My 2000 Beetle only has 40K miles on it and its gone crazy on me. I parked the car and upon exit the alarm when off. I had to restart the car put it in reverse back up and pull back in the parking space, turn it off again and get out again to make the ... read more

Pros: It's cute. It has heated seats. Its easy to park.
Cons: MUST READ REVIEW! HORRIBLE REOCCURRING ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS. POOR VW SERVICE AT DEALERS.

Sep 7, 2006 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 20 Recommended: No

Pros: Cute styling. German character. Fun to drive.
Cons: Reliability problems. Poor interior workmanship. Cheap interior materials. A little under powered.
The Bottom Line: If I had to do it again, I wouldn't buy another Beetle. Too many problems.

We purchased this car used in 2004 with 34K miles on it. We have now owned the car for a little over 2 years which gives me more than ample time to form opinions on it. My wife has always wanted a bug and when she drove it, I knew we were buying it no ... read more

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Great style and personality, peppy and fuel efficient. Makes a statement wherever you go!
Cons: Many problems in the first 5 years, expensive without extended warranty.
The Bottom Line: Unparalleled style and craftsmanship in a legendary car. Great performance in a small package, and good value in its class. Protect yourself with an extended warranty.

I have always loved The Beetle. My plan was to own a restored classic '73 Super Beetle, but when VW announced that they would actually produce the New Beetle concept, I was hooked. I bought my 2000 Cyber Green GLS in 2003, off a lease return from a ... read more

Cons: Engine, cooling system windows you name it
The Bottom Line: Stay very far away! Don't waste your time and money

I bought my car brand new in 2003. Within the first couple of months my temp gauge kept saying my car was overheating. Every time I would take it in the shop and they would tell me they couldn't duplicate my problem in order to fix it. So I take my ... read more

Apr 23, 2005 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 30 Recommended: No

Pros: Styling, acceleration, handling
Cons: Lot's of small problems that get expensive over time.
The Bottom Line: Try a new Beetle, used ones still have bugs.

So my history is that I had a '73 Super Beetle and I had to get the new one. I heard problems existed with the sunroof, so I insisted that the car I purchased had no sun roof. Cosmetically the car is great - a New Beetle is something that can be seen ... read more

Hello, my name is Roxann and I purchased a 2000 Beetle 2 years ago. I took really good care of my car just as I have with all of my vehicles before. Then one day my car wouldn't start the so I had to get it towed and repaired which was a major repair, so ... read more

A surprisingly good driving experience, but beware of electrical issues

by
Aug 16, 2004 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Superb interior design, surprising handling, manual transmission, excellent seats, good radio, fun quotient
Cons: Electrical problems, cargo space, novelty is not what it used to be
The Bottom Line: Surprisingly fun driving experience, quality design and construction. Possibility of electrical problems. Buy one if you love the look, but consider the Golf as well.

I just returned my bug just short of a 3-year lease. I think there have been a few misconceptions about this car - the biggest is that while it looks like a cute (feminine?) car from the outside, the wide platform, stiff suspension, and large tires make ... read more

Watch out in the fourth year of VW New Beetle TDI

by
Apr 8, 2004 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 20 Recommended: No

Pros: Great fuel economy.
Cons: Not the long term car I had hoped it would be.
The Bottom Line: Purchase a used VW TDI with caution. Fuel economy will be fantastic. Performance is good around town, marginal on highway. Fragile body parts. Some parts are too expensive.

I owned a 2000 New Beetle from, well, new. The ownership maintenance issues for the first 3.5 years were typical VW owner experiences. I had to have the check engine light reset 4 times. The air bag light came on. Again, a simple reset, but an ... read more

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: cute and fun to drive
Cons: horrible upholstery!
The Bottom Line: It's a great car (mechanically) but the worst upholstery I have EVER encountered!

I love my beetle but I am absolutely FRUSTRATED over the lousy upholstery. It stains so easily! I bought my car at the end of the season (because my previous car was stolen and I needed a car FAST....) I drink a lot of water in the car while driving, ... read more

2000 Turbo Beetle

by
Jan 18, 2003 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Fast & fun! Love my red beetle!
Cons: Small back seat! Gas mileage not that great for small car.
The Bottom Line: If you loved a bug years ago, you'll find the New Beetle a great "upgrade!"

I used to own a 1974 Super Beetle. When I heard they were reintroducing the bug with an engine in the front, I was wary. However, I bought a used 2000 turbo beetle a few months back. Local owner with only 35,000 miles. Got a great price and it was a ... read more

by
Dec 7, 2002 (A Very Helpful review)

Pros: Car looks great, operates reliably. Very average acceleration.
Cons: Lots of Nagging stuff for people who are visually sensitive. Look at Detailed remarks.
The Bottom Line: Nice design but with cheap plastic parts on the interior that wear out in 3 years!! I give this car a yes only if you own it 3 years.

OK, I'm an architect, and I appreciate nice design and that is why I bought my Beetle. I have 109,000 miles on it. I love the car, but get ready for nagging VISUAL and functional problems if you own the car more than 5 years! Volkswagen needs to design ... read more

Author's Product Rating: 30 Recommended: No

Pros: Same platform as a Jetta
Cons: Back seats - no headroom, interior/exterior look
The Bottom Line: Good for easy-going nostalgics... They thought it was a two-seater, then decided to add a rear seat..

This car is owned by my mother-in-law, and I still laugh when I see it coming through the town, some kind of silver-gray ball of steel and polymers... It does look futuristic, yet retro... But hell ! I hope the future reserves us something better ... read more

Pros: Cute, Fun,good steering.
Cons: Repairs.. Repairs... REPAIRS..!!! Sun visors too small, cheesy seat recline dial.
The Bottom Line: Either have a Dealer VW mechanic in your family, purchase the most extensive extra warranty. My Ford exploder didnt give me this much trouble. We are looking for NEW car.!!

The first few days the car was great fuel mileage was 60(+-). It is a Red GLS TDI Diesel with a sun roof, We purchased it with 8 miles on it. The diesel engine had a nice feel, like the older ones. We live in the desert southwest. We ... read more

Author's Product Rating: 30 Recommended: No

Pros: Different styling, turbocharged engine, equipment, it's german!
Cons: Different styling, expensive, stiff ride, questionable reliability
The Bottom Line: A competent little commute car, but not without reliablity issues that keeps me from recommending it.

Let us start by saying that this car is certainly not the beetle that many of the older generation have gotten to know and hate. My dad, who once lived in a small town in the Sierras, has told me many a tale about the times he was stuck behind a ... read more

Pros: Its good looks go a long way. Great city car.
Cons: Lots of little things have gone wrong. Poor service from local dealers.
The Bottom Line: If you want cute, go Beetle. If you want no hassles, go elsewhere.
