Black Beauty Rides Again? I Don't Think So.

by bustawindow
Jun 20, 2007 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 10 Recommended: No

Pros: cool dashboard, good gas mileage, supposedly won't rust
Cons: seats uncomfortable, requires much repair, boring to drive, you can't even replace a headlight easily
The Bottom Line: I would personally avoid this car and would not recommend it to anybody. What was Volkswagen thinking with this new generation of cars?

I purchased this vehicle new in August 1999. I had this idea that buying a car brand new, as long as one paid cash for it, was a good idea. Now I'm not so sure. I had more problems with that car in the short time I owned it than I would like to admit. ... read more

I love this car.

Mar 31, 2007 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Fuel economy, surprisingly good performance, comfort, style, sound system
Cons: VW dealers are mostly crooks, electrically glitchy
The Bottom Line: Cars are personal. For me, this is the perfect balance of affordability, fun, economy, and reliability.

I purchased my 2000 Jetta TDI used from an individual seller in October 2001. It had 46,000 miles on it already. It is now 2007, the car has 165,000 miles, and I am still in love with it. The good stuff first: It feels to me like a sports car. Now, ... read more

Money Pit with great gas mileage

by denutter
Nov 1, 2006 - Updated Jul 1, 2008 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 20 Recommended: No

Pros: 45 - 50 mpg, comfortable interior that wears well,
Cons: poorly built, where is the German engineering?
The Bottom Line: This is a good vehicle for people with long commutes because of the MPG. Other than that, I would not recommend this.

On my way home from the dealership, I called the sales person and told him about the rattles inside the car. He advised me to bring it in for service. I also noticed that there was a vin number written in purple marker on the side of the headrest. It ... read more

VR6 - as good as it gets

by jettavroom6
Oct 15, 2005 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: VR6 performance, handling, braking, interior quality, feature content on the GLX
Cons: Crappy oil changes, low ride height (cracked oil pans)
The Bottom Line: Go drive one! If it's for you, you'll know with one twist of the key.

As the owner of a 2000 VR6 GLX (purchased used, with 30K on the clock), I've gotta say this is the best vehicle I've ever owned! If you haven't driven one, you owe yourself the pleasure of taking one around the block. Even after driving an MK5, the ... read more

Fun, but beware

Aug 21, 2005 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 30 Recommended: No

Pros: A whole lot of fun. Feels like it cost more than it did.
Cons: You get what you pay for.
The Bottom Line: Probably will not buy another VW.

Why I bought my 1999.5 Jetta, which now has 92000 miles on it: --it had standard features that other cars in its class did not (ALS brakes, side air bags, tilt/telescopic steering, alarm system). Its sticker price was therefore deceptive, as the base ... read more

Jul 25, 2005 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Sporty, fun, safe, great sound system, lots of other things
Cons: cloth seats, everyone has one, some reliabilty or annoying sound problems.
The Bottom Line: This is a great car, period.

I purchased my Jetta a 1.8T in February 2003 Certified Pre-owned at a dealership in central New Hampshire. I have now had the car for a year and a half. All of my experiences with this car, and my dealership, have been positive. I don't need to tell ... read more

Mar 31, 2005 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 30 Recommended: No

Pros: Great durable finish. Big trunk. Built like a tank. Cruises at 100 mph.
Cons: Upkeep very expensive, about 2k-5k per year.
The Bottom Line: I honestly don't know. Great advantages, balanced by great problems.

I bought my Jetta TDI new in 2000 for a remarkably low price (about $17k if I remember rightly). As of now (March 2005) it has about 65,000 miles on it. I love this car. It's cool-looking, it's a hot & lively performer for a family sedan, and it ... read more

Fun to Drive, Not to Fix

by gbodge
Jan 11, 2005 (A Somewhat Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 30 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Good looks, good mileage, fun
Cons: Workmanship and interior material quality
The Bottom Line: Look for something else before settling on the Jetta.

I purchased my 2000 Jetta GLS new at the end of the model year. What sold me was the apparent attention to detail, such as the skid plate in against the car's trunk to keep bulky items from damaging the car, the ride, and the low price. After a few ... read more

Oct 27, 2004 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 30 Recommended: No

Pros: Top speed, handling, style, extra features.
Cons: Price, parts, quality, absolutely poor warranty.
The Bottom Line: Good, solid performing car, fine details kill the big picture.

The Jetta is fun to look at. Not too agressive, but not too geriatric at the same time. Not a speedster's flame thrower, but not a car 80 years olds drive either. It's got enough features from both stereotypes though to create a happy medium for those ... read more

Addicted to diesel, fun car to drive

by knitsnbytes
Jun 26, 2004 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Mileage like you wouldn't believe, comfy and peppy. Fun car.
Cons: Needs proper maintenance, glow plugs and windows have known problems. Get a warranty.
The Bottom Line: Would buy it again in a heartbeat. I love this car.

