My RS took care of me for 7 years

by
Dec 29, 2002 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Base engine good acceleration; Good looks; Awesome ergonomics
Cons: Lots of road noise; too much body roll; RS has few std features
The Bottom Line: Very good engine! Below average craftsmanship and overall build quality was also only average.

I bought my red '96 Eclipse RS in Jan of '96 and just traded it three days ago (Dec of '02) for a Mazda 6--I'm 26 now so it was time for a more "mature" car. Throughout those 7 years, and only 54,000 miles, I never had one problem with the Eclipse. ... read more

Fun and sporty car

by
Aug 29, 2002 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: This car is sporty and comfortable.
Cons: Hard to see out of mirrors, bumpy ride
The Bottom Line: I would recommend this car to anybody looking for a popular sporty car. Although the non turbo models are not speedsters, it's still a blast to drive.

I recently purchased a 1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS. Although it was not a turbo like I wanted, I decided to go for it anyway. I had my mind set on buying one and there are so few around where I live. One day, I went out on my usual hunt and found a ... read more

Author's Product Rating: 20 Recommended: No

Pros: Beautiful body style
Cons: Reliability poor - embarrassing at times
The Bottom Line: If you don't mind a high maintenance car that looks great, then the 1996 Eclipse is for you.

I loved my 94 Eclipse, but when I saw the new body style of the 96 I had to have it! My 94 Eclipse was very reliable. So I thought the 96 would be as well. The first 6 months were great. Then, at 6 months old the 96 Eclipse had problems starting up. ... read more

Love it

by
May 31, 2002 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Sexy, smart styling. Dependable engine and other hardware
Cons: Bottoms out easily, has trouble when driving thru standing water
The Bottom Line: Get the 1996 and not the later models if you are concerned with looks.

I figured the best way to get a convertible was to ask my wife to pick one out. This was a hands-down winner for both of us. This thing moves gracefully and powerfully, especially when launching myself onto the on-ramps for the freeways here ... read more

Author's Product Rating: 10 Recommended: No

Pros: Sporty, Good looking car!
Cons: Unsafe and a Money sink Hole
The Bottom Line: This car is very bad. It is breaks down and has problems, is unsafe, and has horrible crash ratings!

I was so excited to get this sporty fun car. I bought an RS but it still had more power than the average civic or escort. It ran good for about three months or so and then I began to have trouble with it. I was at a stop light getting off the freeway ... read more

It sucks!!! Don't buy it!!!!

by
Mar 1, 2001 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 10 Recommended: No

Pros: sporty, not expensive to purchase but you get what you pay for
Cons: costly repairs, backseat not large enough for any adult, not reliable
The Bottom Line: I don't think the issue here is the year of the car - it is the car itself.

I purchased a 1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse in August 1998. It had 19K miles at the time and when it reached 25,000 miles the transmission had to be replaced. At 33,000 miles the head gasket blew. I only drive my car 5 miles a day to a train station. The car ... read more

I just bought a 1996 Eclipse RS. I love this car. The previous owner took pretty good care of this car. He lowered it and added a few stickers that I am in the process of removing, but overall the car is mostly stock. Which I like. The body ... read more
