I've had worse cars

by
Feb 8, 2011 (Not Yet Rated)

Author's Product Rating: 30 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Body structure,  gets through the mud and snow, gas mileage.
Cons: Pesky wheel bearings and anything else  a General Motors alliance got its filthy mitts on.
The Bottom Line: Would recommend. Particularly if you live away from paved roads. inexpensive alternative to full SUV.  Especially if you're under 5'4"

It could have been worse. It's pretty good in the snow and mud we get up here in the hills, however the turning radius is comperable to a buick century or a full size truck.  Pretty reliable start up wise in -20F weather, but whenever you have to ... read more

Sporty and Practical

by
Apr 13, 2003 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Nice size for most driving, good gas mileage
Cons: Nothing major
The Bottom Line: This car is great for me. It's roomy without being a behemoth or a gas hog (great news as gas prices have increased). I would recommend this car.

Keep in mind that I've only had this car for about three months at this point. I'll write more after I've had it for longer. It is a used 1998 Forester which I bought in Feb 03. It had about 52k at time of purchase. Mine is a manual 5-speed. ... read more

Pros: Reliability, spaciousness, gas mileage, handling, All Wheel Drive (AWD)
Cons: auto windows needed adjusting too many times
The Bottom Line: Excellent car for families, adventurers, road-trippers, commuters, dog-lovers, etc.

In August of 1998 I was determined to buy an Explorer or Forerunner but an article in Consumer Reports on the Subaru Forester prompted me to check it out first. I never made it to the other dealers - left the lot with my new Forester and have been a VERY ... read more

Great vehicle with just a few problems

by
Feb 4, 2002 - Updated Feb 6, 2002 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Lots of cargo space for its size, powerful engine
Cons: Window frames inadequate, poor placement of some items
The Bottom Line: Best of the mini-SUVs, safest SUV on the road

I've been driving a used 1998 Subaru Forester with manual transmission for a few months now and have been extremely happy with its performance overall. Actually, I DID have a problems with the car because the dealership I bought it from put ... read more

I hate SUVs, but...

by
Nov 21, 2001 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Excellent in snow, reliable, handles like a car, decent gas mileage, decent options.
Cons: It rattles a bit, back seat is fairly snug, the dealers are lame. It's butt-ugly.
The Bottom Line: Guilt-free SUV, decent mileage, reliable, car-like ride, good options, and you can find one with a 5 speed.

I hate SUVs. They use too much gas, are often bought more as status symbols, are dangerous to other drivers, and most people who buy them have no need for all or 4-wheel drive. BUT, after moving to a remote area that gets a lot of snow, I needed to get ... read more

No decal spells problem

by
Jun 26, 2001 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 20 Recommended: No

Pros: Great in Snow
Cons: Wheel bearings and shift shake
The Bottom Line: Being one of the first in a new model line could have made this car an issue. I have to think the new ones have had the bugs taken out.(?)

I should have known this car was going to be a problem, when I went to buy it,none of the Foresters on the lot had the Forester decal on the side. In fact, they charged me for it when I took the car in for service the first time. I have owned 4 ... read more

Subaru Forester- Ok, but....

by
Feb 20, 2001 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 20 Recommended: No

Pros: Full time all-wheel drive, great for snow
Cons: drives like a truck-rides like one too
The Bottom Line: I didn't like it, maybe you will, but here's why I don't:

Shopping for a new vehicle this winter, one of my options included a 1998 Subaru Forester, which I had been told by many was an excellent value and fun to drive. The minute pulled off the lot, I felt like I was driving a low-riding pick-up. It was not ... read more

Not very pleased

by
Nov 27, 2000 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 30 Recommended: No

Pros: AWD, Safety
Cons: Service, quality, craftsmanship

I bought this vehicle because of it's safety awards and the AWD without the height of a SUV. The power is ok, good enough to merge on freeways, and it handles more like a car than a SUV. What I hate about this vehicle is the flimsyness of the materials ... read more

In August, 1997, my husband went to the Subaru dealership to look at the Legacy Station Wagon. We were looking at a family car, but weren't interested in a mini-van. We had owned a 1986 Subaru sedan and loved it so we'd though we'd look at what they ... read more

Pros: Excellent AWD system, handles like a car
Cons: Limited towing ability

Best Vehicle I've Owned

by
Apr 25, 2000 - Updated Dec 13, 2007 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Great performance, gas mileage, dependability, safety, LONGEVITY!!!
Cons: Back Seat Leg Room
The Bottom Line: I don't think you can go wrong with the Forester. It consistently is ranked at the top by Consumers Digest.

I bought the Forester because I had previously owned two other Subaru's and they both were remarkably dependable. In addition, Subaru's tend to be just a tad unique as well -- and I like to be a tad different than the normal crowd. I now have 45,000 ... read more
