1998 Grand Caravan: You Can Tell A Lot About People From the Car They Drive

by Dr_Steph Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 200
Jun 08 '01

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Double sliding doors, many safety features, AWD, comfortable ride
Cons: No automatic locking seatbelts for car seats (need locking clip), hard on your self-image
The Bottom Line: I’m reluctant to admit that this is my favorite car I’ve ever owned. What does this say about me, I wonder?

Dr_Steph’s Car Buying History

(Skip past this lengthy introduction if you just want to get to the facts – spoiled sport!)

Actually, I started my adult years on a used bicycle. I abhorred our culture’s over-dependence...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 1.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Comfortable seats, drives well, decent sound system.
Cons: Cheap transmission, generally unreliable transportation, very poor jack and tire tool.
The Bottom Line: This is a comfortable minivan that drives well. Poor reliability is the main reason to avoid this vehicle at all costs!

This is better than a "long term test". This opinion is based on my company's service fleet of Dodge Caravans. We have been using them since 1996 and I've seen around 25 to 30 of them come and go. I'm on my third one now, a 98.5 model. I have...

Pros: Roomy, comfortable, great design, appealing, suits all family members.
Cons: Some parts can be costly. Can get a speeding ticket before you know it.
The Bottom Line: I recommend it to anyone with a family It's great for frequent travelers and anyone enjoying comfort. Also great for those who work out of their vehicle.

This is an updated review: History of a Caravan I purchased a used 1998 Dodge Caravan and I am highly impressed by it. I have a child of my own, plus a nephew and 2 stepchildren that I transport regularly. The old car just ...

Van on the Run..

Jul 19 '00

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: roomy, easy to drive and controls easy to find and use
Cons: difficult to take out back seat bench

This summer I have been driving my brother's Caravan a lot back and forth to our beach rental. When you need to transport a lot of stuff in a weekend, (especially when you have two kids), you will appreciate the room that a Mini-Van has over most of the...

My Second Chrysler Mini Van - It's Still Going !!!

by sounddude
Jun 26 '04 - Updated Jul 03 '04

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Stylish, drives well, fairly comfortable, mostly reliable, spacious, good family car.
Cons: Some plastic panels, poor transmission reputation, loud, poor crash stats.
The Bottom Line: Has been a good reliable, comfortable vehicle for family and work. But some models have had history of transmission failure. Buy with extended warranty if possible. Good luck!

History I grew up during the hippy era and always wanted a Volkswagen Micro Bus. Of course, I never got one but in the late 60s and into the 70s, the full size van became the vehicle of choice for those roving rock and rollers who roamed the ...

1998 Dodge Caravan Resale Value Great if You Take Care of It

by DGodesky
Mar 18 '02 - Updated Oct 16 '09

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Significant improvement in reliability and design over 1996-1997.
Cons: Heavy rear bench seat; sound system not up to "premium" standards.
The Bottom Line: The 1998 and later Caravans are huge improvements over the 1996-1997 models; this has been a joy to own and drive.

Update - well, we sold our Caravan in June 2009 for $3,800 with 138,000 miles on it.  It never needed a single major repair, and we cared for it inside and out - this resale value seems pretty good, especially when we noticed prices down to $1,200 ...

Pros: Roomy, comfortable, reliable
Cons: Doors slide too quickly, could be better on gas
The Bottom Line: It's reliable, safe and consistent. I don't care much about the rest.

by vachipep Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000
May 10 '00 - Updated Jun 01 '00

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Roominess, engine, comfort
Cons: it's a mini-van

I am a sales representative, and until recently, my company required us to drive (company owned) white Dodge Caravan's. My first one was a '96 Caravan SE. After I put 90k miles on it, it was time for a new one. My company got a good deal on the...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Spacious, Decent Looking
Cons: Loud, Cumbersome

In one of the episodes of the Brady Bunch, Greg buys his first car which turns out to be a lemon. Dad Brady tells Greg "Caveat Emptor - Let the Buyer Beware." I've seen that episode a million times... one would think I would catch on.

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Smooth, tight ride, very affordable, stylish.
Cons: Noisy tires, rather short-lived suspension system.
The Bottom Line: Nothing else compares, Dodge is King of Minivans. Options, value, affordability make this the best minivan you can get.

This is our fourth Dodge Grand. I actually wanted a newer vehicle, but my neighbor (a used car salesman) found this low-mileage beauty for $5800. My husband and I (plus 4 kids and loads of gear) have a '91 Dodge, still running. We own a '99 Grand ...

Used Dodge Caravan

Nov 23 '07

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 1.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Lots of room for passengers and driver. Love the 2 sliding doors.
Cons: Unreliable engine performance.
The Bottom Line: Do not purchase this vehicle unless you enjoy spending money and a resale value that continues to decline quickly.

I try to always preface my vehicle reviews that this is a review of a USED vehicle. Most vehicles that I have owned have between 80,000-100,000 miles on them when I get them. This was no different. I purchased my 1998 Dodge Caravan for $3000 ...

Cons: no rear vents

Pros: Everything a family vehicle should be!
Cons: Gas mileage - but that's to be expected

I'm not a mini van person. OK...let me rephrase that, I *wasn't* a mini van person. :o) As the impending delivery of our second child approached, and our older Ford Explorer seemed to be needing more and more costly repairs, we actually considered...

Pros: SAFE, ROOMY, COMFORTABLE,AFFORDABLE, AFTER 57,000 MILES-NO SHOP VISITS!
Cons: LOW GAS MILEAGE--18MPG
The Bottom Line: HONEYMOON OVER BUT STILL IN LOVE after 57,000 miles and NO PROBLEMS and NO TIRE problems at all!(I do rotate tires every 5,000.)Gas town-19MPH trip 26.5MPH!

We had a '85 (new),a '90(used under 1 year),Caravan Grand, and we love them. Then we decided to just try a Ford Windstar for a ride, mistake. Then we bought it for the ride and quietness big mistake.
