loved, but lost

by
Aug 22, 2008 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Structurally sound, inexpensive to maintain and fun to drive.
Cons: poor gas mileage, got around 19 miles to the gallon on average.
The Bottom Line: Buying it for weekend getaways and mountain play, great for those. Otherwise, stick with something more fuel efficient for everyday.

Structurally very sound.. Writing this based on that I owned the 2000 Xterra for 8 years until my son totaled it, trying to miss a coyote on a blind curve. Took this SUV back into the mountains, many a dirt road, cliff side and body held up through all ... read more

2000 Xterra V6 SE, solid and reliable car

by
Dec 12, 2007 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: reliable, solid, well-made, cheap parts, and roomy.
Cons: Poor factory tires, not so great gas milage.
The Bottom Line: This is a great mid-size SUV for the price.

Bought this car brand new in 2000. So far we have put 110K on the car. The car has never let us down, it starts up every time no matter how cold it is outside. After 110k, the car is running so well as if I just drove off the dealer's lot. Have not ... read more

My test drive

by
Feb 9, 2004 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 30 Recommended: No

Pros: It looks cool. Very agile for a larger sub-SUV.
Cons: Underpowered. Bad MPG. Annoying design to rear seat fold-down and moonroof.
The Bottom Line: Yeah, it looks really cool, but there are better values in the sub-SUV class.

I think a lot of people buy these because they look cool. I will be picking up something from the small-SUV class shortly, but I've decided it won't be this. Initially, I was also very attracted by its bold, aggressive styling. Now, if only it could ... read more

Poky and sleek (but the paint is already falling apart).

Author's Product Rating: 30 Recommended: No

Pros: Looks good. Truck mentality.
Cons: Comfort, no power, bad paint.
The Bottom Line: Try a later model. This one still had it's bugs.

My wife and I purchased this fine vehicle within the first few weeks of it's initial release. We liked the look, she needed a new vehicle and we both agreed that, given our outdoor lifestyle that a 4x4 was in order. We enjoyed the vehicle and still do ... read more

Pros: BEST SUV EVER! Sharp looking, Fun to Drive, Stadium Seating in back.

My 2000 Xterra is the beautiful bright red with the black nose cover accessory, very sharp! Extremely sleek looking. Side steps makes it easy for kids and adults alike to "jump" into this fun, practical, economical (compared to other suvs in its class!) ... read more

Looks great - but it'll cost you

by
Feb 12, 2003 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 10 Recommended: No

Pros: Nice looking - very rugged and outdoors-y.
Cons: everything else
The Bottom Line: Only for people who care about the look, and nothing else.

I was one of the very first people to buy this car, in November of 1999. My experience with this car (having just traded it this week) ranks LAST in my automotive experiences (and I've owned about 20 cars in my 47 years). This was the first ... read more

Pros: Trusted and reliable auto company, great features, cool looking.
Cons: none.
The Bottom Line: Its a great looking and very reliable Suv.

The 2002 Nissan Xterra is an exelent suv. It caught my attention with its different but cool exterior design features such as the standard roof basket and side moldings. The Xterra is made by Nissan, a very trusted name, I have owned nissans in the ... read more

Oct 9, 2002 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 30 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Stylish, ample passenger room
Cons: Small storage, not convenient for family travel
The Bottom Line: Above average SUV in it's class but an average passenger vehicle.

The 2000 Nissan XTERRA is a wonderful choice for the lower end SUV. This SUV provides enough room for 4 comfortable but is not very convenient for family travel. The storage containers are small and the cup holders and inconveniently places. There is, ... read more

Soccer Mom says...about the Xterra

by
May 9, 2002 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 30 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Great handling, roomy storage space, comfortable seats and a sporty package
Cons: Not recommended for a growing family. Can't open sun-roof when utility basket is attached
The Bottom Line: While not plush, the Xterra offers a comfortable and sporty vehicle for the mother on the go with plenty of storage space. Too small for over 4 people.

