Looks funny, drives worse (or why not to buy an Echo)

by mkaresh mkaresh is a Lead on Epinions in Cars & Motorsports, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 10
Nov 10 '99 - Updated Oct 14 '05

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 1.0 Recommended: No

Pros: lots o' room in a wee tall box
Cons: goofy styling, ridiculous misleading ads
The Bottom Line: I said it wouldn't fly, and it didn't.

Back when the media were still calling the Echo a fine piece of machinery, I wrote this review telling it like it was. This made many people unhappy. I suspect this review has received more NRs than all of my others put together. Still, I love a good ...

Love my Echo!

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Comfortable, nice colour, small but roomy
Cons: No intermittant windshield wiper speed.

I'm a Canadian woman who has been living in Europe for the past three years with my Dutch husband. In June, I came back to Canada to set up house in preparation for my husband joining me in July.

I rented a car at the airport...a 2000 Toyoto...

THE TOYOTA ECHO: Even All-Stars Have Bad Games...

by vara, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 200
May 02 '00 - Updated May 13 '00

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 2.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Toyota quality, lively performance, ample headroom, impressive stereo.
Cons: Nasty looks, sloppy handling, ill-placed gauges, not best value.

Fellow Epinioneers (and non-Epinioneers), do you have a favorite professional athlete? Someone who you know has a good feel for the sport, and will never let you down? Well, in the car-world of sports, Toyota is truly an All-Star player. However,...

I really like my new little car.

by emannella
Apr 10 '01 - Updated Jun 04 '05

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Front and side visibility, roominess, peppy engine, fuel economy
Cons: Manual outside mirrors, rear visibility, no intermittent wipers
The Bottom Line: This is a great little, economical car that is fun to drive.

After having driven a Dodge Onion uhh Caravan for 11 years (paint peels like an onion), it's nice to drive a small car again. I am not the typical youthful driver (almost 45), but I like the lines of the ECHO -- it's different and I like different. ...

Toyota Echo: It's Got That ;OH-What-A-Box-On-Wheels-Feeling (2001 Update)

by kellydeal
Nov 03 '00 - Updated Jun 08 '01

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 2.0 Recommended: No

Pros: 41 MPG -Take That OPEC
Cons: You'll need the extra cash to save up for the options
The Bottom Line: Great gas milage but boxy style makes it good for long commutes

I commend Toyota bringing the public a very fuel efficient econo-car. I really do. With the OPEC Hokey Pokey that's been going on as of late, Toyota execs were probable under the delusions Americans would ditch their gas-guzzling SUV's in favor of 41 MPG...

Why I didn't buy a Toyota ECHO

by astrid
May 12 '00

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 2.0 Recommended: No

Pros: high seats--good view of the road, tons of storage, comfortable seats, interesting shape
Cons: what the car does once you turn it on

I like the ECHO on paper. I like the image Toyota is trying to establish for the ECHO. I like how roomy the interior is. I like the little storage spaces everywhere. I think it's a really cute little car . . . in a bulldog-cute sort of way.

Toyota completely blew it on this one

by MattCA
May 11 '00 - Updated Jun 24 '00

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 2.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Big trunk, lots of room for fast-food wrappers to collect, great stereo
Cons: Ugliest thing on the road, handles like a "Radio Flyer" wagon, and who put the speedo all the way over there?!?

Yep, Toyota must have signed off it's R&D work to Hyundai on this joke of a car. I have driven worse cars, but not many (and I've driven a lot of cars). This will be one of my more brief opinions, as there is simply not enough to like about...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Fuel efficient, comfortable seats, roomy interior, low price, high ride
Cons: Cheap plastic trim, useful options extra
The Bottom Line: Looks different, but it has all the features you need for inexpensive and comfortable driving.

If your priorities in buying a car are fuel economy, price, reliability and comfort, then you will find my review useful. I will not tell you whether the car is attractive or not because I think that is your decision to make. Also, I leave it to you to...

AMAZING gas mileage!

by fogarty
Jun 23 '00

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: gas mileage, cute styling, lots of storage, great price
Cons: things are just out of reach, not a whole lot of power

40.5 miles per gallon! But it seems to be made for people with very long arms.

All my "car buff" friends said the manufacturers lie when they give the estimated miles per gallon, but I was thrilled when I filled up and found that I...

So Ugly It's Cute!

by desyner
Nov 04 '00

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Low cost, good fuel economy, Toyota reliability
Cons: Cheap materials, average fit & finish, so-so handling

I'm a bit of a weird guy. I have a soft spot for cars
that other people call ugly. Then again, I'm pug-ugly
myself, so my oddball tastes should come as no surprise.

The Toyota Echo is one of those cars others call 'ugly'.

ECHO: Great for what it is

by cokicat
Jun 14 '00

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: zippy, economical, good price, low-maintenance
Cons: blah interior

Well, for starters, we own the car. I figure our experience with the car should count toward something. And, well, with the fact that we don't get personally attached (read, "love connection") to our cars, we can tell you what we think straight...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Round wheels and 4 matching tires
Cons: You have to pay for it

Whew Momma...this is one ugly car. At first look it reminded me of a rear-ended Planter's peanut. No... Come to think of it, it looks like a bloated Morris Minor. Whatever. The R & D team at Toyota is still laughing because Marketing never got the...

Toyota ECHO: close, but no sale

by cathyb53 Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000
May 09 '01

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Roomy interior, zippy-feeling little thing, high drivers' seat, easy in & out, great mileage
Cons: bumpy ride, nervous-making handling
The Bottom Line: Not for super-tall people, but seems like a zippy and fuel-thrifty little car for the rest of us. I'd buy it in a heartbeat if it was just me!

Crisis! Shock and Disbelief! Our 1988 Toyota Camry has bit the cosmic dust. Shuffled off its mortal coil. Gone to the Great Beyond. Slipped the Surly Bonds of Earth.

In other words, our battered but trusty (or so we thought) "good" car...

A wonder of an experience

by LKnomad
Feb 04 '00

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: large inside, great economy, fun to drive
Cons: Have to deal with Toyota dealerships, no ABS in california

I have just finished my second tank of gas on this car and I have had some great driving experiences and fun times behind the wheel of my new ECHO. I spent a great deal of time (as I was stuck at home with chicken pox) on the internet reading about all...
