Toyota Celica Hits Stride

by vtmonney
Nov 30 '01

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: New engine creates excellent power
Cons: Small interior cramps larger drivers
The Bottom Line: If you have a desire for a fast car and low price tag, go for it.

The new vvtli engine in the 2001 Celica GTS creates 180 horses of pure power. The new engine combined with the 6 speed maunual transmission (available in the GTS model) makes for quick launches and a respectable top speed. The new aggressive styling is...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Handling, fuel economy, high end acceleration, ergonomics, looks great, interior design
Cons: Back seat for storage only, rear vision, low end torque
The Bottom Line: Depends on what you need in a car, but if you want reliable, fun, great looking transportation, it's hard to beat!

I purchased my Celica at New Years 2002. It's a great driver's car for a single person like myself. It's fun to drive while still getting great fuel economy (about 26mpg city, 38mpg highway). The pros and cons list my ideas pretty well. The cons are...

Pros: Handles well, good performance and gas mileage
Cons: Rear lights could been designed better
The Bottom Line: Good sports car for the price

My friend Tommy bought his 2001 Toyota Celica last month. We trust each other when it comes to cars. He let me take it for a spin for an afternoon. I revved the engine up to seven thousand RPM and slid my foot off the clutch (from a dead stop). After...

Great little sports car for people under 6 feet tall

Pros: Great looking sports car, Built by Toyota, and is fairly inexpensive
Cons: A bit small inside for anybody over 6 feet tall especially in the back seats
The Bottom Line: Great little sports car if you are able to feel comfortable in the fairly small interior.

I work for Hertz Rent-A-Car and am able to drive home any car I wish every night. The Toyota Celica GT is a great little sports car that I take quite often. I am 6'3" and the car is a bit tight for me, but I still fit okay. Everybody else at work that is...

Not Reliable

Pros: Fun to drive!
Cons: questionable transmission reliability, catalytic converter reliability and oil consumption.
I bought the 2001 Toyota Celica GT as a Certified Toyota Vehicle at 43K miles. I drive a considerable amount of highway miles and chose the car because of Toyota's reputation for reliability. At 80K, the catalytic converter failed and was replaced. At 82K, the manual 5 speed transmission failed, requiring replacement which Toyota would not cover under warranty. Apparently when I bought the car in September 2005, the Toyota Certified warranty was for 6 years from original purchase or 100K miles. In October 2005, Toyota changed the warranty to 7 years/100K. The transmission (a $3500 item) failed in year 6 by 19 days. If I bought the car two weeks after I did, it would have been covered.
Toyota - their service and support is awful, and I'm beginning to seriously question their hard earned reputation for reliability. I have had 7 Toyota over 35 years, and this car is by far the worst Toyota I've owned. Add to it a cavalier and rude method of treating a loyal long-term customer - I'm saddened by that, and think Toyota should be ashamed.

Sexy, Fun, an Excitement to Drive Everyday!

Pros: It's sexy, reliable, and most of all.. FUN to drive!
Cons: Don't try to make anyone over 5'6" sit in the backseats!
I've had this car since 2001 and I've loved it since 2001! The aerodynamic shape of the car looks sexy, sleek, and fast! The Celica has great suspension, meaning no worries about taking fast, sharp turns! I was also amazed with the quality of the sound system in the car!
The gas mileage is good. I have to admit, although I am not driving a gas eating machine it is still not as good as the previous car I owned. But what the heck, this car looks good, sounds good, and it's reliable!
For some reason, I can't help but step the petal to the metal and speed off as if in a race, while hoping I won't get pulled over by a police officer!

Pros: Sleek style, good fuel economy
Cons: Small back seat. Somewhat tough to see out the back.
I have the GTS, automatic with the sport shift feature. The car handles great, looks great and the interior is made so that everything is within easy reach. The sportshift/overdrive feature is just gravy on top.

Pros: gets attention for it's sporty look, good stereo, descent fuel economy, just fun.
Cons: small backseat & trunk, poor paint job, very uncomfortable seating ,high car insurance,
My fiance bought this in 2003 used. He absolutely loved it.
He loved the idea of how fast it would accelerate.
It's great car for a teenage guy/girl. We got sick of it cause we could never have any passengers in the back.
Road trips were terrible with it.
I'm glad we sold it, but I do miss it sometimes.

Great Car for the Price

Pros: Cute, sporty and good on gas.
Cons: Poor visibility out of the back, limited back seat space and a somewhat noisy ride!
My 2001 Celica has been very reliable.  All that it's needed is regular maintenance and a few adjustments.  It looks stylish and runs great.  The back is a little cramped but the driver's area has enough space for me.  However, despite the minor cons I have mentioned, I wish they still made them!
