Not beautiful enough to justify all of the $$$ in repairs/maintenance

by efraelich82
Nov 17, 2009 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 20 Recommended: No

Pros: Fit and finish, quality of materials, headlights, Audio system, controls and convenience features.
Cons: Reliability, reliability, reliability.
The Bottom Line:

Bottom line is that this is a beautiful vehicle with many well thought out amenities however overall, it's reliability is terrible. These cars can quickly become a money pit.

I owned this car for 5 years and over that time, averaged about $1000 in repairs every 6 months. I bought it with 72,000 miles from a very reputable Audi dealer who had maintenance records going back to day one of it's life. It had been maintained ... read more

2000 A4 2.8 Great while under warranty, but not for the long haul

by mightynic
Nov 7, 2005 (A Somewhat Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 20 Recommended: No

Pros: Great styling, sporty, solid, great Bose stereo
Cons: No extended powertrain warranty, unreliable, small back seat
The Bottom Line: Cute and sporty, but don't expect this car to last forever. Lease it until the warranty expires, then give it back!

When I purchased this car back in April 2000, it was an expensive gift to myself. I had wanted an A4 ever since they came out in '96. Overall, I have been very pleased with my purchase...until two weeks ago. Having paid off this car over a year ago, ... read more

Author's Product Rating: 30 Recommended: No

Pros: Fun, sporty, practical for the outdoors enthusiast
Cons: headlights repeatedly burn out, constant little problems, terrible service, poor windsheild wipers
The Bottom Line: Mixed - As much as I enjoy driving it, I've had a lot of problems.

This car was exactly what I wanted - practical for those sports outings, decent mileage, and fun to drive. The performance is great and it feels like a quality vehicle. The handling is top-notch and the quattro had gotten me out of more than one jam (as ... read more

Pros: Great interior, sporty exterior, 4 wheel drive quattro, bose radio, trunk space, SERVICE AND WARRANTY!
Cons: cup holders, space CD's and misc. items
The Bottom Line: Buy it! It looks great inside and out, performs well, and has a warranty that can't be beat!

This car is great! It is so fun to drive and my radio is fantastic (I am in sales, and count on a great radio for a pick-me-up). That upgrade was very worth it! The interior is great, and I love the red dash! The turning ratio is great, and I find I am ... read more

Sexy car, average performance.

Feb 18, 2002 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Great style and quality for very reasonable price.
Cons: Performance doesn't live up to its look.
The Bottom Line: I would recommend this car based on style and overall quality. The performance could be improved though. I would opt for the sports package and the bigger engine.

Let me first start out by saying that I have a 2000 Audi A4 sedan 1.8t with basically no options. I know these review categories don't distinguish between different models of the same car, so it's important we're on the same wavelength here. ... read more

Pros: Wonderful agile car with a solid ride.
Cons: Horrible Service from Audi. Problems with the standard stereo
The Bottom Line: I didnt buy this car for luxury, I bought it for performance -- which it delivers!

I bought my A4 in May of 2000 and have enjoyed every one of the 25k miles I have put on it so far. The Ugly -- This fast and nimble sedan suffers from two problems. One....I always want to drive above the speed limit in this car. It will take me to 70 ... read more

Aug 8, 2001 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Handling, flat torque curve, safety, styling, comfort, fit & finish, 4yr warranty, free maint.
Cons: Turbo lag at low gears, tight rear room, expensive, 1.8T lacks power seats & leather
The Bottom Line: Highly recommended if luxury brand, safety, looks and handling outweight price for which you can get bigger Maxima or Passat with V6.

Ultimate gadget! Upon delivery it took salesperson at least 30 min to show all the features and still few weeks later I'm fishing out new things out of humongous User's Manual. My favorites are self dimming side and rear mirrors, works like ... read more

We've been very pleased with our A4

by maxintosh
Jul 25, 2001 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Great looks, awesome interior, performance, brakes, safety, handling, comfort, Quattro
Cons: A small car in the truest sense, lousy cup holders, sensitive motion detectors
The Bottom Line: It's a playful, glued-to-the-road, drive-me-I'm-German sporty car with excellent craftsmanship and safety features. A best buy for the money.

The A4 has treated us very well, proving to be a safe, well-handling, reliable car. A few months after we bought the car, one of family members hit a tree quite hard in it late at night. The front of the car crumpled up and absorbed the ... read more

May 30, 2001 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Carved from a single piece of metal.
Cons: Too "small" & "weak" for average Joe sixpack American's prejudices.
The Bottom Line: An excellent implementation of the sporty compact European sedan.

The A4 was on my short list of recommendations to my wife last year when she went about replacing her ten year old 1990 Audi 80. After two test drives, she chose the A4 1.8T/quattro with automatic. That was a year ago. Today, both of us still like the ... read more

Do the pros outweigh the cons?

by erinjade
May 27, 2001 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 30 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Modern, "techy" interior, not too common on the road, AMAZING warranty
Cons: Electronics problems, hard-to-get parts, long waiting periods
The Bottom Line: Good- Head-turning car. Bad- you spend half of your time in the shop getting it fixed! Good- all of it is covered by the warranty. Bad- Electronics problems too common.

This was the first new car I had ever owned. Prior to the Audi A4, I had a 1994 Toyota Camry, 4 cylinder. Needless to say, I was not accustomed to major horsepower and I wasn't really looking for major horses under the hood. Thank god I didn't ... read more

Pros: Lots of features. Smooth ride. Decent performance.
Cons: Fault relay in first month, wind noise
The Bottom Line: Great car, need to worry about minor maintenance problems though.

I've had this car for about a year now and I think it's great. The ride is very smooth on the freeway up to about 85 mph. The performance is quite good, although it by no means compares to any of the real sports cars. I like it that Audi ... read more

The A4 gets an A overall

by AlpineSki
Feb 19, 2001 - Updated Feb 20, 2001 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Conservative, yet appealing looks, very smooth ride, great traction, nice 5spd manual tranny, comfortable seats
Cons: Interior a little claustrophobic, could use more power, could use a better automatic transmission
The Bottom Line: This would be a 5-star car if only the engine had more power. Beyond that, this is a well-priced, well-built, practical, comfortable wanna-be sports car.

The Audi A4 is not the most impressive car to look at, and it generally does a great job of blending in with traffic, and ususally doesn't attract attention to itself, that's somewhat unfortunate considering the fact that this is a well-priced automobile ... read more
