Pain in the Astro

by
Nov 24, 2003 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 20 Recommended: No

Pros: Solid construction, loads of power, interior well made.
Cons: Dealer service, gas mileage, excessive tire wear.
The Bottom Line: A very mixed experience with this van. I will not buy one again.

In all fairness to GM, I must admit that we purchased our '97 Astro because it's what we wanted (at the time). We purchased it in '98, from a national rental agency, with 28K miles on it. The roads were filled with Voyagers, Caravans, Windstars and ... read more

Chevy Astro not for everyone

by
Nov 20, 2003 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 30 Recommended: No

Pros: Heavy duty truck like ride, cargo room, towing capability, used Astros are inexpensive.
Cons: Reliability, quality of parts, gas mileage, new Astros depreciate quickly.
The Bottom Line: I recommend the Astro with reservation. Those whose priority is utility should like it, but those who insist on Toyota-like quality and reliability should look elsewhere.

Ten years ago I owned a 1985 Astro and decided to buy yet another Astro last year. I found a used 1997 LT (Luxury Touring) model that had 72k miles and bought it. I bought the Astro because I really wanted a large vehicle that I could haul the ... read more

I've tried the rest and the AWD Astro is the best !

by
Feb 18, 2003 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Built on truck frame, AWD can handle any road conditions, friendly on trips, reliable engine.
Cons: My knee hits door lock switch, not much leg room for driver and front passenger.
The Bottom Line: The "AWD" Astro is a mans van, that can handle all terrain yet looks nice enough to take friends out on the town.

I've had 2 Dodge caravans and they both gave me front suspension problems. While buying auto parts 1 day, I noticed that there was such a thing as an All Wheel Drive minivan. After much research I found that Chevy Astro/GMC Safari are minivans that are ... read more

Love my Astro Van

by
Jun 25, 2001 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Great ride, lots of space, power to spare, easy to remove seats
Cons: theft lock on the stereo
The Bottom Line: I would definitely recommend the purchase of a Astro Van. I will myself stick with them for many years to come.

This is my second Astro Van and once again I'm thrilled with owning one. I go to camping events which require me to haul a lot of over sized items and the Astro has no problem taking it all. Plus the fact that if I did run out of room inside it has ... read more

Not Recommended for Mothers

by
May 22, 2001 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 30 Recommended: No

Pros: Drivable
Cons: wears down easily
The Bottom Line: Not a woman friendly van

My van is spacious and roomy. It can fit up to 8 people safely with seatbelts. I am recommending this van for big big families. It is pointless to have this van if you have a small family because you would be wasting your money. I'm not a ... read more

Drives great, but poor overall vehicle

by
Mar 7, 2001 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 20 Recommended: No

Pros: Comfortable, great stereo, great for cross-country drives, GOES IN THE SNOW
Cons: Big, bulky, gas-guzzler, blind spots, cheap manufacturing, quirky problems
The Bottom Line: It will go anywhere, but the overall construction is shoddy. Little positive nuances are outweighed by several major and minor problems.

This vehicle was purchased new and nearly loaded. It is the LS model. I'll start this review with the positives and then cover the negatives. Let me start by saying that I live in Western Pennsylvania. Throw rain, snow, sleet, hail, winds, ... read more

Author's Product Rating: 20 Recommended: No

Pros: Comfortable, roomy and heavy duty
Cons: Transmission, tire wear and break problems

My 1997 Chevy Astro van is the second one I have owned. I just love the look of the van and the fact that it is so roomy. My three kids say it is very comfy, even for the 6 feet 2 inch one. I also have a baby who is in a car seat and it is very easy to ... read more

A True MiniVan

by
Oct 11, 2000 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: truck-like abilities
Cons: cramped front foot wells

I like my 1997 Astro Van because it truly is a MiniVan not a front wheel drive glorified station wagon. It replaced my wife's 1987 Chevy Truck. It's built like a truck and you can work it like a truck. I have hauled cars on trailers behind it on 3 ... read more

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Roomy, easy to drive
Cons: Dash AC is a little weak

I bought my 1997 Chevy Astro Minivan in January 1998, just after my youngest daughter left for college. That left only me and the dog, riding around town in our 'glorified station wagon.' (my husband has his own vehicle, maybe someday I'll write about ... read more

On August 1, 1997 I bought the above vehicle from a Chevy dealer On September 6, 2000, it developed the serious defect of abruptly shifting from 1st to 2nd gear after approximately 30 minutes or 17 to 20 miles of driving. Upon, taking it to the ... read more
