Spendy but worth it...

Dec 29, 2001 - Updated Jun 16, 2003 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 30 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Safe, powerful, great looking
Cons: Expensive to buy and to fix.
The Bottom Line: Its expensive, but I never regret spending $$$ on the best. Its safety record speaks for itself. (Update): i still don't regret it, but care and feeding is expensive.

We bought our V70 new a few years back. We had just started our family and wanted a safe car (we were driving a honda civic) with 4 doors and room. We considered a Tahoe, but it was too much a 'truck' for my wife. Pros: - 2 years and ... read more

Volvo 1998 S70

Oct 22, 2001 (A Somewhat Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 10 Recommended: No

Pros: The car is comfortable to sit in.
Cons: Too many mechanical problems with no resolution from Volvo. It is a lemon.
The Bottom Line: It requests too much maintenance and Volvo does not stand behind the problems.

It is a terrible car mechanically and the Volvo company disappears and disputes the obvious problems. Volvo is a waste of time and money! The car rides rough. There are a multitude of problems that keep you going back to the dealership, including and ... read more

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Nice, comfortable, safe car. Good gas millage. Pickup is good even in non-turbo version.
Cons: Repair cost. $500+ for front brakes.
The Bottom Line: Nice, safe car that's not horribly expensive this is the car for you. Especially if you can purchase the car from a Volvo dealer certified(includes a 2 year/24,000 mile warranty)

Love the car. Handles nicely, tracks straight, very comfortable. The car has a lot of creature features, from heated seats(included in the winter package) to automatic climate control.)If you buy one from a dealer that's certified (from Volvo) be careful ... read more

Jul 27, 2001 (A Somewhat Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Convenient convertible outstanding in the main stream.
Cons: This was one of the first one so some small quirks occurred but nothing serious.
The Bottom Line: A beautiful Volvo with a safe inside

My color was the golden and I got plenty of comments how much people liked the cars styling. Nice when you drive with the top down and receive peoples positive attention. Everything worked fine for the 3000 miles I own the car. The only thin I ... read more

Understated Luxury

by jedison
Jul 20, 2001 - Updated Apr 24, 2002 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Excellent power (T5), smooth handling, doesn't attract attention
Cons: A few squeaks and rattles, a bit pricey to maintain and repair.
The Bottom Line: A stealthy luxurious ride for those who want to enjoy themselves without drawing a lot of attention.

I bought my 1998 S70 T5 new, and I've loved every mile (just passed 60,000). The acceleration never ceases to amaze me, and I get excellent gas mileage considering the size and weight of the car. I'm pretty big, and I bought the Volvo in part because ... read more

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: FAST!! FAST!!! FAST!!! Oh, also SAFE!
Cons: Pricey
The Bottom Line: This car is for the family and the sports minded alike.

We recently bought a 1998 S70 T5 used. With the impending arrival of our second child, we realized we needed to find a replacement for our 2-door sports car. We were looking for a sporty 4-door sedan, not willing to entirely succumb to the family ... read more

May 4, 2001 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Tremendous power, beautiful lines, vault like feeling of security.
Cons: Far too much torque steer, slow access to rear seats
The Bottom Line: Great car for a single person or childless couple. If you appreciate the beauty of this car and like power but are not an enthusiast, this car is for you.

In 1998 I was looking for a high-powered luxury coupe with a manual transmission and room in the back for the kids. I looked at the M3, which did not carry the same amenities as the C70 and when loaded out was pricier still, and did not have as much room ... read more

Mar 14, 2001 - Updated May 2, 2002 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Easy insurance rates, safety features, POWER, comfort
Cons: Pricey replacement parts, a little square-ish, leg room for back seat
The Bottom Line: I'm extatic with my VOLVO S-70(T-5). My next car will be a VOLVO too if I can afford it.

I bought my 1998 VOLVO S-70 (T-5) last September after returning from living overseas for several years and being spoiled. My last car there (In the UK) was a 1993 VOLVO 440 and I had LOVED almost everything about it except the fact that I couldn't ... read more

I would buy it all over again

by stown
Mar 9, 2001 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Safe, Solid, Fast, Stylish, Comfortable, Sporty
Cons: Requires Premium Fuel, Painted bumpers, the T-5 is expensive to insure.
The Bottom Line: The S70 was the best value in its class. Also, I think that it will hold resale value very well in light of the cramped backseats in Volvo's new S60.

I have had my S70 T-5 for almost three years. Because the car was based on the 850, I knew a lot of the kinks would be worked out. I loved the look of the car too. I opted to buy instead of lease, because I knew I would keep this one for a while. ... read more

Feb 21, 2001 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 10 Recommended: No

Pros: Seats, driver console
Cons: ABS brakes, electrical system, myriad other problems
The Bottom Line: Volvo has tanked over the years, and this car is the manifestation. Beyond the poor quality, the customer support is non-existent, probably because they can't keep up with consumer unhappiness.

Greetings from an ex-Volvo loyalist. Don't do it. Don't buy a Volvo. Since purchasing new our V70, we have been back to the dealer 11 times in 20k miles. Visit my website to review "Ingrid's List" for the painful details: everything from the door locks ... read more

Author's Product Rating: 30 Recommended: No

Pros: Safety, convenience features
Cons: Little annoying failures

I bought my V70 because of its easy handling, good acceleration, and the Volvo reputation for safety. In these areas, it doesn’t disappoint. The V70 is a full-size wagon with comfortable seating fore and aft and adequate cargo space. Not ... read more

Cons: T5/6 does bump the price

I've owned my 1998 S70 T5 since mid-1997 and have put 90000 miles on it, most of that at 75mph on the freeway. (Once a week I drive a 400mi round trip, almost always done in the same day...sometimes I spend more time in the car than at the ... read more

Sep 21, 2000 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Great acceleration, gives the driver peace of mind.
Cons: Still a little boxy, heavy steering wheel.

My father bought this vehicle used in 1998. It had about 8,000 miles on it. For the family, the Volvo has been very reliable. Which starts on the likes of this vehicle. The car has very strong acceleration and great braking properties. I love the ... read more

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Quiet ride, Comfortable seats, roomy in the back.
Cons: Craftmanship appears to be a little off

We just purchased a 1998 V70 about 2 weeks ago. It had 47,300 miles on it so it has about 2700 more for factory warranty and then it has an additional 2 years/24,000 beyond that. Before this we had a 1989 Volvo 740 Turbo (talk about problems!!). We have ... read more

Pros: Excellent seats, good build quality, very fast (GLT and T5), very practical, safe, outstanding dealer service
Cons: Expensive, terrible turning radius, average stereo quality, eats light bulbs, air conditioning troubles, position of the emergency flashers button

In late 1997 I was looking for a sedan for my fiance. After driving some of its competitors (MB C280, BMW 328i, Audi A4, etc.) we decided to give the Volvo a try. We liked the fact that the Volvo was roomier than the German competitors and provided a ... read more

If you are under 5'2, don't buy this car!

by JHershey
Jul 2, 2000 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: great heating, great air conditioning, great for traveling and large families
Cons: seats can be uncomfortable if you are smaller

Yeah, the title is pretty broad, but for my mother and for me a few years ago, this was totally true for this car. If you are under around 5'2 or 5'3, the front seats and the back seats, because of their form and shape, just aren't comfortable at all. ... read more
