"Sure, I'd love to buy a car with a defective head gasket."

by JeannaMarie
May 03 '00 - Updated Aug 11 '02

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 2.0 Recommended: No

Pros: fun to drive with great gas mileage
Cons: pre-99 Neon's have a defective head gasket
The Bottom Line: Not durable enough for the price! If you really must have this car, then make sure the head gasket has been replaced with the new redesigned part!

We purchased a 96 Neon in November of '98. I loved the way the car handled and it was so cute. The Neon was comfortably in our price range and seemed to be the most car for our money and the one we purchased made me feel like we bought a safe car. I was...

1996 Dodge Neon - Not Just Cute For Customizers

by darqueneon
Jun 02 '04

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Quick, responsive handling, phenomenal fuel efficiency, aerodynamically superior, broad aftermarket support
Cons: Poor interior build quality, notorious head gasket on certain Neons, hit-or-miss reliability
The Bottom Line: Awesome car. Yes, everything rattles - I built it for power. A great car for tuners and hotrodders to work on, and still a great value for moms.

I bought my 1996 Dodge Neon Sport Coupe in late '99 after doing a lot of homework. I was particularly loyal to small Chryslers after all the abuse my old Plymouth Horizon took, and I had already driven Neons and fallen in love with the quick, responsive ...

Funky little car (is that good or bad?)

Jul 22 '01 - Updated Jul 23 '01

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: economy, durability, cargo space
Cons: visibility, automatic trans
The Bottom Line: Little imperfections, nothing big. Don't recommend the automatic transmission. If you know that the head gasket has been replaced, consider it as a commuter car with occaisional trips.

My girlfriend has a 1996 Dodge Neon, but whenever we go somewhere together in her car, I drive. After 2 years of discovering lots of little things, I figured I have enough to write an opinion on.

Engine:

Fuel Economy

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 2.0 Recommended: No

Pros: inexpensive, lots of room, safe car
Cons: defective parts that the company won't cover

The car that is appealing for it's cute bubble-y looks isn't so engine appealing we have discovered. My fiancee owns a 1996 Dodge neon and for the past two years it has been nothing but trouble and we should have purchased a new car for all the money...

Headaches and Cramps

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 1.0 Recommended: No

Pros: It's a cute, speedy little car
Cons: I can't even count how many times it's been in for repairs
The Bottom Line: Avoid this car at all costs! The headaches and stress it creates are not worth it!

I bought my first new car in August of 1996. The Neon was cute and affordable. It also only had 10 miles on it. I was so excited!

My 1996 Dodge Neon is a Highline coupe and is black with grey interior. It has a 5 speed manual transmission. It...

Pros: Good fuel economy, inexpensive
Cons: Too noisy, Poor crash test result, high risk of theft, Poor handling, poor interior design,

I bought my 96 green Neon in 1998 as my first car. I just got my Driver's license and I was thrilled to buy my own car. I saw this bright green Neon standing at the car dealer waiting to meet a new owner. The price seemed good and after several...

Pros: Peppy, price, mileage
Cons: Head gasket, electrical problems

I have had a Neon Highline 4-door since 1996 and overall I am pleased! Although my wife hates it with a passion because it makes here nautious but she has excuses for everything...another story! I will admit these cars have a notorious history with...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: mpg, reliability, handling
Cons: windows

I bought my Neon in April of 96. From the start I enjoyed the car and am still driving it. I bought a very basic car with a standard transmission (for financial reasons) and have not had any trouble with the transmission at all. My Neon has averaged...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Fun to drive, decent mpg
Cons: pre 99 prone to headgasket failure

I bought this vehicle on 1/17/96 because my 90 Lemans was showing it's age.

I happen to drop off a friend at the local Dodge dealership so he could pick up the used car he bought. I was looking around and really liked the looks of the Neon and...

Ah, The Mighty Neon...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Fun, fun, fun. Stylish, comfortable, excellent handling
Cons: Not for everyone. Not as reliable as some
The Bottom Line: I take care of my car, and so far it's taken care of me.

I haven't seen a car that will match the Neon dollar-for-dollar in the miles-of-smiles, or overall design categories. While I'll admit that the Neon is not without its shortcomings, it is indeed a well-engineered car. I have not seen a car in the last...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Fast, Fuel efficient, Reliable...
Cons: None
The Bottom Line: My Neon ACR (competition package) is fun, efficient and has been absolutely reliable. Maintain it well and it won't let you down.

My 1996 ACR Neon was quite a find -- in 4/1997, I had read about this racing and competition package Neon, but most Dodge dealers knew nothing about it. So, after quite a few phone calls, I finally located an ACR at a dealer, drove the hour to get...

2 thumbs down

May 24 '00 - Updated Dec 01 '03

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 1.0 Recommended: No

Pros: sporty, cute, good gas mileage
Cons: bad brakes, engine problems, leaking gaskets, paint peels off
The Bottom Line: If I could go back and choose something different to buy, I would. Don't let the nice looks suck you in! Poorly made car.

I bought my 1996 Dodge Neon a few years ago thinking is was the greatest thing since sliced bread. Boy was I wrong! Although it is a very "cute" car and has a sporty feel to it, which is the reason why I bought it, I believe it is a badly made vehicle. ...

Pros: gas mileage, affordability,speed
Cons: brakes, leg room

This being my first car, I love the Neon. After Purchasing it for $3,750 with 65,000 miles on it(practically a steal),it is in very good shape, I had to take it out on the country roads. Being a 22yr old male that I am I had to test how fast I could make...

Pros: well....its an affordable kid's car
Cons: problems, problems, problems

I am the not-so-proud owner of a 1996 Dodge Neon. I bought this car as my first car, hoping that if I bought a cheap new car I wouldn't have the worries of breaking down while at college that a used car comes with. I figured a new car should get me...
