Pros: Looks nice, good gas mileage, excellent in a car accident
Cons: Loads of engine problems, high priced, cheap interior
The Bottom Line: BUYER BEWARE

I purchased this vehicle in 2007, with 64,000 miles. I fell in love immediatly with this car and that love turned into hate in just a matter of months. First off, when I took the car for it's first oil change I was warned of oil sludge which is common ... read more

Pros: Fun to drive, at first.....that's about it!
Cons: Can't list them all in 15 words.
The Bottom Line: Don't buy this car unless you have money to throw away or just like paying dealership prices.

I bought the 2001 Passat with the 1.8 liter turbo. It was demonstrated well by the salesman at the dealership and I was impressed with the car. We bought the car, and took it to the dealership when it was time for the scheduled maintenance, we were ... read more

Dec 19, 2006 (Not Yet Rated)

Author's Product Rating: 10 Recommended: No

Pros: Great gas mileage, comfortable, great in snow and on ice, nice sound quality, spacious
Cons: frequent trips for repairs it's not the easy fixes that break on this thing
The Bottom Line: Only buy if you enjoy throwing away money on a pretty car in the drive way- sitting there because you can't afford to fix it

I bought my 01 Passat to save on the gas prices that my Nissan Xterra was eating up, and I had no idea that I would instead be looking to dump all that extra money & more into repairs. I'd always heard great things about these cars and had friends that ... read more

The Bottom Line: Buy it if you can afford big bucks for upkeep

Let me start by saying that I just love this car. It's a GLS with the 4 cylinder 1.8L Turbo engine which is quick and fun with the 5 speed manual transmission. It's safe with its combined 8 drivers and passengers side airbags, and quite a looker. And, ... read more

A carmaker to avoid

by
Aug 1, 2005 - Updated Aug 27, 2005 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 10 Recommended: No

Pros: looks good, handles ok for a family car, strong engine.
Cons: Time and money drain. Poor resale value - ends up costing like a BMW.
The Bottom Line: Stay away. Check out Acura TSX if you are looking at Passat GLX, Subaru or Honda if you are looking at GL or GLS.

I bought a new 2001 VW Passat GLX in Oct. 2000. It is FWD, manual transmission. Has all the GLX options - automatic a/c, V6, leather, what have you. Unfortunately, my experience was not great, the car keeps stealing my time and money. Consider Acura, ... read more

I love this car. Sleek, black, and looks fantastic with a Thule rack and cargo carrier. This car handles like a dream, and the Consumer Reports Magazine review, putting this car at the top of the pile, is right on the money. We were looking for an ... read more

2001 Passat Leaks Water

by
Jan 28, 2004 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 20 Recommended: No

Pros: Nice car, poor post-sales support/consumer relief
Cons: Don't buy a VW when this is their attitude
The Bottom Line: Water leaks are your responsibility as far as VW is concerned. Pollen filters that get clogged under normal driving conditions short out electronics and it's your fault!

I own a 2001 Passat GLX with approximately 20K miles. I live in the Northern California area and drive under normal conditions. Recently a large amount of water was discovered seeping into the front passenger seat. It soaks through car mats and proceded ... read more

The Bottom Line: Stay away from VW. They'll rip you off.

I own 2001 Passat GLS V6 (manual) since September 2000. I used to like this car. It is fun to drive. Steering and handling is very nice. 2.8L engine has quite a lot of power and the gearbox has a good look&feel. All that power (190hp) does not make it a ... read more

Pros: Sweet engine and transmission. Safest car for the money. Looks good.
Cons: Minor but persistent and very annoying quality and reliability issues.
The Bottom Line: I wish there was something better for my needs and budget but it seems there is not.

I am a safety freak. I have two small children and my greatest fear is having something happen to one of them on the road. Road trauma is the single biggest cause of death among kids aged 1-17. So when the time came to buy a car I did my ... read more

Cons: cloth upholstery. Inconvenient rotator for manually-adjustable power seats, premium gasoline
The Bottom Line: Best Buy for below $40K car segment. The New Passat is for those who prefer the road manners, handling, performance and quality of BMW, Audi and Mercedes for less money.
