It isn't aging gracefully, but it still goes like mad!

Author's Product Rating: 30 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Lots of power, durable engine & transmission, great MPG
Cons: Harsh ride, interior not very durable, engine and road noise
The Bottom Line: It's a fun car to drive, but not one especially suited for rough roads or long trips.

When I want to know how a car really performs, I take it on a nice, long road trip. Such was the case with my mother-in-law's Cavalier Z24, which she's owned for a few years now. The car has some 90,000 miles on it, but with gas prices topping the ...

Author's Product Rating: 20 Recommended: No

Pros: fuel economy, fun to drive
Cons: cheap, unreliable, pain to fix at home
The Bottom Line: I would not recommend this car unless you can find one with few miles and only plan on keeping it a couple years

This is a cheap car that is fun until it gets some miles put on it. I owned this car for 3 years, bought it with 120k and put 35k on it. I always kept it maintained with all scheduled maintenance done. At 150k, everything started to go on the car: ...

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Reliability, Large Trunk for a Compact, Effective Air Conditioning, Value
Cons: Fuel Economy, Interior and Exterior Fit & Finish, Interior Space, Mechanical Refinement
The Bottom Line: It's not perfect or overly refined, but it's a good value, and it's bulletproof, something that makes up for its quibbles. Recommended.

My Dahlia Blue Chevrolet Cavalier Sedan, with 104'000KM, was purchased new in February 1997 from a local Chevrolet,Oldsmobile,Cadillac Dealer, and has been with me ever since. It is the Base Sedan model, so no lavish appointments but it'll get you from ...

Author's Product Rating: 30 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Gas mileage, price, cost of parts low.
Cons: Limited interior room, cheap interior trim
The Bottom Line: Try and find a lower mileage one and you'll probly get an awesome deal.

I purchased my 97 Z24 about a year ago for about $2,500. I consider is to have low miles as it is 10 yrs old with 76,000. Its pretty much loaded: keyless entry,PW,PL,power sunroof, nice 16" wheels and the Z24 ground effects. For what the car is, I ...

97 Chevy Cavalier Not Worth the Money!!

by treble102
Nov 19 '06

Author's Product Rating: 10 Recommended: No

Pros: sporty looks, fun to drive when working properly, great on gas
Cons: cheap interior, loud EMBARASSING SOUND and poor performance as a car.
The Bottom Line: I don't recommend this car to anyone. It is unreliable and will stay in the shop.

I bought my car brand with with only 56 miles on it. From day one it was a problem. First, there is a problem with the muffler I suspect. When the car is idle, it makes a very loud noise which seems to be coming from the muffler. This was NEVER ...

I Killed My Cavalier.

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Price, Handles well, Comfortable, Dependable
Cons: Head Gasket needed to be replaced, Air Conditioning went out
The Bottom Line: I do recommend this car for people not able to spend a lot of money. The car is reliable and handles quite well. Not to mention the great gas mileage.

I bought this Cavalier Sedan with 89,000 miles on it and it made it to 145,000 before an F-350 turned left in front of me at a light. The car isn't fast, it wasn't "cool" or sporty, but it was so reliable. I had a very basic model, manual windows ...

Pros: Gas mileage, good looking, inexpensive, fun to drive, big trunk
Cons: Interior seems cheap, easily dented,
The Bottom Line: I love to drive this car. I recommend it.

I'm in college and I needed a really inexpensive reliable car so I bought a 1997 Chevy Cavalier last December. It's a white, four door sedan. I got a steal on this car because my dad is really good friends with the dealer. The car has low miles and I ...

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Reliability, gas mileage, visibility, air conditioner
Cons: Lack of rear seat room
The Bottom Line: For basic, reliable, cheap transportation... this car is perfect. Looks and rides great.

I got a used (1 owner) 97 Cavalier about a year ago now. The first year has been excellent, though now I am having a single problem with this car. The windshield wipers go to the up position when turned off, which incidentially is how I found this site, ...

Apr 27 '05

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: CD Player, transmission, steering, handling, and good to drive.
Cons: Sometimes it starts a little rough.
The Bottom Line: A very nice car it would be more of an opinion to buy.

The Cavalier is a great car for the money it runs and handles like a dream. My first thoughts on getting this car were that it might not handle well in the snow living in Maine and all but it does handle well. The other thoughts were that some of the ...

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Well worth the cost ($14K), reliable, sporty, has endured well (81K miles so far).
Cons: Running into small problems now - coolant, oil tank.
The Bottom Line: I would recommend, I've owned the vehicle a long time and have only recently begun to have some problems (small ones at that).

My 1997 Cavalier is, so far, the best vehicle I have ever owned (only the 3rd car to date). I bought it straight from the dealership, brand new and have taken pretty good care of it. Ironically, when I bought my cavalier, it was literally the last ...

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Price, transmission, reliability, efficiency, power
Cons: power, cheap interior, small interior
The Bottom Line: I would recommend this car to anyone buying a first car or parents that have children that have their own cars.

I finally got my Driver's license back in April and I needed a car. Not just any car, I needed a good car. I needed something that was cheap, reliable and efficient. I pretty much got everything I was looking for. The 1997 Cavalier LS almost fits that ...

So it's not a BMW, but . . .

by j_seay
Sep 05 '04

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: 2.2 liter engine (vroom!), very reliable, good in snow, inexpensive, fun to drive
Cons: feels cheap in some areas (trim, interior, anti-lock brakes), much road/wind noise
The Bottom Line: If you don't have a lot of money to spend, but you want something zippy, reliable and with safety features like anti-lock breaks and airbags, check out the Cavalier.

. . . it's been a reliable, trouble-free car for me. I bought a used 1997 Cavalier as my first car. It was one year old with 14,000 miles when I got it, and I've had it over six years and put close to 50,000 miles on it. During that time, it's needed ...

Wonderful Car!

Jan 18 '04

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Long engine life Runs quietly Smooth riding and driving Huge trunk Roomy interior
Cons: Not very good visibility
The Bottom Line: This car is perfect for someone who wants a simple, sturdy, nice-looking car. There's not a lot to this car, and not a lot you need to do to it.

My husband and I both have bad credit, so when we sold our 1991 Chevy Corsica (worst experience I've ever had owning a car, by the way) we immediately went looking for another used car. Eight hours and 10 dealerships later we were looking at a 1997 ...

Great car. Almost no problems

Jul 22 '03

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Price, reliability, and fair power for it's class
Cons: Hardly any
The Bottom Line: Show me a better, more reliable car for anything near this price. Then, when you fail, buy a Cavalier.

I bought my 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier LS in 1997. I paid 14,400 for it with 2 miles on the odometer. ...
