Author's Product Rating: 30 Recommended: No

Pros: good handling(behaves great in snow),good gas mileage,
Cons: lazy, lazy engine, some interior design flaws and again lazy, lazy engine.
The Bottom Line: If the power is not a concern than go give it a try probably you'll like it,otherwise look somewhere else DO NOT even bother.

Driving a Toyota RAV 4 it's definitely not a driver's dream nor his nightmare.I Live in a mountain area were the winter brings a lot of snow, for that reason sometimes I have to live my front wheel drive sedan parked and get in my wife's RAV 4.The best ... read more

Not bad for the price, but stay away if you like advanced manueverability and handling

by
Jun 16, 2001 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 20 Recommended: No

Pros: Compact Size, Durability
Cons: Horrible Engine/Acceleration, Too Light, Design of 2001 Rav4 MUCH better, Sound System Bad
The Bottom Line: Not worth it. For a few thousand extra find a better designed (and newer) car.

I bought the Rav4 expecting a great SUV. I was sorely disappointed with this car. I would recommend the modern Rav4s, but do not buy this model. I have numerous problems with the car. When I am driving on the highway, it sounds as if one of the ... read more

A "Chick's" Opinion ...

by
May 6, 2001 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: durable, easy to drive, looks cool
Cons: a little small for 4-5 passengers + ANY cargo
The Bottom Line: SUV on the outside, car on the inside. For those who like to drive something that looks a little bit "cool," but don't want to deal with "Cool Car" problems.

When I was shopping for a car last year I queried several mechanics as to what I should consider - I informed them my husband and I aren't "car people," we don't do too many of our own repairs, we don't like extensive upkeep and we don't always even ... read more

Wonderful vehicle! - the energizer bunny...! (2/09)

by
Apr 24, 2001 - Updated Feb 28, 2009 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Maneuverable, reliable, versatile... consistently durable.
Cons: Rear door is fragile. (1/09 - no other CONS after 13 years)
The Bottom Line: Buy one. An older used one is the bargain of a lifetime! Reliable, durable, comfortable, versatile and fun. Even quieter and more comfortable with Kumho tires.

When I first saw the RAV-4 on my way to work in 1996 I knew that it was perfect for my wife. We usually have owned a 4x4 of some type but found most of them to be lunky, hard to maneuver and park, and terrible on gas. My wife likes the driver height in ... read more

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Fun to drive; Great handling
Cons: Slightly underpowered

I bought a used 1996 Toyota RAV4 this week and have already decided it is one of the most fun to drive vehicles I have ever owned. I got the two-door, 2WD model which has the shortest wheelbase and tightest turning radius of any of the RAV's. The ... read more

More Utility Than Sport

by
Aug 11, 2000 - Updated Mar 9, 2003 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Reliability, "cool factor"
Cons: High maintenance costs, rip-off manufacturer warranty, interior noise
The Bottom Line: Probably the best mini-SUV in reliability and value-for-money.

My wife and I bought our '96 RAV4 4D automatic used in early '97. RAV4 was the only sub-$20k car both my wife (5'5") and I (6'2") could sit in and drive without spending three minutes adjusting the seat and the mirrors. We live in the boonies but commute ... read more

Jul 8, 2000 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Great for hauling
Cons: Damages easily

I always research a car before I make a purchase. Before I bought my RAV 4 I owned a Toyota Camry and put 200,000 mile on it. My Toyota experience as with my three Honda experiences were excellent. I bought the Rav 4 because I loved the way the hatch ... read more

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Fun to drive, good headroom, 4WD
Cons: Bad legroom, not for serious off-roading

The RAV4 is a great car but if you're buying a used 1996 make sure that the recall work to the front differential has been done or at least checked for damage. Toyota issued a recall notice to all known owners about a year ago asking them to come into a ... read more

Why I, an Automobile Ignoramus, Love My RAV4

by
Jun 21, 2000 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Absolutely comfortable, wonderful handling, relatively safe and economical
Cons: Rear legroom

I admit it. I know next to nada about cars in general. In fact, I consider it an achievement that I can check my oil and levels on my battery, transmission, and windshield washer fluid. Still, that doesn't mean that I can't love my RAV4, and I am ... read more

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Very Reliable, Good handling.
Cons: Small backseat, little acceleration.

This vehicle is very reliable. Besides normal wear and tear, adding new brakes, and routine oil changes, I have had to do nothing to this car. This car handles well in rain or snow. You do not get the feeling that you will tip over around curves like ... read more

LOVE MyRAV4!

by
Dec 24, 1999 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Reliable car that combines many of the benefits of a car, a truck, and a SUV
Cons: Wide turning radius, not a lot of space in the back seat area

I am a small person, five foot. But I needed a car that could do "big" things, like get around in the snow (I'm in WI) and haul the occasional piece of furniture or pile of lumber, etc. But I still needed it to be a family car, since I have ... read more

by
Dec 18, 1999 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Efficient, fun to drive, versatile, Cost effective
Cons: Needs a little more leg room, but OK

The Rav4 by Toyota is not only a fun and versatile vehicle, it can also be an economical one as well. The three years in which I drove one were probably the most varied in terms of use I will ever experience. My RAV4 was a two-wheel drive with automatic, ... read more

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Toyota quality, great styling
Cons: Interior noise, minor comfort design flaws

Sep 24, 1999 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: looks, reliability
Cons: AC controls, cup holder

I have a 1996 RAV4 that I got new. I was the first person in our area to get one. I'm petite, 5'4", and this vehicle appealed to me because it's not one of those bulky, clunky SUVs that you need a step stool or a boost to get in to. It is easy to ... read more
