1997 Land Rover Discovery- My Willow Green Lemon on Wheels

by girlfriday1
May 28 '00 - Updated Mar 16 '01

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 2.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Cargo room, handles well in poor conditions, jumpseats, airy cabin
Cons: Unreliable, no door lock buttons, minor flaws will drive you crazy
The Bottom Line: It's a looker, but you will pay through the nose. If a safari adventure means the mean streets of the city, this model year ain't a good buy.

My Love Affair with a Stranger

I admit that I have had a fascination with Land Rover for years. It seemed any tennis or Equestrian event I watched on television, ran nifty commercials showing the underbelly of a white Range Rover being...

Keeps on Rolling - My Discovery at 240,000 miles

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Off-road ability, Strong Drivetrain, Great suspension, Visibility, Seating, Reliability (for me, anyway!)
Cons: Hard to find decent service other than dealer. Prices for repairs/parts too high.
The Bottom Line: A great vehicle for off-road adventures with decent on-road manners. Great looking vehicle, turn heads even at ten years old. Being handy with tools helps keep repair costs down.

I've been thinking about writing a review on my 1997 Discovery for some time now. These are great vehicles and if you take are of them, they will last a lifetime. I recently took my Disco back to a dealership after a "highly recommended" repair shop ...

'97 SE-7 : Greatest SUV Ever

by OriginalPlaid
Jun 13 '00

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Unstoppable on and off road, good built-in six disc cd changer, strong engine, excellent center of gravity.
Cons: Uncomfortable seats, poor gas mileage, stock tires have some noticable road noise, no cd track down button on steering wheel.

Do you notice in SUV ads, no one compares their model against the Discovery? It's because dollar for dollar no one match the outstanding value of a Land Rover Discovery.

Coming in at just under thirty thousand, I was able to pick up a two...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Off-road ability, interior space, improving quality
Cons: Truck feel, too pupose built for some, rear door hinged for RHD environments

I had the 1997 Land Rover Discovery and drove it for about 2 years. During the time I had it one question always came up: "I here they are unreliable, true?".
It is true that Land Rover built a reputation on rugged, repair anywhere,...

More and Less than Basic Transportation

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 2.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Visibility, Space, Status.
Cons: Fuel Mileage, Finish, Handling, Weight

I drove a Land Rover Discovery all spring in Colorado. A friend of mine graciously let me borrow hers while she spent the winter in Florida. I do not usually drive such fancy cars.

The Discovery is by no means basic transportation. People...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: safe, tough, flexible, stylish, comfortable
Cons: fuel gobbler, costly maintenance
The Bottom Line: A great ride if you can do lots of maintenance yourself. I'd get another!

I had my Land Rover for 3 years and really enjoyed it. - Safe: Best vantage point on the road y ...

My Dirty Little Secret

Jan 09 '01

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Great Off Road, fun to drive
Cons: gas mileage

I came dangerously close to buying a minivan. With children and a camper to pull I had definite requirements in a vehicle. The "mini sport-utes" couldn't pull enough weight to be safe tow machines and were frankly too small for a growing...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Comfort and drivability
Cons: gas consumption and low liner
The Bottom Line: I want to start collecting them, this is the first on my list!

I own a 97 Infiniti QX4, a review has already been posted on it. I also own a 97 Disco SE7. It handles road imperfection with surprising comfort and off road, well it goes without saying. Here is a true off road vehicle that can be used off road. The ...

Piece of Junk

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 1.0 Recommended: No

Pros: People think you have a nice SUV, boy are they wrong.
Cons: Terrible quality, noisy vehicle, poor customer service.
The Bottom Line: Stay away from Land Rover products.

I have a 97 Disco with 87,000 miles on it. Buying this SUV was the worst financial decision I have ever made. For the last 2 years it has been in the shop 8 times for repairs. Land Rover won't own up to anything unless you push them to. They ...

A good mucking around truck
by ejrainis
Mar 10 '07
Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: No
Pros: Strong engine and 4 wheeling capability; height of vehicle; good for a part time vehicle
Cons: Premium gas; parts fall apart too frequently; parts hard to find
I bought my 1997 Discovery in February 2007 with 99k on it for $3800 from a charity auction on Ebay. The rear view mirror has a little burn out mark on it; the rear window controls from the front seat aren't working; and the spare tire cover was broken off. Oh well. I bought the Land Rover Discovery so I could get through snow and rain when my rear wheel drive Lexus would have problems. I also got it so I could bring my bike and all the beach stuff to the beach. My wife didn't want a pickup at the house and the Discovery is perfect! It feels like a truck, I can tow stuff if I need to, and it is strong enough to cart anything inside or outside the vehicle. The Discovery's will run a good 200k miles so I could end up keeping it for another 10 years! The only problem so far is finding little parts for it.