Maybe I shouldn't be in this department, the world of automobiles and the people who really know the ins and outs of them. I consider my opinion, from my perspective as a Soccer-Mom-On-The-Go, a valuable one. I speak from experience, not expertise and ... read more

Buy one....if you truly want a sport UTILITY vehicle.

by
Jan 23, 2002 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Utility, cost-effective, well-built.
Cons: cramped engine compartment, 4 wheel shift jabs leg.
The Bottom Line: If you want a capable, no-nonsense SUV buy it. If you want a tall station wagon dont buy it.

The Nissan XTerra is a wonderful, well-priced vehicle. It handles well on and off road and can perform almost anything you choose to throw at it. The 4X4 model performs exceptionally well off road and numerous after market options are available for ... read more

Cons: Unresponsive Noisy Engine, High Fuel Consumption
The Bottom Line: Great Value, Fun to Drive, Very comfortable for up to 5 adults, Not so great on gas

Sep 21, 2001 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Looks awesome, feels great. I can't find the underpowered engine and quirks that others describe
Cons: Mileage maybe? I can't really complain... it's an SUV for crying out loud!
The Bottom Line: I would, without hesitation, recommend this vehicle to anyone who is looking at purchasing a mid-sized SUV. It's fun to drive, and definitely great to look at.

The first time I saw an ad on television for the 2000 Xterra, I thought to myself, "Wow... you gotta love that truck..." That television ad got me so hyped I could literally feel myself blasting through the forest, streaking down ... read more

I Love my XTerra!

by
Sep 8, 2001 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Beautiful interior and exterior styling!
Cons: Could have a few more options/luxuries! Not great on corners - truck frame.
The Bottom Line: I am INCREDIBLY happy with my Xterra! It's definitely a Gen-X mobile!

I traded in my Jeep Wrangler last year for a brand new silver Xterra - and, let me tell you, it was the BEST trade I've EVER done! I absolutely LOVE my Xterra! The back seat has "stadium seating" - makes it SO comfortable for the passengers! Mine has ... read more

After 1 Year, Would I Buy it Again???

by
Aug 24, 2001 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Good Looks, Drives Well, Nice "stadium" seating in rear, good mileage (for a truck)
Cons: A little short on power & creature comforts
The Bottom Line: Good SUV - Good Mileage for a Truck - A little low on H.P. - If you need to haul 5+ folks for any distance, look for something else...

Probably not. I have had my Xterra for a little over year - mostly driving around a mid-west town of about 100,000 (ie, not too much traffic). I have had it off-road only a few times. Does well off-road - a little short of clearance compared to my ... read more

Nice SUV, wait a few model years

by
Jul 17, 2001 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 30 Recommended: No

Pros: Sexy exterior, reasonable size
Cons: first model year, some control issues
The Bottom Line: It's pretty, just a bit high maintenance. Wait a few years for them to fix some of the minor flaws.

I have to admit right away that I bought the XTerra entirely for its looks and my ego. It's a really cool looking truck. I wish I had waited for a few reasons. The biggest was the price. I got destroyed by the dealer because he knew I wanted ... read more

Jul 6, 2001 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 30 Recommended: No

Pros: Excellent BFGoodrich tires, Clear gauge cluster, stadium seating in back
Cons: Lazy V6, lots of body roll
The Bottom Line: Not a bad SUV, but it has a lot of room for improvement. Luckily it looks cool.

ENGINE This V6 engine is the same one they put in the Frontier. It is very lazy when accelerating from highway speeds. However it will tow 5000 lbs. in 4WD. 4X4 I'm going to try to make this sound as good as ... read more

Author's Product Rating: 20 Recommended: No

Pros: rugged, solid, will get you through winter easily, not too expensive
Cons: zero power, loud, too tall,
The Bottom Line: There are better, safer alternatives.

This was my first SUV, and not my last(I traded this in for a Pathfinder). It was a decent enough introduction into the SUV class. It was fairly cheap, it's drivetrain has been battle tested for years, it's solid and looks really nice. The interior ... read more

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Well made versatile
