Pros: Very economical to drive, well designed interior. Cons: May not be the ideal automobile for long drive. The Bottom Line: Nicely styled interior and exterior, very economical to drive. A great car to drive around town.
A Solid Performer
Mazda protege SE, 2001
For 2001 Mazda increased the power of this highly rated compact sedan. They have done away with the
1.8-liter engine and replaced it by a 2-liters one that will develop 130 horsepower...

Pros: Excellent handling, 130 hp engine, great styling, lots of room inside Cons: Average resale value The Bottom Line: I love this car. It's a tight race in the compact car world, but in my opinion, the Protege wins the race!!
The car I own is a black 2001 Mazda Protege 2.0L LX 5-speed manual. The options I have are power door locks, ABS, and air-conditioning. Dual front 2nd generation air bags are standard. Side air bags are not available in Canada, but they are in the US....

Pros: Great handling, impressive features, very comfortable, decent gas mileage. Cons: Sport suspension good, but rough, needs a few more HP, CD/radio not up to par The Bottom Line: Mazda, which makes an excellant car in general, has a good, well-balanced and fun vehicle in the Protege5. Can't wait to really wind it out this summer!
The 2002 Mazda Protege5 is an impressive little hatchback, geared towards the 20-something audience. At the outset, it comes fairly well loaded with sunroof, CD player, 16" tires, chrome trim, power locks, windows, and other features for a very realistic...

Pros: Chassis, driving dynamics, reliability, cost, looks, engine, transmission Cons: Noise, odd option packages The Bottom Line: Like to drive? Need a cheap car? Dont like cheap cars? Get a Protege.
The comments I am making below are in reference to the Mazda Protege ES. Some, but not all apply to the LX 2.0. They do not apply to the 2001 DX which is a stripper and not what I was looking for. In essence, I was looking for a commuter so it needed...

Pros: Consumer-sporty looks, solid feel, lots of interior room. Cons: Unresponsive highway driving with 1.6 liter. The Bottom Line: With the 2.0 liter engine this would be a great car!
Due to my business travels, I tend to drive a variety of cars. When a model I haven't driven yet is offered, I like to make it my choice... As such, this will not be a review from a "long time owner" but rather like an unbiased test drive bullet-point...

Pros: Acceleration, looks, trunk space, interior layout Cons: expensive tires, jarringly tight suspension The Bottom Line: This is a good first car for someone who wants a little pep and doesn't mind getting his teeth jarred out of his skull occasionally.
I bought a used Protege LX 2.0 (with automatic transmission) about 3 years ago. I liked a lot of things about it. It was in my price range, it had a sunroof, and it had sort of sporty styling. Looking back, I'm still glad I bought this car, even ...

Pros: efficient, zippy, handles well Cons: seems like you're driving a tin-can (lighter weight construction?) The Bottom Line: If our budget hadn't allow for an extra $2000 to step up to the Honda Civic price range, the Mazda Protege would've been a good choice for us.
Back when we were car shopping, we almost bought a Mazda Protege. Instead we went with another Honda Civic (see the reviews). However, on our last vacation, we rented a Mazda Protege sedan and spent 10 days and 1800 miles seeing the sights of Nova...

Pros: Peppy 2.0 engine
Good interior room Cons: Could use little more power The Bottom Line: This model is very overlooked in this class, its a sleeper of a hit.
I consider myself fortunate that I was able to get a good deal on my 2001 Protege LX 2.0. Back in April 2001, Mazda had a 4.9% financing rate so I jumped at it, but ofcourse, events have happened and the rate even dropped to zero, but still it was a...

Pros: Excellent Handling
Great Gas Consumption
Nicely Powered.
Great Design Cons: None if a compact car is your forte The Bottom Line: Great reliable product. No wonder they continue to fly off the lots!
This 2001 model year Protege has been nothing short of fantastic. The only trips to the dealership in its first year of use have been for oil changes and tire rotations.
Exterior:
Nice looking vehicle, compact.
Interior:...

Pros: Great value for money. ESGT model looks great. Cons: Engine and heater/AC fan is loud. The Bottom Line: A perfect car for someone who is value conscious, but doesn't want to sacrifice look and relative performance.
I bought this car new and over two years later we still fully enjoy our 4-door, standard transmission, '01 Mazda Protege ESGT sedan. As my wife and I live on the West Coast of Canada this car was built in Japan we are very happy and impressed with ...

Pros: Comfy, love the sunroof, attractive interior, peppy, fun Cons: Not as responsive when downshifting to pass someone, stiff suspension makes for bumpy ride sometimes. The Bottom Line: The only reason not to buy one of these is that you'll have that silly "zoom zoom zoom" song stuck in your head all the time.
I just bought a used 2001 Mazda Protege LX 2.0 with a sunroof, spoiler, CD player and alloy wheels. It's a pretty sweet little car. I did have one problem though; about two weeks after I bought it the car overheated and I ended up having to replace ...

Very nice car. I have it since 14 months and I had no problems so far, except for some little plastic noise around the dash that has been correct. Very good handling: it take curves really fast without problems.
The ES version with GT package...

2001 Mazda Protege ES 2.0, Black Mica, 5spd, Power windows & locks. This is one of the best economy cars out there. I test drove all the competitors. This one had more bells and whistles for the money and just looked better. Before I bought this...

Pros: Sporty and fun, excellent safety features,& good power at a reasonable price Cons: Thin paint and not enough after-market products available The Bottom Line: Having owned the car for more than 2 years and having had no problems from the car, I would have to say this car is a wise investment.
Having one in my driveway was somewhat of an accident, having just blown the engine in my last car I had to find a replacement fast. I also did not have much money to play with. I checked with the Mazda dealership first because I was thinking of a used...

I got my 2001 Mazda Portege in June, 2001, and it hasn't let me down yet.
Its a perfect economy car for anyone that doesn't have the money for the more popular VW golf or Honda Civic or accord.
The Protege offers a smooth and...