This is a fun car to drive--the poor-man's BMW. The Jetta is peppy, even for a diesel (gotta love that turbo!) and it gets a whoppin' 52 mpg in my hands on total highway trips. About 48 in the city, which ain't shabby neither. I got it before the prices ... read more

May 18, 2004 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Price, features, ride quality
Cons: Some small fit and finish issues with the interior.
The Bottom Line: If you like it, buy it!

Let me start by saying I really like VW cars. I have owned 5 at the time of this writing. I wrote at least one other epinion about a VW car, namely a Corrado. Well I still own the corrado, and it's still great! But I'm here to talk about the Jetta, ... read more

Yep, Lemon Car for Sure

by michlee
Feb 26, 2004 (A Somewhat Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 10 Recommended: No

Pros: This auto looks good and handles well. Roomy trunk and solid doors and body.
Cons: Poor reliability, poor warranty compared to other autos in this class. Repair costs exceedingly high.
The Bottom Line: I would not buy any VW manufactured in Mexico. The mechanical quality and reliability of these autos is quite poor.

I purchased my 2000 Jetta GL brand new in, well, 2000 and immediately had problems. The car would not hold oil; the engine just burned it up. My oil light came on about two weeks after owning the car and I subsequently had to add oil every time I filled ... read more

Dec 22, 2003 (A Somewhat Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 20 Recommended: No

Pros: Sporty, great MPG.
Cons: Too many problems, not worth the time and money.
The Bottom Line: Do not buy. Too many costly problems and poor customer service from VW.

Bought a Jetta TDI w/5k miles on it. Loved the sporty look, fast, great mileage...etc. About one year later, and up until today, we've had nothing but problems every few thousand miles and the car has 36k miles on it (Dec. 03) Dealing with VW customer ... read more

Author's Product Rating: 30 Recommended: No

Pros: Speedy, roomie, cute
Cons: unreliable with expensive and easily broken parts
The Bottom Line: If you know a lot about cars and can fix them or keep them in good condition naturally, then get one- they're a dream to drive.

Don't get me wrong, my Jetta's a dream to drive. But I've owned her for a little over a year and kno ... read more

Jun 3, 2003 (A Somewhat Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 10 Recommended: No

Pros: Nice Car
Cons: Terrible record for repairs
The Bottom Line: VW and the dealers were not prepared for a popular vehicle and it shows in the product and the service.

Bought our VW new in 2000 (GLS - VR6). We got rid of it last week, finally... Problems: 3 engines (VR6) - yes 3, the first at 12000 miles 2 transmissions Front Axle Problem (ended up being a transmission later) Fuel System ... read more

buy a 5-spd!

by blshoes
May 23, 2003 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: tight, handling, comfort, wagon versatility
Cons: Automatic Transmission
The Bottom Line: My one recommendation is to get the 5-spd. After having the AT for 16 months, I found a buyer and I am getting a new 5-spd.

I purchased my TDI Jetta Wagon in Oct 2001 and patiently waited four months for its delivery. I got the GLS with leather and Auto transmission. The car is rock solid, handles great and has had only two small issues in 18,000 of driving: 1. The lens of ... read more

Jetta provides exceptional driving experience, albeit with significant compromises

by colbywankenobi
Mar 28, 2003 - Updated Apr 30, 2003 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 10 Recommended: No

Pros: Excellent design, powerful engine, plenty of amenities, chicks dig it
Cons: Lives up to reputation of poor reliability, suspect structural integrity (body creaks and groans)
The Bottom Line: A nice-driving car that is suitable only for those who can afford to maintain and repair it, so why not buy a BMW or Benz instead?

Upon the advice of an Epinions advisor, I am posting this revised review of the 2000 Volkswagen Jetta GLS VR6 Sedan. Overview and Purchase Experience I purchased my 2000 VW Jetta GLS VR6 on February 25, 2003 from ... read more

The King of Oil Consumption

by sabre01
Jan 4, 2003 (A Somewhat Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 10 Recommended: No

Pros: Easy to drive, great on gas, handles like a German car.
Cons: 2.0L oil consumption problem, noisy, not a quiet ride.
The Bottom Line: Stay away from the four cylinder (2.0L). Oil consumption problem and noisy ride.

Bought the car in 2000. Had tire problems. Dealer arranged replacement of all four tires-free of charge. Great! Until the oil consumption problem occurred. We only had about 22K on the car (we kept the miles down because we wanted to keep it for a ... read more

I bought this car in 2000 when it was hot off the block. soon later the car fell a apart. the cup holders broke! the arm rest bit the dust. it was just crazy. then the warranty was Bumper to bumper for 2 years or 60,000miles. which my warranty was up and ... read more

Great engineering; for reliability, look elsewhere

by gamine
Nov 14, 2002 (A Somewhat Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Great V6, seats, & interior materials; fun to drive
Cons: Too many trips to the dealer
The Bottom Line: Stylish ride, but you never know what's going to go wrong next

I really can't believe the Jetta has received an average of 4 stars for reliability from Epinions readers. Even the Consumer Reports mag I looked at yesterday doesn't recommend the car anymore; in numerous reviews of VW models, they noted that ... read more
