Pros: Smooth ride, quality, reliability, affordable Cons: stereo is so-so, a little underpowered The Bottom Line: If you don't like car payments or high car insurance but still like driving, get a used Protege.
Bought mine for $3200 with 54k miles with automatic from a wholesale lot open to the public. Car wasn't spiffed up by any means and the body has it's share of little dings and scratches.....but I could care less. I put 4 new Yokohama Avid T4's on it, ... read more

Pros: Reliable, good gas mileage, roomy for a compact car. Cons: Firm front seats, cramped engine bay. The Bottom Line: I feel that Mazda builds great cars and is underrated by the public. I hope my Protege continues to run this well in another 150K miles.
I bought this car new in March of 1996. It was a closeout, a 1995 Lx 5 spd. I currently have 153K miles.
My experience over seven years of use has been very positive. It always starts and the original battery lasted 3.5 years. I've had no ... read more

Pros: Great little car Cons: Weak engine. The Bottom Line: You'll never have to worry about this car. Just keep the oil changed, check the fluids, and it'll be there for you.
I bought this car in Feb. 1998. It was my first dependable (I hoped) used car. It has not let me down. It runs as well now as it did when I first got it, and I've put over 40,000 miles on it (it had 41,000 when i got it, so now it's over 82,000 miles). ... read more

Pros: Low Price, Surprisingly Roomy, Great First Car Cons: Slightly Small Trunk
I recently bought my daughter a used Mazda Protege. Our family has always trusted Mazdas, having owned 3 626's and a pick-up. Just as an insight into the quality of the Mazda brand, I owned a 1988 626 that I sold to my sister in 1993 with 80,000 miles ... read more

I love my Protege. It's a 1995, 4 door, LX model that I bought in February of 1999. I was looking for a car in the $10,000 range and searching up and down "The Motor Mile" in Austin, TX for the right car at the right deal. When I saw this car, ... read more

Pros: Stylish, roomy, reliable, good gas mileage! Cons: Sluggish, bad placement of radio/cupholders & firm seats. The Bottom Line: If you don't mind the fact that it isn't filled with pep, consider it.. but those with "lead foot", might want something with more get up & go!
We've had our 95 Mazda Protege LX for over a year now. So far it's been a great little car. We've done some minor work on it (new tires, tune up..) as prevention but it hasn't forced anything on us as of yet. I'm a fan of the Protege line and would love ... read more

My husband and I bought our Mazda in '95 as a program car. It had 8,000 miles on it. We were expecting our first child and needed a four door car. It worked out o.k. for that but when you put a rear facing infant seat in the back it doesn't leave a ... read more

We bought our 1995 Protege DX in 1997 with 30,000 miles on it. We were looking at the Corolla and Accord as well but the Protege won out because of its lower cost and similar reliability record (based on Consumer Reports). My wife and I really enjoy ... read more
