4 New Tires, 3 Transmissions, 2 Broken Doors, & a Partridge in a Pear Tree

by prfstars Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 200
Sep 11 '03

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 2.0 Recommended: No

Pros: "Magic" third row, ample power, cupholders galore, comfortable, well designed interior (mostly)
Cons: Transmission, doors, generally not up to Honda's standard of reliability
The Bottom Line: 1999 was a bad, bad year for Odysseys.

When I bought my 1999 Honda Odyssey EX three years ago, it was a year old, and had about 12,000 miles on the odometer. I'd been looking for a new Odyssey, but the demand was high and dealers were asking $3000 over MSRP. When the slightly-use ...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Stylish, roomy, seats convert in middle row, great storage
Cons: Troublesome auto sliding doors, Dangerous (in our opinion) sliding doors, expensive to operate, rough ride

We were just about to sign the papers for a Toyota Sienna last year when we saw the ad for the new 1999 redesigned Honda Odyssey. We ran out to the Honda dealer and saw the only one they had...already sold so we couldn't take a test drive.
We went...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Honda functionality, excellent safety ratings, handles like a car.
Cons: Automatic doors could be a problem, no leather option this year... starting to have a few reliability problems?

*NOTE! This is one of several cars that I get monthly updates on! Be sure to check this review out if you want the low-down on how it's like to live with the Odyssey.

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Spacious, comfortable, versatile, reliable
Cons: Busy ride, sliding door problems, thirsty in city driving
The Bottom Line: This is a reliable and a versatile vehicle, an excellent cruising machine with good fuel economy on long trips.

1999 was the first model year for this big van and Honda did it right the first time. Our Odyssey did not need any repairs at all in 4 years and 50,000 miles.

Comfort and safety:
+Four comfortable captain seats with good height,...

Love hate Relationship

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 2.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Good handling. Items on dash well-placed. dumb place for 6 CD changer
Cons: Problematic A/C. Door Latches replaced often.
The Bottom Line: Don't buy. This van spends way too much time at the dealer. So much time that we opted to buy the Extended Warranty at 30K as a cost-saving measure.

After researching mini-vans we bought a brand new 1999 Odyssey in December 1998. Since then, I have begun a love hate relationship with it. Okay, why love?
First off, the ride was the smoothest out of any mini-van we tried. The Toyota Sienna was...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Space, highway handling, visibility
Cons: recalls, brakes, roof rack, stereo

Our Odyssey is now 16 months and 20,000 old, and still going strong. I do have a few comments that I didn't read anywhere else here, though. Many other opinions are written during the Honeymoon phase. We are well beyond that. Don't get me...

Pros: size, handling, seating, gadgets, power doors
Cons: waiting, tape player

I wanted a station wagon to haul my equipment, but they don't make them like they used to. Most wagons are hatch backs with puny cargo areas. I looked at a few mini vans and found they didn't carry much either and had uncomfortable seating and lousy...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Great ride
Cons: Fuel gauge, Recliner switch

We were looking for a second vehicle to use for family hauling. Long trips were not so comfy in our SAAB 900 and it only had four seats. With baby number two on the way we thought it was time to add to our fleet.

I read tons of online reviews...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Fantastic Engine, Very Roomy , Great Brakes
Cons: Power Door Problems, Tailgate and Door Squeaks, Cheap Stereo, No All Wheel Drive

My wife and I needed room for our growing family. We wanted a minivan and Chrysler was our first choice, but the quality concerns made us procrastinate on making a decision until the 99 Odyssey came out. We really wanted All-Wheel Drive, but Honda's...

pretty good but not perfect

Dec 04 '99

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: great engine, quiet, good ride, love the power doors
Cons: seat comfort only fair, poor front legroom, terrible sound system

Best thing about this van is the engine and ride - powerful engine, quiet,
good handling - I can forget I'm in a big van and not a sporty sedan.
Next best thing is the power doors. I've heard horror stories about them, but mine have been...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: quality, space efficiency, clever design
Cons: feels sparse, dealers charging $$$

Synopsis:

I can’t think of a better minivan. It is as smooth and comfortable as any Honda. Perfect for a family or anyone who needs the space. After a few years of the original ill-designed Odyssey, Honda really hit it out of the ball...

Best of the Best

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Honda is well known for their longevity, low maintenance, and high resale values.
Cons: Just a bit on the Pricey side.

My family was looking for a Mini-Van that would stand out from all the rest, something out of the ordinary, and we found it with the Odyssey. While the Chrysler Town and Country was a strong contender, Honda's reputation for quality put it over the top....

Pros: Remote sliding doors, fold down back seat, removable middle seats
Cons: Very expensive

I waited for three years to buy a minivan because I believed that Honda could do better than the original Honda minivan. We read the review about the new 1999 Honda Odyssey by Consumer Reports (sorry this was not available) and put in an order for the...

Our '99 Odyssey LX

Jan 15 '02 - Updated Apr 19 '03

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Overall, excellent van!
Cons: Mostly minor complaints.
The Bottom Line: Overall, great minivan. There's a reason why so many folks want these - worth it! The positives [especially the ride, handling, & convenience] are way above the competition.

Well, have had this creature for about 8 months now. And, it is by far the best van could have hoped for. After test driving others, along with having driven my folk's Dodge Grand Caravan on occasion, settled on this used version.

Found it...
