Pros: Mechanically sound, handles well, fun to drive Cons: All those little conveniences become inconvenient when you have to repair them! The Bottom Line: If you are looking for a very reliable car that is fun to drive, and you don't mind fixing the odd quirk, I would first and foremost recommend this car.
I acquired my 1995 Jetta GLS through my parents as my first car. While I was really wanting to hold out for my '67 Beetle to be restored (and it still hasn't been), I wasn't about to turn down a Jetta. My father is a car dealer, and he got mine for a ... read more

Pros: Quick, fun to drive, great gas mileage, roomy, dependable. Cons: Some cars just get old and start to break after 105,000 miles. The Bottom Line: This car is a great first car for a new driver, especially if you're learning stick, too. Definitely try to pick one up if you can get a good price.
I bought a 95 Jetta GLS in August of 2002 so that I'd have something to drive to school and work. So far it's been a great car with a few minor malfunctions (the synchro on third gear is failing, my alternator went, and I've had to have the clutch cable ... read more
