by
Jul 7, 2010 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Performance, prestige, interior layout, aggressive stance, heritage, build quality, helpful forums and just love BMWs.
Cons: Possible high maintenance cost, eats tires, dealerships unwilling with any free helpful advice.
The Bottom Line: Excellent car and with right preventive maintenance schedule is pretty much trouble free. But a high performance car like this is a tad more expensive to own.

Thanks for taking time to read my review. As a BMW owner/restorer and a DIY guy, I have some wonderful tips on making owning this automobile a positive and less costly experience. We'll start with my baby(had her only three weeks, still grinning), a 2000 ... read more

Mar 5, 2004 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Good power, acceleration, quality interior, ride, stability assist, low wind noise, power tilt/telescope wheel
Cons: Stereo, engine/tire noise, squeaks, repairs, brake pad wear, brake dust, cup holders, interior space, CD?,
The Bottom Line: Great looking interior and exterior. Great if you are not looking for tons of room or Lexus reliability and isolation. Expensive to repair and very complex.

As a BMW owner for the past 15 years, I feel that I am somewhat of an expert on the marque. My parent's owned a dealership for many years and I have had the pleasure of driving virtually all of their products over the years. I have owned several 3 ... read more

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Power, transmission, comfort, handling, excitment
Cons: oil consumption and possible technical problems. The heavy cost of maintenance.
The Bottom Line: If you love performance cars and are put off by the comfort and practicality buy an M5.

In purchasing an M5 I had read many reviews and being a cynical ex-race driver from the uk, believed only that by driving one day in and day out would the real truth come out. And the truth is this is one of the most astounding sport sedans ever ... read more

A truly great car, but...

by
Sep 8, 2003 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Quick and Comfortable
Cons: NO SPARE TIRE, uses oil, interior trim peels/flakes, spendy maintenance
The Bottom Line: The pro's outweigh the con's, but do yourself a favor and get a spare tire. Of course then you'll have no trunk space.

Having driven this car for over three years, I must say it is my favorite car of all time (I also have/had a Viper and Acura NSX). The car is quick and comfortable on long trips. I think others have covered to positives of the car so here are the negative ... read more

Pros: The perfect solution for a middle-aged boy racer.
Cons: Constantly looking for cops in the rear view mirror.
The Bottom Line: The BMW E39 540i 6-speed is the poor man's version of the E39 M5 and the perfect stealth vehicle for the man who is having a mid-life crisis.

Author's Product Rating: 20 Recommended: No

Pros: Great driving experience. Nothing like it.
Cons: Shameful quality of electronic equipment
The Bottom Line: If you can afford the repairs, this is a great car.

I wanted to give a used car perspective on this model. I purchased it in April of 2002 with about 35k on the car. BMW performed their usual inspection and repairs on the car. I was presented with a car that looked so new it was unbelieveable. ... read more

The Perfect BMW Compromise

by
Mar 27, 2003 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Excellent handling, responsiveness, comfortable seats, sharp design
Cons: Of course the cup holders, but no car is perfect
The Bottom Line: Buy a used one, about 3 years old,low miles, you save money and have a dream car.

I have high-end Japanese cars, 2 Saabs (900 and 9000), and the 3-series. The 3-series was fun and sporty, but lacked space. The 528 provides more room than the 3-series, more class, a single person can grow into it as a family car and there is plenty of ... read more
