Pros: Compact, can fit more than you'd think (besides carseats). Superficially, it's nice looking. Cons: Only aloud 15 words here. See above. The Bottom Line: Avoid if you have kids. Standard car seats DO NOT fit in this car. Host of mechanical problems.
I've had my VW Golf for six years and I have to say I have more complaints than I do positive things to say about it. It has only had two owners, myself and the person I bought it from, so it wasn't abused so to speak. Here's my list of cons. Where do I ... read more

Pros: heated seats, sun roof, nice sound system Cons: reliability, safety, expense The Bottom Line: Avoid this car at all costs! It will only bring you stress.
I bought this diesel car used, and initially, I loved it. The golf was cute, compact, and fit my lifestyle. However, soon after buying it, I ran into problem after problem with it, one more expensive than the next. I have owned this car for 1 year and a ... read more

Pros: Reliable, smooth and everything still works on it. Cons: The leaks and a couple of design goofs. Now the glove box door broke. The Bottom Line: I wouldn't hesitate to buy another Golf.
I bought my 4-door VW Golf in 2001 and have been very satisfied with the car in many ways and aggravated in a few. The handles for closing the 5th door is so natural that I wonder why nobody thought of it before. They are on the front of the door ... read more

Pros: Solid, decent gas mileage, fun to drive Cons: No complaints worth mentioning here The Bottom Line: There is nothing bad to say about this car. I love it.
I bought my black 2001 2.0 litre Golf new in October 2001. I was looking for a used car for under $20,000, and there was a VW year-end deal on a new one - how could I refuse it? I was not interested in any American product, nor a hatchback Honda Civic ... read more

Pros: Fuel efficiency, size, style, Monsoon Sound System, cup holders (easy access), space Cons: A bit noisier than most gas cars, but still much quieter than older diesels The Bottom Line: If you are looking for a good small car, you can't beat the fuel efficiency, reliability and fun of the VW Golf. Will buy again in the future.
There is only one way you can describe this car- Awesome. I bought the car from my brother this summer and absolutely love it (and am laughing at all the people driving gas guzzlers with the high gas prices). Fuel mileage is excellent- my bro was ... read more

Pros: Build quality, engine, four wheel drive, extras, power. Cons: Some plastic facings, basic model lacks refinement. The Bottom Line: A superb car in its class. Extras required.
I imported a 2001 VW Golf TDi 4Motion to the UK from Germany as my Audi gave up the ghost due to a cracked cylinder head. Sceptical at first that it was too small I soon realised that there was ample room for me and my sports kit. The model I have is ... read more

Pros: Handling, acceleration, interior, comfort, space Cons: Linty seats, my old car still haunting me... The Bottom Line: This is not a BMW. It's not designed as a BMW. But it's the absolute best fuel-efficient hatchback you'll find.
I've been looking at getting a VW Golf/GTI for about three years now. My former car was an old Niss ... read more

Pros: TDI engine gets 40-50 mpg yet is subjectively quick and smooth. Tight body. Quality interior. Cons: A lot of body lean in corners. Cupholders. Defective washer fluid warning light. The Bottom Line: Definitely worth the purchase if you drive more than 15k miles a year due to superb turbo-diesel engine fuel economy and performance.
The best kept secret in the U.S. car market is how good the turbo-diesel engine has become and it's only available in VW Golfs and Jettas. I have a 2003 Golf GL 4dr 5sp with the TDI engine and it is a great car! I'm getting 40-50 mpg in an engine thats ... read more

Pros: excellent fuel use, awesome engine Cons: electrical problems will cost you up the yin-yang, mudguard is cheap The Bottom Line: This is a great car for the city, excellent gas mileage, a blast to drive. If you live around a lot of dirt roads - say no to this car.
INTRO I had a VW Beetle prior to owning this car. However, I had 3 accidents in the Beetle (all caused by the other driver) and decided that maybe a black Beetle wasn't for me. So I traded it in for a 2001 Golf TDI. I'd never had a diesel engine ... read more

Pros: Cool Euro styling, outstanding fuel mileage, well-built German car Cons: no major complaints - I love this car! The Bottom Line: You can't beat the value for price, comfort, ride, and performance. The TDI engine speaks for itself. Test drive one and you'll be amazed at its torque and mileage.
Why a TDI?
My wife and I were looking at used Jettas two years ago. We went to the dealership, and they showed us a 98' Jetta TDI. I didn't think of getting a diesel at the time, but also was unaware of the great improvements to diesel engines that ... read more

Pros: Fuel Economy
Torque
Quiet Highway Cruising
Handling Cons: Inconsistent service
Requires a "mind shift" to own. The Bottom Line: 50MPG without the complexity and unproven reliability of 'whizbang' hybrids. You'll never see a hybrid semi-tractor because turbo direct injection (TDI) is the answer for 'real' driving.
Outstanding alternative to either low mpg gas vehicles or sluggish, overly complex, hybrids. Solid German engineering that has taken diesel technology to a new level of performance. Bought my first one a year ago and have loved every mile of driving. ... read more

Pros: Picks up well and fun to drive when it's not in the shop. Cons: Several problems. Driving a lemon. The Bottom Line: Best of luck.
I was surprised to read all the positive reviews about the 2001 GTIs. Driving my car the first month and half was fun. The car was smooth, it picked up really really well. After that, however, I became a frequent customer to VW service. My car was in ... read more

Pros: Safe, sturdy, fit interior finish, great performance, lots of options standard! Cons: rattles and creaks, overworked and understaffed VW dealerships The Bottom Line: Recommend the VW, but I would shy away from the 1.8T. Vehicle is extremely comfortable, performs wonderfully when everything is working right, loaded with standard options, and has personality
I leased my 1.8T Golf in February 2001. I was so excited to finally have one; the GolfIV is so stylish and I read many positive reviews about this car. Initially, though, the first 6 months of ownership were very very trying. During that time, the ... read more

Pros: Fun to drive, Great ride, Turbo really moves, Well built Cons: Could not find car with all the options I wanted, Plastic parts breaking off The Bottom Line: I've enjoyed driving it for the past 4 years. It's been very dependable. I'm sorry VW has done away with the Turbo; it was the perfect car: economy and power.
I've owned my VW Golf GLS 1.8T for 4 years now and I still love it. I got it with the luxury, winter, Monsoon and, of course, the Turbo Packages. I did want sports suspension and I didn't want Monsoon, but after 2 weeks of searching the sales woman at ... read more
