Pros: Outstanding reliability and still the best looking SUV Cons: No stereo upgrade package, pricey but worth it. The Bottom Line: I bought one in 96 and another in 01. That's how much I like it.
Let me first say I already own a 96 SR5 4x4 when was in the market for another vehicle for my wife. Our final candidates were the 4Runner, Lexus RX300, and Acura MDX. 1996 was the first model year for this generation. The demand for this SUV was so hot...

Pros: Fit and finish, quality, resale value Cons: Ugly seat patterns, crazy break-in period The Bottom Line: I am really happy about this purchase. I recommend it to anyone who looks at a vehicle purchase as an investment rather than a 5-year (or less) ride.
I am a truck guy. I like the way the handle and the usefulness of them. Don't get me wrong, I like cars too, but I consider them more of a third car rather than something that's actually useful.
I was looking for an SUV for my wife. Her...

Pros: Great features, comfortable, reliable, great SUV! Cons: Ease of getting in & out, cupholder size, price The Bottom Line: I love this SUV and would highly recommend it for anyone wanting this type of vehicle.
The 4Runner Limited is a great all-around SUV, despite its higher-than-necessary price when purchased new from a dealer.
What I love about the 4Runner Limited: The ride is great - no troubles handling curves, mountain roads, etc. at...

Pros: Great fit and finish; excellent engine; stylish; comfortable; reliable Cons: None except steep price The Bottom Line: I highly recommend the 4Runner. It is a great vehicle for those who can afford the excellent quality and reliability. Two thumbs up!
Up until this past December my mother drove a 1992 Camry, which I will review in the future. Almost 200,000 miles after buying that Camry she decided that it was time for a new car. We looked at the Accord and the Maxima, but she wanted a Toyota....

Pros: Slick Exterior, Toyota Truck Reliability, Lots of Cargo Space Cons: Basic and old ergonomics and most importantly stereo, stereo, and stereo The Bottom Line: Go get this car is you want something that will last a long time.
I just recently got a 2001 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4x4 and let me tell you it's a lot better than the '94 Ford Ranger I used to have. Ok, I'll elaborate further on things you don't already know...but the 4Runner is a really nice car and, I think, worth the...

Pros: Stylish looking exterior, excellent cargo volume and towing capacity. Cons: Bland looking interior, limited choice of safety features. The Bottom Line: The 2001 Toyota 4Runner is a very good SUV. It offers a lot of volume capacity and has and excellent towing capacity also.
Toyota 4Runner SR5, 2001
4Runner 4U
If you try to see the difference between the 2001 4Runner model and last year edition you will have to look past the exterior of this SUV. The only thing that changed with the body from 2000 and...

Pros: Build quality extraordinary
Ride very smooth Cons: Very expensive for what you get...
No locking rear differential anymore... The Bottom Line: Much improved over previous models, but still not worth the $$$ to me.
Let it be said that I am not one to "hold a grudge" against a company because their products did not please me the first time around.
The mid-to-late 1990's 4Runners did not impress me in the least, due to serious engineering defects (engine,...

Pros: All cars and trucks should be as reliable as my Toyota. Good on gas too! Cons: Made for the average sized human. Don't buy it if you are tall or large. The Bottom Line: Excellent vehicle. I bought it because it's practical. Everyone should own one.
I was fed up with my '01 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP. What a piece of garbage!! I researched reliability and came to Toyota. I first tested the Sequoia and loved it, but really couldn't afford it. I bought the 01' 4-runner used w/ 40K miles, and I love ...

Pros: Smooth V6; aggressive looks; factory incentives; proven design Cons: Interior needs updating The Bottom Line: If you need to go off-road, or are just attached to its rugged looks, the 4Runner is a fine choice. If not, try its slightly less expensive sibling, the Highlander.
When Toyota introduced the mid-size Highlander and full-size Sequoia for 2001, some questioned Toyota's decision to offer five models of sport utility vehicles in its lineup. Speculation ensued -- would the Highlander replace the 4Runner, or merely...

Pros: Smooth, quiet ride, excellent visibility/commanding ride height, great features, strong engine Cons: Seats, price The Bottom Line: A good little SUV with an extortionist price
Introduction
A few things to understand before diving into my review is simply that though I have driven many trucks and SUVs in my time I am a car guy and always will be. This shouldn't be seen as foreshadowing for a...

Pros: Good brakes; great power; impressive turning ratio; serious bumpers; comfortable front seats; nice stereo Cons: Too expensive; dreadful ride; scary handling; pronounced road/wind noise; out-of-reach controls The Bottom Line: Who could ask for anything more? At this price, I certainly could!
I'm renting the 4Runner and have had it just over three weeks. I've spent time driving it on both highways and back roads, maneuvering it in and out of parallel parking spaces, braving the pothole stricken streets of Boston, and threading it through the...

Pros: wet driving is good. safety. airbags. nice styling. great off-road ability. gas mileage. engine. Cons: would be better if it had a straight axle. option of e-locker would be great.
This is the real deal. Like a mini Land Cruiser this SUV can and will go anywhere. I would suggest not getting the 2wd version. The 4wd is what this truck is all about. I had a 1991 4runner and it was great but only 2wd and did not have any airbags. My wife and I decided to get a newer and more safe SUV. I liked the updated looks of the 3rd generation 4runner and likes what it came with. It is a solid SUV with many of the nice things standard. If you are going to just go to the store and pick the kids up from gymnastics class this is not a truck for you..get a Tahoe. If you want to go on trails and ride in the mud..this is for you.

Pros: Space, Durability, and Safety Cons: Gas mileage is all I can come up with.
I just recently bought my Toyota 4Runner. I love it. I had one previously (1994) and couldn't wait to get another one. If you want durability and piece of mind, get yourself a 4Runner. It will not disappoint you.

Pros: Smooth ride, good looking, comfortable interior, quality service Cons: None
The 2001 Toyota 4Runner has proven to be a Godsend for me and for my family. We purchased one used about 6 months ago and it has been the most reliable car we've had to date. We live in the Rocky Mountains, so 4 wheel drive is a must. The 4Runner provides that along with a spacious and comfortable interior (seats 5), a very smooth ride, and a very eye-appealing exterior. And, because it is made by Toyota, it is reliable for many, many miles, and has very quality service that comes with it. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in a high quality used vehicle, whether in need of 4 wheel drive or not, it suits your every need.

Not in love w/ my 4Runner anymore

Pros: Love the look and ride of it. Cons: Expensive diagnostics w/ no resolution, backup lights not good, instruments in inconvenient locations.
I bought my 2001 4Runner SR5 4WD 2 years ago and loved it. No problems until about 6 months ago. While traveling out of town, the check engine light and two VSC lights came on. Spent $500 at an out of town Toyota dealership only to have the lights come back on shortly after I arrived home. Have now visited my local Toyota dealership 6 times and the lights are still on. I bought the Toyota because of the dependability (and there doesn't seem to be a thing mechanically wrong with my truck), but am tired of spending money and being inconvenienced in order to get 3 lights turned off. It has been diagnosed many times and minor things have been replaced (fuel sensor, etc). Approaching the $1,000 mark now - seems to be something wrong with this picture. I don't feel like I'm going to be stranded on the side of the road, but this is aggravating.
