Pros: Nimble city car, good mileage Cons: Underpowered highway car The Bottom Line: A lousy highway car but acceptable for jaunting about town running errands. Workmanship is acceptable, as is most of the design. If you can, though, get a manual transmission.
(Author's note -- this is not a review of the ZX2, it's a review of the 4-door SE, for which there is no category even though there are 2 categories for the ZX2. Be forewarned.)
There's not a single thing wrong with driving a small car -- in...

Pros: Peppy, fuel efficient engine; surprising interior size and comfort; nice handling. Cons: Automatic transaxle downshifts a lot on hills; stiff suspension can give a rough ride. The Bottom Line: Great little car for singles, couples, and small families!
Last weekend, we finally did it. For the first time in ten years, we bought a new car...
The time was right for us. Financially, we could afford it; our ancient and venerable 1991 Honda Accord LX, with nearly 118,000 miles on it, seemed to...

Pros: Great for in-town commuting, impressing teen-aged daughter with an itch to start driving Cons: road noise, limited rearward visibility The Bottom Line: A good value for the things I need from my car - decent mileage, decent room, responsive driving.
Remember Chris Farley's inspirational speaker character, the guy with the big glasses who said he was "living in a van, down by the river?" For a long time, I feared that might be me. I've driven a Plymouth Grand Voyager to work and back every ...

Pros: Fun and sporty. Economical (28-33 mpg) and roomy for a small car. Cons: The CD changer is in the most ridiculous location you can imagine. The Bottom Line: It's still an Escort, but a lot more fun. Looking for a Lexus? Spend more. Looking for a dependable car that won't cost you a lot? You found it.
Update November, 2006 Well, the Z finally got traded in. After driving it for six years, 150,000 miles, I decided it was time for it to go to a nice college student who wouldn’t take long road trips. My review still stands…heck, the car never needed ...

Pros: excellent gas mileage, low maintenance, adequate power, fun to drive Cons: small, some road noise, downshifts a lot on hills The Bottom Line: affordable economy car for singles and small families
My 1999 Ford Escort ZX2 was a hand me down from my older brother three years ago. Unbelievably, he was very good to it even though he was 16 when he got it. It came standard with an AM/FM radio and cassette which he promptly switched out for a CD ...

Pros: Styling, performance, value, comfort--almost everything! Cons: Limited space, trunk-mounted cd changer, engine a tiny bit noisy
I bought my ZX2 almost 3 weeks ago. My '88 Volkswagon Golf GL decided to sulk and hit me with a potential $1,100 repair bill. I had already sunk over $2,000 in repairs on it in the two years I have owned it and I was always worried about something...

Pros: Great deal, nice styling, great power for class, lots of extras Cons: Very noisy, no overdrive, resale value, weak alternator The Bottom Line: If you get this car cheap give it some serious thought. Otherwise spend a little more for a Civic or a little less for an Accent.
I just graduated from college, moved to a new city, and needed a car. I didn't want very much: just a cheap car with good gas mileage. I was willing to sacrifice looks, endure insults from friends, even deal with some visits to the shop...in short I...

Pros: Cheap and economical. Very good power level. Cons: Manual transmission could be designed better. Rear drum brakes. A bit noisy at freeway speeds. The Bottom Line: This car offers a great price/performance ratio, is solidly built, and will not disappoint the sport compact car buyer.
In 1998, I came off my lease of a 1995 Taurus GL 3.8. I was looking for a car with much more get up and go, plus I wanted to go back to driving a car with a manual transmission. I was considering a used Taurus SHO but the insurance would have been...

Pros: sporty, economical Cons: doesn't hold it's value
What a sporty little car! It looks cool and drives great. This little baby caught my eye as soon as it came off Ford's assembly line 3 years ago. Sporty, yet economical, it's a great budget buy for a young person. The body styling is aggressive and...

Pros: handling, price, comfort, gas milage, pep, styling Cons: road noise, tire size The Bottom Line: For the price range of under $11,000, this is easily your best bet. It easily outperforms even more expensive Mirage, Neon and Sentra. It's a can't miss.
Built on a Mazda Protoge platform, this is easily the best handling and most fun to drive compact car ever built by Ford. As someone who's owned several small cars in the last 5 years, this car is by far the best value on the market. To be sure, it's not...

Pros: gas mileage, maneuverability, safety. Cons: windshield wipers replaced frequently The Bottom Line: Wonderful choice if you have one small child or less or do a lot of out of state travel.
My first car was a 1989 Ford Escort that had been given to me by my sister which was given to her by her first boyfriend, who had purchased to car brand new. He managed to purchase to car for 500 dollars. I had the car for only a short time, six ...

Pros: Cute, sporty, sexy profile, peppy response time, great handling, and a roomy, comfortable interior. Cons: If you like to slam the gas, count on lots of tire rotations and replacements. The Bottom Line: This car isn't nearly as agressive as it looks, but it's beauty is definately more than skin deep. Everyone can enjoy driving this car, but not everyone should buy one.
About 6 months ago, I purchased a brand new 2001 ZX2 right off the lot, and since then I've learned a whole lot about cars, including one thing: This car tricked me into buying it.
It has a sleek, sexy exterior, as well as a playfully...

Pros: Gas mileage, space, looks, dependability, price. Cons: Radio controls, no power windows, cup holders, no CD player, no RPM display. The Bottom Line: If you're looking for a newer car for a good price, then go with the Escort. It's rough to come by a 2001 and still pay less than six grand.
I'll admit that this vehicle is only four years old, but I've yet to have any problems with it. I get excellent gas mileage, plenty of room for friends and family, and a decent-looking car to boot. In today's day and age, I think gas mileage is most ...

Pros: Cheap, nice 5 speed, easy to maintain Cons: Noisy on the highway, average gas mileage, no driver's armrest The Bottom Line: Being better than average and with massive rebates you cannot really go wrong.
After an unfortunate incident that lead to the demise of my previous car, I needed a cheap, economical car for my 80 mile commute. I found what I was looking for on the Ford dealer's lot -- amazing since it was a vehicle loaded with all the options...

Pros: peppy, nice styling, great for shorter people Cons: need a rope to get out of the back seat, stock tires no good The Bottom Line: Not a racy sports car, but a great way to get from place to place in style. I love the thing!
So it was time for me to get a new car. I would take ANYTHING to replace the wagon I was driving. You know, the hand me down from your parents that's about 10 years old? Yeah...that's what I got to drive.
Anyways...my parents and I went down to...
