Small with Large Capabilities

by
Apr 24, 2008 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Very dependable and very easy to fix. Very easy to get parts for when needed.
Cons: Small towing load and when these trucks get older they needed constant attention to details.
The Bottom Line: This is a good truck to own because it gives you the capability of a truck with great gas mileage. It also is very reliable and easy to fix.

Many people are saying that Dodge is the truck of the future and that no other truck compares to the new small Dodge pickups that are on the market. But this writer disagrees with this statement. The new dodge trucks are alright but can’t quite ... read more

Worst Ever!

by
Mar 23, 2007 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 10 Recommended: No

Pros: You won't have to worry about deciding where to put your money.
Cons: I'm still making payments on this bloody thing!
The Bottom Line: Problems with almost every system on it. Stay away! I'll never buy another Ford in my life!

This is positively the worst truck I have ever owned. I always drove Nissans before this, but I sold my old 93 Nissan ex. cab, and bought a newer 96 Ford Ranger STX model. This is the fancy model. It has Automatic, 4X4, all power options including ... read more

1996 Ford Ranger Supercab 4.0 V6 4x4

by
Mar 9, 2007 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: 4.0 V6 plenty of power Handles well on/off road Manual Locking Hubs
Cons: Seats in supercab are a joke Power seats aren't durable
The Bottom Line: If you are looking for a good daily driver and don't want a massive F-150, it's a great deal for the money.

I just recently purchased a 96 Ranger Supercab with the 4.0 V6. I have previously driven the smaller engine models and would never recommend those except to people that use their trucks like a small car. The 4.0 is more than adequate for ... read more

Dec 25, 2003 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Good milage, nice bed, fun for 2WD.
Cons: LACK OF POWER, whineing, hard reverse and 2nd gear
The Bottom Line: bet this was an amazing car new, but for 137k, I think its still going strong, especially for an american car, which seems to die earlier.

This is my first car and I have had it for about 6 months. So far, I have really enjoyed it.as with everything in the world there are its share of problems. It has about the power you would expect from a 2.3 liter truck. it is also amazing considering ... read more

Love My Ranger

by
Nov 9, 2003 - Updated Nov 11, 2003 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: good looks; combination of price and dependability
Cons: I haven't experienced any.
The Bottom Line: Consider how many of these vehicles are on the road and how long they have been there, with no hint of an end in sight.

My Ranger is a 1996 XLT, 3.0 V6, A/T. I wanted either a Ranger or Mazda because I think they are the best looking small trucks on the road outside of a Tacoma, but without the Tacoma price tag. I bought it used with 64,500 miles. I had some reservation ... read more

The Bottom Line: I would recommend this vehicle for reliability and legroom.

I bought my 1996 Ranger XLT, extended cab, 2WD, auto transmission, in November, 2002. I drive it to and from work every day. The truck is extremely reliable and comfortable and is a pleasure to drive and own. It has great legroom (one of my key ... read more

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Very reliable, cheap to own.
Cons: 4 cyl is adaquate but wish I had some reserve power for passing and hills.
The Bottom Line: Excellent transportation for low cost. Perfect for the homeowner that does occasional project but also wants reliable and comfort for commutes.

I was looking for my first truck in 1997 and after looking at all the makes, I settled on the Ford Ranger. I chose the Ranger because of the Consumer Reports Rec and the price. Went to a dealer, in Feb 1997, that had leftover 1996 models. ... read more

Much better than the 95s and earlier

by
Apr 24, 2001 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Practical, economical, fun. Very low maintenance costs.
Cons: Not available as a convertible.
The Bottom Line: A very practical work horse. Great when hauling loads, yet economical as a daily driver.

Compared to the 95s and earlier, the 96 model was greatly improved. It has Ford's newer engine computer, the EEC-V and it is OBD-II compliant. It continuously monitors and adjusts the engine for optimum performance. No more frequent tune ups. This truck ... read more

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: lots of power, lots of room, reliable
Cons: loss of resale value, gas milage

I was in the market for a small truck, I looked around and I found that the ranger offered the most for your money, although I later found that the resale on these trucks drop very quikly. For less then I could have bought a toyota standard cab ... read more

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Not a bad value.
Cons: Less reliable than it should be.
The Bottom Line: Not as reliable as Toyota Tundra; Ford cuts too many corners.

Following is the original review I wrote a little more than three years ago. I still have the truck, and (as of 3/2004) it has nearly 100,000 miles on it. Since I wrote the review, I've revised my opinion of the truck, mainly because of all the stuff ... read more

Nov 26, 2000 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 30 Recommended: Yes

Pros: small, convenient
Cons: not good except on paved roads in good weather

I needed a vehicle in a hurry. The Ford Ranger looked good, and my main need was a small truck. It pulled a trailer full of household goods without any problem. The main drawback is how it handles on winter roads. It doesn't have the weight to grip ... read more

Interestingly enough, I had the exact same check engine light problem as the other reviewer of this truck, although I have the 4-cyl version. Other than that, this is one great truck, I've had no other problems with it. I'd recommend this vehicle to ... read more

Replaced my '87 Ranger with this '96, and have no regrets. This one is loaded, except for 4-wheel drive, which I don't need. At 55,000 miles the only item requiring a trip to the dealer was the 6-disc CD player that quit - under warranty, thank ... read more
