Pros: Three rows of seats, cargo space, versatility, lots of stuff for the price Cons: Fake wood everywhere, performance and luxury though OK are less than promised
The Bottom Line: With three rows of seats, the MDX offers a lot of vehicle for the price. Just don't expect it to match the Lexus in luxury or the BMW in performance.
You might be forgiven for not knowing what the MDX is, since MDX isn't a very descriptive name. It seems MDX is Acura-speak for SUV. Specifically, an SUV that can take you wherever you want to go (if the ads and brochure imagery are to be believed)yet ...

Terrific surround sound Monsoon stereo with 6-disk CD player.
The Acura MDX is a top notch SUV. The ride is tremendous and provides a lot of luxury that is right up their with the Lincoln, Mercedes and Lexus SUV's.

Pros: Interior design, power, very intuitive nav Cons: wind noise, gas mileage, expensive/ugly accessories The Bottom Line: I highly recommend the MDX for families that mainly need to carry people and occasionally drive in bad weather.
My family bought the MDX with Navi and Touring packages in the April of 2000. It was intended for long road trips, carrying up to 7 people and luggage, and occasionally venturing out to Tahoe for some fun in the snow. So far, it has done so in typical ...

Pros: Lots of space, power, utility, and comfort Cons: no history, below-average braking, cabin noise The Bottom Line: A great all-around SUV for people who have young families or who otherwise need to haul lots of stuff. Top-rated by Car and Driver and Motor Trend magazines.
We originally put down a deposit on the MDX, but later switched to the BMW X5. There's much to recommend the MDX, and we continue to believe that it will be an ideal SUV for many people.

Pros: Handled awful driving conditions with power, confidence and safety; a joy to drive Cons: Quirky CD player eats discs, mirrors whistle The Bottom Line: Handles the worst roads with comfort, safety and confidence. Best sound system going, just don't feed it thick CDs. No problems after a solid year of driving; it's all good!
I had a Mazda Tribute and was very happy with it; great price, superb handling, thrilling power/weight ratio, even at highway speeds still lots of acceleration tucked away ready for passing.

Pros: Good power and handling, lots of room, above average quality control. Cons: uneven interior appointments, some ergonomics, determining corners of vehicle when parking, waiting for delivery The Bottom Line: A fine vehicle when a nice luxury sedan is not quite enough to fit all the things you need to load in for a family, or a long trip.
I have reviewed this vehicle because I have been shopping for an SUV. I was hesitant to write anything, until I noticed at least half the reviewers do not even own this vehicle!

2. Navigation system is quite useful.

Pros: Great in mountains and snow at 6,000-8,000 feet. Cons: Fan control is on flat panel screen The Bottom Line: Best midsize SUV currently available. Spacious, but doesn't drive or park big like larger SUVs. Great in snowy mountains or in the city.
This review is not intended to read like an article in Automobile or Car and Driver. We subscribe to both of those magazines, which rated the MDX very highly as did Motor Trend, who gave it the top rating for SUV's last year. Instead, my intention is...

Pros: Big Luxury handling SEATS 7 ride Consumer Reports #1 rated Cons: Likes gas, a tad under powered, lacks sport option
My wife and I love this truck, at first I wasnt sold, I thought it was a bit on the boring side. I wanted the Benz or the Bimmer. But my wife pointed out how much bigger the truck was. Plus Acura is making solid products these days. After a year of owning this truck, I find myself looking at other SUV's so differently. It rides nice handles beautifully and over all is very easy to own. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a just above average luxury SUV thats easy to own. The rear seat recline, and the AC and heat are powerful. Heated seats are perfect on cold days. I do wish it was a bit more powerful though, its not slow, but 25-25 extra HP would be perfect.

MDX--After 61k miles--Acura can do better

Author's Product Rating:

Pros: 3rd row seat stowage, looks sharp, wonderful in snow & ice Cons: Very little torque, transmission problems, shifting all the time, squeaks and rattles galore, noise, ride.
Consumer Reports (NOT!) still says the '01 MDX has never had a recall. Mine has for the transmission. And then I have had another tranny related problem. I don't tow with this but once tried to pull two 4 wheelers on flat land a couple of years ago at 70 MPH and it strained its guts out. Why can't this vehicle produce enough torque or transmission programming to find a gear? Even by itself it searches constantly and will downshift twice up a small hill on an interstate where the land is flat and hauling 1 person! What is with the road noise? What is with the harsh ride? I never realized what a sled I had until I got out of my Lincoln Aviator (with 63k miles)and drove this thing. The fuel mileage isn't any better either! The wife now wants something else. I know the car mags love it but if you are thinking of one of these you owe it to yourself to go drive a Lincoln Aviator.
