Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Zippy. Compact. Good gas mileage. Fun
Cons: Spare tire adds length to car.
The Bottom Line:

I liked it better than the bigger versions they started making in 2004. This is an SUV lite.

I had a love affair with this car. I had seen and was intrigued by this car that a co-worker had purchased earlier new. It's like an SUV lite. You definitely sit high above the road like a king or queen but you don't feel like you're in a monster truck ... read more

The Bottom Line: DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME, MONEY, OR SANITY! AVOID IT LIKE THE PLAGUE!

Where do I start...let's just say I would have actual nightmares of the thought of having to drive this thing out in the snow. I've had numerous occasions where I've gotten in near accidents when it snowed because the 4wd never engaged. I actually did a ... read more

Author's Product Rating: 20 Recommended: No

Pros: Cute, rides good, easy to handle.
Cons: Costly upkeep to keep sensors good, top is hard to get off and on correctly
The Bottom Line: If you dont mind the hassles with the sensors and not being 100% ready to roll all the time then its a good buy. I wouldnt recommend it.

I finally bought something in my life that had no ones name on it but MINE-- 199 Kia Sportage 4X4. Well, what I didnt realize was that it was going to cost me more than anything in my life had thus far. I bought it used and got taken to the cleaners ... read more

Author's Product Rating: 30 Recommended: No

Pros: Price
Cons: Not a well built car
The Bottom Line: I don't recommend it for your primary car, but if you need a cheap back up car and don't mind a medioker car, then this might work

I bought our Sportage in Jan. 2000, very slightly used with 5K mile from the chevy/kia dealer in Johnson City Tn.. Its an EX 5-speed 2wd.. It was traded in for a 4wd Tracker.. We primary use this at our Second Home for our spare car, so it has only 30K ... read more

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Affordable Fun Turning radius Theft protection Acceleration
Cons: Wind noise with convertible top Difficulty getting out of back seat Access to rear compartment
The Bottom Line: If it was stolen or totaled I would be looking to buy another one.

This two-door convertible has been a pleasant surprise. I kept thinking something is bound to go wrong because this used vehicle cost about half as much as the same year Wrangler or Rav4. But, it has been dependable, seems built to last, and I always ... read more

I love my Sportage (if it would only be more reliable!)

by
Jan 23, 2003 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 30 Recommended: No

Pros: Size, Features, Price
Cons: Reliability of options
The Bottom Line: I like the options, feel, size and affordability of my Sportage. I only wish Kia had invested a little more in parts/quality of options (a/c, 4WD).

When we bought our Sportage we had just come out of bankruptcy (from a failed business) the year before so what we could qualify for finance-wise was limited. Living in Maine we wanted a vehicle with 4WD & an automatic. We had never thought we would ... read more

Pros: Price/Warranty
Cons: Mileage, trade in value, Catalytic converter, Brakes, Back door, Battery, pwr mirrors.
The Bottom Line: Buy the Rio if you plan to keep it forever, and run the wheels off, i mean for $850 a yr one cannot go wrong, otherwise STAY AWAY!!!!

We purchased a KIA Sportage in 99 because the dealer talked us into it instead of a Toyota Rav 4, bad mistake, he pushed the 5 yr warranty, which i liked now i know why it's a 10 yr!! Never believe that commercial on the comparison of Toyota vs KIA. I ... read more

Aug 19, 2002 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 20 Recommended: No

Pros: Good price for its type, good driving and decent towing ability
Cons: Cramped, not reliable; many things wrong in a short time; greatly loses value
The Bottom Line: This car is affordable and effective, but the repair bill and loss in value outweigh the economy of it.

I originally took over lease payments on my red 1999 Kia Sportage convertible from my brother, who got it new from a reputable local dealer. He had the starter replaced on it once, but had no other problems, so I gave it a go, as I was quite in need of ... read more

I own a 1999 Kia Sportage 4x4. I bought my Sportage in September 1999 because of the excellent rebates being run at the time. When I bought my Sportage it was $7000 less than a comparably equipped CRV or RAV-4. I have had my ... read more
