2001.5 Passat GLX

by edmer
Jun 26 '01

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Quality of workmanship; safety features; dollar value
Cons: Silly front-seat cupholders; climate controls.
The Bottom Line: I like it's looks, the many bells and whistles that are standard, and the quality of workmanship. So far, I'd recommend this car, most highly.

This car could easily be considered a luxury sedan, based upon the quality of manufacture and the "goodies" that are standard to the marque. The most unusual of these is the right-side mirror that, if the driver desires, moves in and down, enabling...

2001 Passat GLS V6 - Great Car!

by heipassat
Jan 05 '01

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: smooth ride, quality, handling, looks
Cons: stock wheels/tires, smallish rearview mirrors, gas guzzler

After several months of researching the Audi A4 and BMW 3 series line of cars, I found that the interior space was too confining, especially in the back. Even though I don't typically have back seat passengers, I wanted space for my adult friends on...

Passat GLS, is it worth it?

by DrMobots
Feb 07 '01

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Clean, conservative styling, safety, roominess, tiptronics transmission
Cons: turbo 4 is underpowered, expensive
The Bottom Line: If you want maximum safety for the least money, this is the car. Otherwise it is a little expensive and underpowered.

After I bought my own Subaru last year, I helped my parent car shop to replace their 11-year-old Plymouth Acclaim. They wanted as many air-bags as possible without paying a lot of money. The Passat was a natural choice.

The overall design of...

4WD for $28K? Yes! + Compro vs. Accord, Camry, Altima

by sr4b
Nov 05 '01

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Solid fit and finish, precise steering, elegant
Cons: Pricey vs. Accord or Camry; history of electrical problems.
The Bottom Line: If you want an expensive-feeling, solid, sporty, safe mid-size sedan that has 4WD, this is your car.

We just bought a 2001.5 Passat GLX 4Motion for $28,000 at McKenna VW. There are special factory incentives on the 2001.5's right now. So if you find one, you should get a comparable deal. This particular dealer is $1,000 less than other dealers in the...

Now this is a car!

Sep 09 '02 - Updated Oct 14 '02

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: More common sense engineering pleasure and safety than any other vehicle in its class.
Cons: Cruise control location.
The Bottom Line: Best in its class. A new benchmark.

A majority of negative comments regarding the Passat stem from not wanting anyone to believe the quality of a lower-line Mercedes, BMW, or even an Audi (same company) can be had in this car. I think the most concise way to address this sentiment is to...

Fun Car...Expensive to Maintain and Insure!

by migurl
Sep 18 '05 - Updated Sep 19 '05

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Fun, Safe, well built
Cons: Expensive to maintain and insure
The Bottom Line: Buy it if you can afford big bucks for upkeep

Let me start by saying that I just love this car. It's a GLS with the 4 cylinder 1.8L Turbo engine which is quick and fun with the 5 speed manual transmission. It's safe with its combined 8 drivers and passengers side airbags, and quite a looker. And, ...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 1.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Looks nice, good gas mileage, excellent in a car accident
Cons: Loads of engine problems, high priced, cheap interior
The Bottom Line: BUYER BEWARE

I purchased this vehicle in 2007, with 64,000 miles. I fell in love immediatly with this car and that love turned into hate in just a matter of months. First off, when I took the car for it's first oil change I was warned of oil sludge which is common ...

Expensive Junk

Dec 02 '03 - Updated Dec 06 '03

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 1.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Fun to drive, looks nice
Cons: Unreliable, poor quality, expensive, extremely expensive to fix, VW CustomerCare and dealers are awful
The Bottom Line: Stay away from VW. They'll rip you off.

I own 2001 Passat GLS V6 (manual) since September 2000. I used to like this car. It is fun to drive. Steering and handling is very nice. 2.8L engine has quite a lot of power and the gearbox has a good look&feel. All that power (190hp) does not make it a ...

2001 Passat Leaks Water

by sharka7777
Jan 28 '04

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 2.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Nice car, poor post-sales support/consumer relief
Cons: Don't buy a VW when this is their attitude
The Bottom Line: Water leaks are your responsibility as far as VW is concerned. Pollen filters that get clogged under normal driving conditions short out electronics and it's your fault!

I own a 2001 Passat GLX with approximately 20K miles. I live in the Northern California area and drive under normal conditions. Recently a large amount of water was discovered seeping into the front passenger seat. It soaks through car mats and proceded ...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 2.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Rides nice, very room in trunk & backseat. Great safety features!
Cons: In the dealerships garage more than MY garage!!!
The Bottom Line: No-To expensive to repair while you're still paying the thing off!!

Looked all over for sporty looking family car/sedan and decided on the Passat..now I'm regretting it. I've had this car for three years and it's been in the shop 3-4 times for minor to huge problems. Within the first 6 months I had a problem with the ...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Roomness, reliable
Cons: Its still Passat. No individuality.
The Bottom Line: Great car without own face.

When I first tested this car it was excellent. I realy liked that. I had Passat 1.9 TDI Trendline with 130 HP and 6 speed manual transmission. Overall handling was very good. Unfortunately I had not Triptronic, but I heard that it is almost as good as...

Jan 28 '02

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Looks great, drives very well
Cons: Manual seat adjustments a little hard to maneuver
The Bottom Line: Buy it - you'll love it.

I love my Passat. The vehicle drives incredibly well, and feels like a luxury car despite the fact that I paid only $25,000 for it. The body looks great and stands up to dings very well (even in Austin, where dinging car doors is a sport). The ride is...

The best value car among the mid-sized sedans below $30K

by nemakv
Mar 05 '03

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: 1.8 T engine with ULEV, low drag coefficient, handling, ride, safety futures, standard options
Cons: initial acceleration is noisy, velour seats pick every lint and fiber, premium gasoline requirement
The Bottom Line: Test it and you will find out about this superb sporty sedan!

Compared to Camry and other mainstream family sedans, the New Passat GLS I purchased last fall (2001.5 model year) with AT/Tiptronic and Luxury package is a distinctive mid-size car with superb engineering and performance with an Audi- and BMW-like...
