Pros: Not too expensive, unique, quiet engine when idling Cons: Not all that comfortable The Bottom Line: I am certainly not a sports car enthusiast. I am just a wife whose husband is going through premature midlife crisis. This review is written from that perspective.
So your husband (or wife, but this car seems to me to be a guy’s car!) tells you they want a Toyota MR2 Spyder. A WHAT? Yes, a Spyder. It’s a little-known non-advertised 2-seater sports car manufactured by Toyota. I’ve been told it looks kind of like...

Pros: Low cost, good gas mileage, roomy interior Cons: Low power, no storage, continuous upgrade cycle The Bottom Line: Too many shortcomings plague this car and keep it from being a truly stellar buy. If Toyota can solve these problems in the future then I'll revisit the opinion.
Last year I authored an opinion for the 2000 MR2 Spyder in which I stated that it was better than a Boxster. To clarify at the time I was an owner of the 2000 MR2 Spyder and was looking solely at a price/performance comparison. A buyer could spend $25K...

Pros: Superior Looks, Great Handling, Cheaper than Competition, Good Fuel Economy, Quality Construction Cons: Ridiculously Limited Storage Space, Substandard Acceleration, Limited Production The Bottom Line: Put the top down and the Spyder is one of the finest driving experiences available. Just dont try to bring anything with you!
The Toyota MR2 Spyder is one of the latest of the 2 seater “lower-priced” high-performance roadsters that have become enormously popular over the past decade. Other cars in the niche include the Porsche Boxster, BMW Z3, the Honda S2000 and the...

Pros: Fast, great power/weight ratio, aggresive styling, easy-to-use manual top Cons: Where's the roll bar? The Bottom Line: Fast little bugger with no respect for the speed limit or other drivers!
Though not a Mazda Miata (which is a little more fun to drive - you get to thrash it around the track more), the 2001 Toyota MR2 Spyder comes pretty close!
Test driven at a dealership (great sales person, who let me thrash the car as long as...

Pros: Fun to drive. Great handling. All options included. Cons: Limited storage space. No cruise control. The Bottom Line: It's great to pay $25k for something this fun to drive. Sure, it's impractical, but I love it when people stop me and want to look at my Porsche!
I have been an avid sports car fan for quite some time, owning a Nissan 300 ZX as well as a Mitsubishi 3000 GT VR4. After driving a Jeep Wrangler for a couple years, I had a craving for a sports car again.
So, after months of research and road...

Pros: Unique styling, great handling, peppy acceleration, fun to drive, great gas mileage, comfortable seats Cons: Lack of storage, 140 wear rated tires (sticky, but not long lasting) The Bottom Line: Looking for a convertible sports car that's a head turner and fun to own and drive? Look no further than the MR2 Spyder. Find one, buy it, drive it, smile.
I needed a replacement car after my 1995 Integra was humiliated by being stripped and dumped on a side street resting on 4 donuts. Looking around for a suitable fun to drive car (okay - I am in the second half of my 40's and the second half of my...

Pros: Cute, fun, reliable, yet affordable sports car! Cons: Limited storage space The Bottom Line: Buy it, drive it, love it. It's like a little ecosystem unto itself. You can buy a car to haul stuff in, or you can buy this car to drive!
As the title implies, fifteen years ago I purchased a cute little black car. I was a single mother of one, and I figured I only needed a two-seater. Although it was a budgetary stretch, I also figured I'd have it forever. 240,000+ miles later, I was...

Pros: Sleek, Quick, Attention grabber Cons: Expensive to fix, Needs upgrades The Bottom Line: For recreation use, rarely used and only for fun, then I would recommend it. Otherwise, No, because it simply isn't practical to try to use it for everyday things.
This car was a gift to me on my 17th birthday, when I received my license. I absolutely LOVED it...but then again, I was in high school. The handling was amazing, engine was surprisingly quiet, and the storage isn't as bad as you would think it was. ...

Pros: Great looking car, incredibly fun to drive. Cons: Not enough power, difficult for dealerships to service The Bottom Line: It's incredible fun and a joy to drive. Buy it as a weekend guy and a toy, but it's not optimal for a daily driver.
I've made a few observations after having the car for eight months:
- The tachometer is the primary gauge on the console since it's the largest of the three gauges and is in the middle; the speedometer is smaller and on the left side....

Pros: Small convertible, strong engine, Toyota reliability Cons: Good luck finding one - they are limited, very little storage space, no cruise control The Bottom Line: If you can find one, buy it. It's an investment since they are so limited.
People will stare when you drive this car because there are so few of them out on the road. Toyota is only making 5,000 a year. This is great if you're lucky enough to find one. However, since they are so limited dealers are marking up the prices....

Pros: Looks great, economical, a blast to drive! Cons: Tiny cargo space The Bottom Line: If you love the classic British sports cars, you will be thrilled with the Spyder.
I learned to drive in a Triumph TR4, quite a roadster from the late-1960's. The Toyota MR2 Spyder is darned close, and much better in terms of safety features. I've yet to hit the 1,000 mile mark on mine so I have not tested its performance to the limit,...

Pros: Aggressive Looks, Handling, Fun for the Money, Standard Equipment, Easy to use convertible top Cons: Storage is limited, Six speed would be nice The Bottom Line: You will be hard pressed to find more fun for the dollar. This is an awesome little convertible. Toyota has a winner with this edition of the MR2.
This is Toyota's entry into the world of affordable sports cars. The 2001 MR2 Spyder is a fantastic little convertible, and I challenge you to find more FUN for the dollar.
For only having 138 hp @ 6400 rpm the MR2 is very zippy. I only...

Storage The Bottom Line: If you are willing to live with its limitations it's the best thing since sliced bread. But know what you're getting into.
After being out of two seat sports cars for nearly twenty years, 14 months ago I convinced my skeptical wife and we bought one. She hates it. I love it.
I love the feels-like-it's-on-a -rail handling, the power is adequate, though not much...

Pros: Porsche-like styling, Excellent Handling, Inexpensive Cons: Limited Storage The Bottom Line: Buy it, lease it, rent it. Just get back to having fun behind the wheel.
This car is a paradox looking for a place to happen. The moment the weather is warm, you will want to take the top down and drive your significant other to the nearest beach destination...barely being able to fit a small gym bag in the tiny storage...
