Pros: both well built, car-like SUVs Cons: X5: not as much utility; MDX: not as safe The Bottom Line: If you want a great all-around SUV, get the MDX. If you want the ultimate all-road driving machine, go with the X5.
We're currently vacillating between an Acura MDX and a BMW X5 3.0i as our next vehicle, and for us it's been a tough choice. We highly value safety, utility and versatility, and each model has much to offer in these categories. Although we've plunked...

[See Update At Bottom]
I am not a truck person, by any stretch of the imagination. I prefer smaller cars (I have a 2000 Z3 and a 2001 330i) and always found trucks/SUVs too bulk and unresponsive to even consider going in that direction....

The price? Well, base MSRP (which is what it’ll cost you for the foreseeable future) is $49,907 with the $570 destination charge included. This is WITHOUT options. However, the Sports Package would add $2470. Suffice it to say the X5 has a VERY long list...

On the worse side, this car has a lot of electrical problems, I mean one day its the parking lights, other day its the signal lights and so on. Not to mention to get any small thing repaired its over 400 dollars. Another thing is dont ever spend time on cleaning the wheels, it has a problem with the brake dust covering your wheel and it will always look black. Pros: gas mileage, classy exterior and interior design, extremely reliable and prestigious car brand name Cons: nothing we can think of!
My husband and I drove our newly bought used 2001 BMW 4.4 L X5!For the first day of our road trip we experienced such a rainy , wet and very slippery road conditions! The second day the road condition was dry and normal... for each day we drove the X5 for 10 straight hours! And guess what? Our newly bought used BMW 2001 X5 performed beyond our wildest expectations:
a) fuel mileage...our driving speed was at 120 km/hour on the highway, the v8 engine consumed an average of 9.7 liters/100(about 29.1 miles per gallon), truly very economical and outstanding for an SUV!
b) the sound system was excellent, the power seats extremely comfortable, and the interior and exterior design of the SAV exudes the ULTIMATE in luxury and class!
c) The driving experience was extremely relaxing, hassle-free, high-tech(thanks to the car's excellent built-in computer and sensors), and very smooth!!!!
Our rating for the 2001 BMW X5---A+...indeed the BMW X5 is not only the best.... but the ULTIMATE driving machine!

X5 Dream Car Needs Dream Wallet to Maintain

Pros: Beautiful, luxurious, I'm forever spoiled Cons: Not worth the high price tag for multiple repairs
What a treat to buy my dream car, a brand new 2001 X5. It lives up beautifully to all the hype-the luxury, the prestige, the tight, responsive drive. The car's been in the shop numerous times for repairs: the door handle paint flakes off (same with the replacement handles), the outside mirror doesn't tilt down in reverse (fixed twice), the water pump went out last year (car died on the freeway), and the deal-breaker: last week something exploded in the cooling system, causing a big hole for the coolant to leak out. Since BMW opted to not install a coolant level gauge in the 3.0, I didn't know my engine was frying until the damage was done and the car died while driving on the freeway (again) with two young children in 94 degree weather. The mechanic said I'm his fifth X5 engine replacement and it'll cost me $10,000 to $12,000 (expired warranty, of course). I have--PAY ATTENTION FOLKS--63,000 miles on the car. Will the dealership help? Do pigs fly? It's just a baby and has had all its regularly scheduled maintenance. I'm crying all the way to the Toyota dealership.

Pros: BMW ride and handling, Best-looking, safest SUV, period. Cons: BMW price. Many little glitches, thankfully taken care of under warranty. Mostly electrical.
The best car I've owned yet. 3.0 engine is excellent, and it is still quicker than most SUVs (and many cars actually), with less gas-mileage and sticker penalty than the V8 model. Handling is a dream, outperforming most CARS and through corners. With safety rating "the best NHTSA has EVER tested", this German Art on Wheels is one incredible vehicle. Only thing that betters this car is the new, restyled 2004 X5.

If your planning on buying the BMW X5 plan to upgrade to the 4.0 engine instead of the standard 3.0. However this ride provides luxurious features such as futuristic consules and bottuns for your every possible need.
