What better advice about the neon, than from someone who drives one?
I got the neon in christmas of 96', and let me tell you i never thought it would last. My mom was in line for a new car, so she bought me one too. I loved my nissan maxima, but...

Pros: Roomy interior, responsive steering and handling, smooth styling. Cons: Mushy suspension, factory defects galore, poor reliability and safety record The Bottom Line: The Dodge and Plymouth Neon are unsafe, unreliable, underpowered, and unimpressive automobiles that should be avoided at all costs.
A friend of mine owns a 1997 Plymouth Neon sedan and I recently had the opportunity to take it for a drive.
Inside the Neon you'll find a relatively easy to use dash, which is poorly fitted I might add. The seating position is very low and...

Pros: Good pickup, nimble handling, roomie for a compact Cons: typical for brakes to squeal and for headgasket problems at 80,000 miles The Bottom Line: If you HAVE to get a Neon look for the newer models. Hopefully, they will have ironed out some of the problems that plauged the 1997 models.
I bought my Neon Sedan new and drove it hard for 4 years putting about 84,000 miles on it.
I liked the engine pick-up and nimble handling of the car. You could really zip in and out of traffic with it in the city and on the highways.

Pros: fun to drive, comfy seats, interior laid out well
Cons: head gasket, awful weatherstripping on windows and trunk The Bottom Line: depends on car condition and owner's tolerance for little problems. Still better than a Geo :P
I bought this car as one of my "first" cars. I've had it going on 5 years and up until recently, it ...

Pros: Cute, affordable if you take care of it Cons: Dents easily, probably not that safe
I bought my Neon because I thought they were cute from the moment they came out! And it was the only car that I could afford to buy brand new - at least one that I would drive. Right after I bought the car, I was a little worried that I would have all of...

Pros: Not many, but good on gas Cons: The quality of the automobile is horrible
Well where should I begin. I have had my neon for about four years. And I have had nothing but problems from the beginning. The first problem was I had to have my engine mount replaced. Then came the wet floor, anytime it rained hard, my floor on the...

Pros: comfort & controllability Cons: value in the end
I own a 1997 Plymouth Neon and love it. I bought it brand new. I haven't had to put any major work on it yet and it has 55,000+ miles on it. When looking at new cars I had four things in mind. 1. COMFORT 2. ROOM 3. Overall Price and 4. My monthly...

Pros: Always seems to start instantly, only falls apart while driving. Cons: Failed components: EGR-valve, O2 sensors, numerous gaskets, timing belt, alternator belt, ignition switch, brakes jammed! The Bottom Line: The problems experienced on my Neon are becoming more common on other Chrysler products. Chrysler offers little or no help. Especially Paul Willison Plymouth Chrysler in Toronto Canada.
Bought brand-new in 97...after first six months dealer couldn't explain why engine light kept coming on. Found out by a private mechanic it was a leaky head gasket. Every six months after a major repair something else fails on the car. For all the ...

Pros: Safe, dependable, economical, over all great little car. Cons: Brakes are very noisy , but usually just when moisture gets in there. The Bottom Line: Most certainly will recommend this car to anyone. Safety is the key in all we do!! And from personal experience, I know this is one safe car to drive.
I bought my Neon 4 Dr Highline in 1999 when it had nearly 40,000 miles on it. On June 9, 2001, it was totaled when someone pulled out directly in front of me and my 3 children and I T-boned her in her passenger side. Both air bags blew and there were no...

Pros: Price, Decent Sized interior Cons: No Power, Very Unreliable, Engine Design is horrible The Bottom Line: Overall, the Plymouth Neon is one of the worst cars I have ever seen or driven surpassed only by the Suzuki Swift. I would defiantly STAY AWAY from this car!!!
The 1997 Plymouth Neon is by far one of the worst cars I have ever seen or driven. Luckily I don't own one, but unfortunately my girlfriend does (hers is a 1996, but nothing has changed). Before I get into the specs of the neon let me tell you a little...

Pros: looks? price, interior room Cons: reliability
I bought a plymouth Neon brand new at the end of the 97 model year. I got 2000 cash back. I thought it might be a good choice for getting a new car. All in all, it was not a bad choice...but, especially in cold areas, not the best one.

Pros: good price...looks cute Cons: very small inside...noisy...slow acceleration
I've had this car for a little over a year. Runs good and is very reliable, it's a bit noisy though. Looks cute from the outside but is very small inside (don't sit in the backseat if you have long legs) Good price for a reliable mode of transportation it's given me no problems , great for students.

Pros: safe, lots of pep, gas miser, plastic bumpers!, no major issues Cons: frame-less windows, window moldings collected water which lead to rust
Sadly I only had the car for 11 months, but I plan on getting another Neon. I had a car accident where I was hit head on at 70km/hr...estimated $8000 damage, and walked away with only a bruised arm. This car was very very safe! I never even felt the airbags deploy...I was wearing sunglasses and they didn't even move from my face. I only realized that the airbags had deployed when the car stopped and I got out basically unharmed! I've been driving a new Hyundai Accent since the accident and am missing my Neon like crazy. It had so much pep, was better on gas and a much smoother ride than the Accent. For the price, I would definitely recommend a Neon. AND yay for fully plastic bumpers...never showed a scratch! Only saw the mechanic for very minor things. Everyone I knew complimented this car for value for money. It looked really sharp...no one believed it's age.

A Decent Car

Pros: Great gas mileage, lots of room, comfortable Cons: wind noise while driving at speeds above 55 mph
The 1997 Plymouth Neon is a pretty decent car. I purchased my Neon in December 2003. I purchased this car because my husband and I decided that we needed a second car in the family to make things more convenient for us. We were only expecting to keep the car for short term and then sell it when we finally felt comfortable to purchase a brand new vehicle.
The car is a beautiful blue with the original shiny paint job and it has great gas mileage. That is a very important thing nowadays with gas prices at $2.50 a gallon.
I love my neon because even though it is a smaller car there is still tons of room for all typer of passengers. I am 6 feet and my husband is 6'4" and we fit in it just fine.
There isn't too much that I would change about the Neon. The only thing that I would change if given the chance is the wind noise that the windows make (even when closed) while driving on the highway. I would recommend this car to anyone. I think that it is a great car for first time owners and drivers.
