An American Tragedy

by
Feb 26, 2012 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 10 Recommended: No

Pros: Sporty Looks
Cons: Engine, Electrical, A/C, Performance
The Bottom Line: I would not recommend this vehicle due to it's unreliability, unpredictability and frequent, costly repairs

I recently purchased a (seemingly well taken care of) 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix SE 3.8L V6 for a pretty reasonable price of $2000 (including all additional costs).  "What a steal of deal" considering that this model was purchased by the original ... read more

Pontiac Prix isn't built to last

by
Jul 22, 2007 - Updated Jul 24, 2007 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 10 Recommended: No

Pros: sporty looking, alloy wheels, roomy interior, good acceleration
Cons: faulty wiring, intake manifold cracks in 3600 engines, constant maintenance
The Bottom Line: No. This car is not built to last even with constant upkeep. If you fix a problem, another one occurs almost immediately.

I bought my 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix SE used from a reliable source. It had a little over 100k when I bought it, but was taken care of by an older couple. I made sure to ask about the intake manifold, which cracks around 100k on most 3600 engines ... read more

Good-looking, fast car, but with a few issues

by
Mar 13, 2007 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Nice-looking, roomy, fast, safe
Cons: Maintenance, city gas mileage
The Bottom Line: I would not hesitate to recommend this car - provided you know that maintenance might be in the future. It's a nice-looking, sporty sedan.

The 1997 Grand Prix is the first year of this style GP. Itís a pretty decent overall car, with plenty of power and good looks, but mine didnít last forever. I really liked this car when I first got it. I had the GTP version, which came with a 3.8L ... read more

A poorly constructed nice car

by
Jun 19, 2005 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 30 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Performance (3.8 liter non-supercharged engine), space inside
Cons: Electrical and accessory reliability, brake rotor life, overall build quality
The Bottom Line: Possibly a good buy for the performance and space, if you budget for repairs and squeaks and rattles are ok with you.

I received this car from a family member approximately two years ago. It was in great condition and had been maintained quite well. After driving the car for two years I have to say that I enjoy the performance, am comfortable in it, but am not happy ... read more

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Fast, sporty, wider IS better
Cons: Price, gas mileage
The Bottom Line: I would recommend the 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix because it's fast, sporty, safe, and most of all FUN!

I always wanted a Grand Prix, so when the opportunity to purchase this 1997 Grand Prix GTP presented itself, I had to jump! It was a lease trade-in so the prior owners had taken really good care of it. There are so many things I love about this car. ... read more

My race car, my obsession, and my pain

by
May 2, 2002 - Updated Nov 1, 2002 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Muscle car performance, looks great, big trunk
Cons: Um... Muscle car reliability, and a thirst for premium fuel
The Bottom Line: I have to recommend the car. If you can afford it, it's just one of the most awesome cars around. But if you're looking for reliability, maybe look elsewhere.

I bought my '97 GTP in February 2000, with 64,000 miles on it. It was beautiful, black and scary fast compared to my 1989 Bonneville. I have had a lot of fun with this car. I took it to the drag strip with some friends and ran under 15 seconds at 93 ... read more

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Safety! plus style and roominess
Cons: 2 door a little awkward - go for 4
The Bottom Line: Wide track rules - this car saved my life.

I should have died the day a little old lady changed her mind about a left turn and pulled back out in front of me on highway 29 in Vallejo, CA. I was doing 65 when she clipped my rear end. I fishtailed, spun 180 degrees, and slid backwards to a stop ... read more

Great car, but...

by
Dec 24, 2001 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 30 Recommended: No

Pros: Nice looks, super handling, lots of car for the money
Cons: Many small problems and bugs during this first year of the "Widetrack" design
The Bottom Line: Pontiac Grand Prixs are awesome cars, but I'd stay clear of the 1997 models.

First off I must state that I absolutely love Pontiac Grand Prixs. I bought my first, a 93 Grand Prix SE, dirt cheap and loved that car to death. When used 1997 "Widetrack" Grand Prixs stating hitting the streets as program cars in 1998, I jumped at the ... read more

Pontiac Builds Excitement!

by
Sep 14, 2000 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Wide-Track design for safety.
Cons: Low-sitting back seats.

I purchased this car in 1997 because I was in the mood for a sporty, yet classy car. The new design on the Grand Prix is very sporty and should be in a class of its own. I bought the 4 door sedan (SE) model to add a little style to a sports car. ... read more

We walked past this car 5 times at the dealership while looking for a FORD...silly us!! Once I got inside I knew this was a car that I had to have. I have the GTP model and with 240HP it really hauls..well, you know. It's also really spacious inside and ... read more

Pros: Sex appeal
Cons: Handling in turns

I have a black 97 GP SE 3800. It came with a dealer installed sun roof and shiny metal rims. The sun roof has been great, it's from Holland called Hollandia. BUT, the combination of black color and dark interior and sun roof, really make the car hot, ... read more

Author's Product Rating: 10 Recommended: No

Pros: Nice style, nice pick up, Heads Up Display, and the Sound system
Cons: Poorly constructed, too many constant problems with the car

I really thought I was going to love this car when I first bought it. The only thing I ended up loving was the HUD. The stack of paperwork I have for this car is unbelievable. I had 3 separate water leaks, trunk, side window, and wheel well. The ... read more

I own a 1997 Grand Prix. I agree it's the best looking,3.8 powerfull, sporty, roomy, most cost effective car for the options on the market. However, Pontiac really needs to work on the reliability of the Grand Prix. I have had to replace the radio five ... read more

I bought a used '97 Grand Prix, SE, 3.8, in the spring of '99. I came away from the dealership with a sporty, yet sensible, car for a very good price! ($12,000) I am very impressed with the appearance, and mechanics of this car. It has plenty of ... read more
