Pros: Lots of goodies -- standard Cons: Maintenance nightmare The Bottom Line: There are so many comparable cars in this class that the Mystique is a perennial loser in every category except color names (Champagne, Pumice, etc.).
Stylish. Comfortable. Reasonably priced. For these reasons, the Mercury Mystique was a wonderful choice for a middle-income, young couple (no kids). Ford brought America a car that was wildly successful in Europe as the Ford Mondeo. Touted as it's...

Pros: Comfort Cons: Overall reliability
I bought my 96 Mystique brand new in February 1996 because I loved the look, the price was right and it drove nice. Unfortunately, I am totally disappointed that I ever bought this vehicle. The lemon problem is something that I've been plagued with...

Pros: lotsa fun toys, wonderful ride, fun to drive Cons: likes to throw major parts The Bottom Line: Avoid the Mystique and the Ford twin. 'Sides you'll look silly siting in a goofy looking car.
My first clue that this was going to be a bumpy ride was when my mechanic called it a Mercury Mistake. He said that Mercury had combined parts from Mazda and Ford, shook it around and came up with this car. I too, had been impressed with the "New World...

Pros: Good car. Cons: Mercury is discontinuing it.
When you have a model that is identical to another- in this case, the Ford Contour and Mercury Mystique, why not go ahead and buy the model you are more comfortable with? In my case, I would opt for the Ford Contour, which I actually do own, and I have...

Pros: Handling Cons: Number of Recalls, Durability The Bottom Line: It rides great, but other than that it just falls apart too much.
I bought a 1996 Mystique about 4 years ago. It truly drove like a dream. The suspension, and handling were great, but other than that I was truly let down. Here are the reasons why:
1. Where I live, my windshield gets foggy a lot, and instead...

Pros: good size, attractive, fun to drive, good gas mileage, reliable Cons: uncomfortable front seat, a little crammed, small shake when braking, engine noise when accelerating
I haven't had this car for too long now, but after I bought it I started having people tell me I made a huge mistake. I've heard this car been called the "mercury mistake." But honestly, I don't think that's true at all! This car has been fun to drive, reliable, and just an overall nice car. The only problems I've had is the drivers side power window is broken and expensive to repair. I have long legs, and I have trouble getting comfortable in the drivers seat. If I move the seat back, I have enough leg room but it feels like I'm reaching for the wheel. If I move the seat up to a comfortable reach, my knees hit the bottom of the wheel. Thats just my experience with long legs however. Overall, I like this car.
