between a 3000GT and a Dodge Stealth. However, my heart was set on a Firebird. So I picked up a bargain trader and...

Pros: Acceleration; sports handling; ergonomic
Cons: None

I have never had a better vehicle than my 1994 TransAm with 5.7L and 6-speed manual. The overall quality of the vehicle is nearly perfect. At 89,000 miles, the vehicle has NEVER seen a repair facility. Only the headlamp motors had to be replaced. (1 at...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Blast to drive, power, handling, features, stereo kicks
Cons: too many mechanical woes

I have always loved Trans Ams. Lets get that out of the way first. Second, I have not figured out why someone would buy a V-6 version of this car, because it defeats the whole purpose of the Firebird.

Okay, now to the meat. I purchase my...

1994 Firebird...My experience

by scoobynat
Mar 01 '02

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: VERY reliable, many great options, good on gas, sporty:)
Cons: Steering controls stopped working, car is too big, bad cup holder for driver
The Bottom Line: As said before, I would definitely recommend this car because it is very reliable and trouble free. I have 116,000 miles on it now, and it's still great.

Ok, I knew when buying this car it would be big, but I didn't know how big it was until I tried to park it in a college town. Although it is a VERY reliable car and fun to drive, it is a pain to park it. I won't even attempt to park it downtown...

one awesome ride!!!!!!!!!!

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes
Pros: Handles like a charm.Has got more power than I can handle OR DESERVE.
Cons: Like others before me, does not handle well in wet weather, and very pricey maintenance.
I bought this around 4 years ago used and still love it.
This is the BEST car I've owned to date, and I've had a lot of cars.I bought this car used. You WILL NOT believe the price. The girl sold it to me for $1800. She wanted a new Honda. It needed a door on the passenger side, which I got off ebay for $200. I've put on a Ram air hood and a split spoiler on it and got it painted black with multi- color metal flake. It looks like a 2002 instead of a 94. Maintenance wise, I've had a new EGR valve put on it, tune ups are EXPENSIVE. other than that, it's been behaving. I know one day it will slowly start going, but that's what my savings is for. I will not get rid of this car. So Far, this has been a great investment. It gives me 22 mpg town and 27mpg highway. And it's a V8. A+++ on this beauty. As for wet weather, I've just learned to respect car and not speed.
