Jeep Grand Cherokee. Maybe not GRAND, but quite good

by shurie
Jun 15 '01

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Driveability, dependable and torquey straight 6. V8 option, Overhead console.
Cons: Poor gas mileage, low resale value.
The Bottom Line: More comfortable and fun to drive than many of its competitors, it's worth a look. Falling prices, along with a surplus supply, makes them a good value.

At the end of a three-year lease, I just returned my 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. Because it is still fresh in my mind, it’s a good time to give you my reflections on the experience.

If you are purchasing a brand new Grand Cherokee, you...

I like it, but I imagine there are better

by SomeNYCGuy
Jan 03 '02

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: No

Pros: It's a Jeep. Better than a Hundai.
Cons: Doesn't seem horribly reliable.
The Bottom Line: If you can find one cheap, buy it. But one of the main reasons to buy it, is that it is an American-made 'Jeep'.

I have mixed feelings about this Jeep (1998 V8, 5.2 Liter Grand Cherokee Limited). This article is written by a Motorcycle guy, and the car is registered in my wife's name, so take that at face value.

Though I live in New York City, I wanted...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Power, ride, handling, cargo room, value for the $
Cons: Fuel economy, drivetrain noise, spare tire location

I've had a Grand ownership experience sofar with my '98 5.9 Limited (the only year they made them with that engine). Before buying it, I test drove the much more expensive Mercedes ML430 (about $50,000) and was even more convinced that the Jeep is a...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 2.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Great utility!
Cons: 4x4 ride issues, headroom

If there were ever a perfect example of a Love/Hate relationship - this vehicle is it. I've driven Grand Cherokee's for business and pleasure for over eight years now, and I'm not likely to buy or lease another one unless they make some radical changes...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: No repairs so far, runs like new, great style
Cons: No power seats, but that's fine with me

This is Chapter II of my Jeep Cherokee experience. While we have owned three Jeep Cherokee Laredo vehicles, 1988, 1991 and this 1998 model, my husband drives the 1991 model. He can write his own review if he wants to.

We purchased this...

I love my Jeep!

Dec 01 '00

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Appearance, luxury, comfort, reliability
Cons: Slightly underpowered, transmission sometimes a little noisy

I drove my 1989 Suburban for 11 years until it got wrecked. I wasn't prepared to buy another car, mentally or financially, and I assumed it would take me many weeks of kicking tires before finding another car -- smaller this time, since in another year,...

Functional Workhorse SUV

by kachline
Mar 21 '04

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Power, brakes, reliability, functionality, stereo, built like a tank
Cons: back seat space, fuel gauge, truck-like steering, power windows, road noise
The Bottom Line: A good SUV for those in their 20s, or for someone seeking a functional "get around" SUV. "Functional" is the key word to describe this SUV.

Introduction: After six years, 150,000 miles, and a recent job promotion, my wife and I recently traded her 1998 Jeep Cherokee Classic in for an '04 Volvo XC-90. There are a lot of good things to say about the Jeep. It easily carried my wife ...

Jeep is Good and Cheap

by star-child
Aug 30 '00

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Low Cost
Cons: Made Cheaply

The Jeep Cherokee base model 4 cylinder, 2WD, 2 door, standard transmission, is definitely the poor mans SUV. I really didn't want to buy a new car when I did but when my wife got pregnant I needed something a little bigger than my mini truck. ( I...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 1.0 Recommended: No

Pros: appearance, riding comfort
Cons: unreliable in winter, cheap construction, repairs on major components

I bought my Jeep Grand Cherokee because I liked the features and appearance...and price. I had bought it as a brand new left over in the summer of '98. I had narrowed my search down to the Toyota ForeRunner, Nissan Pathfinder, Ford Explorer, Ford...

Pros: roomy, dependable, good value

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a lot of vehicle for the money. I originally bought my Jeep to provide more room for my two growing boys. They are involved in several sports with an extraordinary amount of equipment to haul around. The Jeep provides me with...

Surprisingly Impressive

by TheBurro
Jan 24 '01

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Excellent 4WD capability, decent ride for a truck.
Cons: Gas mileage.
The Bottom Line: Overall, a decent SUV, great in the snow and mud. Rides better than most SUVs, but watch out for some reliability problems.

I purchased a 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee used, about a year ago. The original owner had put about 19,000 miles on it, and she was having trouble making the payments. I picked it up for $21,000, which I think is a pretty good deal, since she had paid $30,000...

Pros: its incredibly well built, drives like a dream, and has great options
Cons: sometimes the gas mileage is low

I am one of those incredibly lucky individuals who loves their car. It's sick really. I get all up in my friends faces for the teensiest things that I believe can in some way damage my beautiful car. "Did you touch my window?! Then why is there...

Pros: Durable, spacious, powerful

Cons: Ashtray poorly placed

I've owned the Jeep grand cherokee for almost two years....It's an excellent vehicle. I've always owned a cadillac, so changing to a 4 wheel drive sports utility vehicle was quite dramatic. I really do love it. It makes me feel safe on the road in all...

'98 Grand Cherokee: Best in it's class!

Nov 08 '99

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: options, performance, comfort, versatility, style
Cons: spare tire is in rear compartment (takes up space)

We purchased our 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited six months ago. My wife and I were just browsing the showroom on a whim (she was convinced that she wanted a Subaru Legacy Outback 30th Limited Edition), when the salesman mentioned a trade-in that...
