In 2005 I took over payments for a 2001 Kia Sportage and I have to say it may have been one of the biggest mistakes ever. At the time I had a little bitty Nissan 240SX which I really like, but I have two small children and small children and small cars ... read more

Pros: Small, at least it doesn't break down, not many pros Cons: Gas mileage extremely poor, rough idle, rag top sounds like its raining, belts whistle The Bottom Line: I would not recommend this vehicle as it is not as economical as they say.
We bought this car from my grandpa who had all of the current maintenance records from the Kia dealer so we put aside our thoughts that Kia's didn't have the greatest reputation yet because they have barely started out, but now I am starting to regret ... read more

Pros: It looks good when it's running. Cons: There are so many cons that I can't pinpoint them all. The Bottom Line: I don't recommend it at all. It's constantly breaking down--extremely unreliable--a financial burden.
I bought my Kia Sportage brand new in 2000. (It's a 2001). I had to have the whole 4-wheel drive assembly replaced at 7,000 miles. That was just the beginning. I have since had to have it fixed again at my cost. Last year the fan motor burned up and ... read more

Pros: Great vehicle for the price Cons: In some cases, you get what you paid for The Bottom Line: Go for it... if you test drive it and it will suit your needs. Don't get it if you want a luxury vehicle.
I bought my 2001 Kia used just over a year ago. 1. Within the first month the cup holder bottom piece broke (the attachment that holds cylindrical containers up). So, it still works for your run-of-the-mill drink cups but not 16oz. cans or 20oz. ... read more

Pros: Stylish, fun, handles all right. Cons: Cupholder blocks clock and climate controls, rear hatch needs handle or remote release. The Bottom Line: Great for a low cost used car. Adequate for our current needs. Fun to drive.
I've looked at several reviews of the 2001 Kia Sportage, and I find opinions of it all over the place. I think it depends on what you're looking for. My wife and I have ended up with four cars and no car payments. Her parents gave us two. I've got a ... read more

Pros: Good on gas for a SUV,probably affordable for what it is. Cons: Poor cornering, cup holders are in the wrong place, have to slam the door shut. The Bottom Line: It reminded me of the Suzuki Samauri of the late 80's.It's basicly the same just newer looking. If you want a cheap SUV this might me a good buy.
I went to the Budget rental company to rent a Ford Ranger because it was $19.99 a day, they did'nt have any in stock so they gave me a Kia Sportage.I was saying to myself "Why Red?!" but i really could'nt complain cause i needed wheel's at the time. I ... read more

Pros: Compared with similar SUV's, the price, warranty and 5 year service can't be beat. Cons: None The Bottom Line: Compared to similar SUV's the Kia can't be beat for price, warranty, 5 years free road service and reliability. The 4x4 handles well in snow. Plus, it's fun to drive!
Attractive, compact, nice lines, lights are a good (large) size. In particular, the blinker lights are a good size (on other SUV's they were barely noticable). It is easy to get in and out of, not too high off the ground (even for elderly persons). The ... read more

Pros: Sportage Limited has Cruise, CD Player, nice, smooth highway ride..and power switch for needed boost. Cons: Fastest wiper speed not real fast. Back door swings up quick. Watch out. The Bottom Line: Fun, practical, economical, relatively safe. Seems like a good deal...just need to drive mine for a while longer to really tell. Been real nice so far.
I've had this vehicle for almost a week. It's fun to drive.
Figured since this was a major purchase, might as well get some extra perks.

Pros: Inexpensive, comfortable, large cargo space, great warranty, great on gas, good sound system Cons: cheap, poorly placed cup holders, problems with power windows, difficulty braking, miss the v6 power The Bottom Line: The truck has been really reliable. I had a few quams with the truck but nothing engine related so you can't beat the price and warranty.
The truck is great for me and has been really reliable. I'm not easy on it either, I've only had it a year and it has over 30,000 miles on it! The things I miss the most about a larger SUV are the power and more secure feeling of a larger vehicle. The ... read more

I've read a lot of reviews on this vehicle from people expecting features of SUVs that are much bigger and twice as much money. This is not a sports car and its not a mini van. It is a small 4WD vehicle.

Pros: Least expensive vehicle with manufacturer's blessing for light towing! Cons: Limited use of 4WD in reverse, can lead to expensive 4WD Drive front axle repairs. The Bottom Line: Great Head room (even for a six footer) front and rear
Towing capability - light, but it is permitted!

Updated 21 March 2003 with maintenance. In December 2000 we were looking for a replacement vehicle, new or used. The used did not seem so cheap, so we looked at the new line-up. Web searching lead me to sorrow as none of the cars that we could ... read more

Pros: Attractively priced. Impressive warranty. Sporty styling. True 4x4. Fun to drive. Easy parking. Good mileage. Cons: Could use more power. Rear liftgate takes getting used to.
OEM tires questionable. The Bottom Line: Basically a small truck with true offroad ability. Easy on gas, easy to park, and easy on the eyes.
Great value for little dollars.
I leased my 2001 Sportage EX as a replacement for a 1995 Dodge Dakota. We have 2 vehicles, and I drive mine 50km per day from a rural area into the city and back. Snow is a big factor here in Canada, and gas prices in the Atlantic region are outrageous! ... read more

A couple of weeks ago, we had to rent a car. The guy at Dollar Rent-A-Car told me to look outside and pick which one I wanted in a certain row. Well, there was the Kia Sportage. It was a unanimous decision (myself, my 12 year old son, and my fiancee). ... read more

Pros: Cost, reliability, reasonable craftsmanship Cons: Slower than walking. Seems like a TYCO RC racer. The Bottom Line: If you're a young family who needs an SUV, this car may be an option. I'd suggest buying a mid-size sedan. The Kia is not a good SUV.
The Kia Sportage is an SUV without hope. Small, powerless, whiney, and cheap, the Sportage reeks of bad econobox. SUVs should provide passengers with ample legroom and comfort, while offering a decent amount of power and size. The Kia failed being an ... read more

Pros: Cheap price, roomier than it looks, knee airbag. Cons: Poor performance, cheap interior, bad ergonomic design. The Bottom Line: For a single, DINK couple or young family wanting to get an SUV its probably a good starting point at a low cost, but otherwise Id look elsewhere.
Underpowered, underdesigned and underperforms. From the outside the Kia Sportage looks like a cute little min-SUV, but the real test comes when driving it around.
