Pros: A very competent SUV that is well-built and easy to live with. Cons: Mediocre gas mileage. Requires premium fuel. The Bottom Line: The 2002 Acura MDX Touring is a very competent car-like SUV that is well-built, thoughtfully designed, and a pleasure to own.
I have owned my 2002 Acura MDX Touring version for eight months, and I'm just as happy with the car today as I was the day I bought it. I use it for daily commuting as well as extensive off-road junkets and driving on snow and ice in the Sierra. The MDX...

Pros: gas mileage, smooth quiet engine, 3rd row seating, comfortable interior.
Cons: non-negotiable price, long wait, road noise @ highway speed The Bottom Line: Wait until the 2003 models arrive. There are no discounts on the remaining 2002 models.
I have owned the 2002 MDX for just about a month and have driven the truck just over 1000 miles. This is such an upgrade from my previously owned SUV. I traded in a 2000 Ford Expedition and have no regrets. Before purchasing the MDX a test drove the...

Pros: Ride, performance, handling, roominess, overall quality Cons: Cheap interior plastics, Touring option over-priced. The Bottom Line: I recommend this vehicle for an all around SUV that while not perfect in any one things, does everything very well, and does it with class.
I previously reviewed a 2002 based on a test drive. I now own a 2002 with just under 1000 miles.
We purchased the vehicle (MSRP) in Southern Calif. (we live in Northern CA) as we wanted a specific color and these are in high demand. I was tired...

Pros: The appearance, handling, and comfort Cons: Gas mileage could still be better, but not too bad The Bottom Line: I enjoy driving the MDX. It has made driving fun for me again and that is the best part!
I traded my Ford Expedition for the 2002 Acura MDX. I had owned an Acura before so I was familiar with the quality and service. I must be one of the only people who received a really good discount on this car. I had originally ordered the beige or...

Pros: Versatile, spacious, car-like ride, loaded with options Cons: Price not negotiable, dealers think it's gold, limited availability, waiting The Bottom Line: If you can afford to wait and can afford to pay, go for it. Expect poor treatment from the dealer and expect great treatment from the car.
I just brought my base MDX home yesterday after a 5 month wait. I chose a base model because it comes loaded with amenities that are usually options on other SUVs. The only other major options are the Touring package and the Navigation system. Each...

Pros: Cornering, 3rd row split folding seat, sunroof, acceleration, smooth ride. Cons: Sound system. It can be improved inexpensively. The Bottom Line: Unless you want to spend another $10K on an X5, this is the best SUV under $40K. Sports-car-like ride.
When we decided to downsize from our Expedition for fuel economy purposes, we decided on the Mountaineer. We hit an Acura dealer en route to Mercury dealer where we planned to buy a Moutaineer. Test-drove an MDX, fell in love. Dealer wanted MSRP. We left...

Luxury SUV with great handling

Pros: Superb handling, and visibility and COMFORT!
Cons: Doesn't have automatic lights or door locks or hands free cell phone option.
I bought this car with only 2,000 miles on it. What a wonderful purchase. It is so comfortable and spoils me with all the interior details. I was used to a Honda Passport which handled well but stepping up to this MDX was a treat. I do wish I bought the newer version instead. There are some details like hands free cell service I would have enjoyed having.
I now have 6,000 miles on this one and every minute in it has been a joy. I am a small woman and feel complete control and visibility when driving. I can see all around me and it doesn't feel like a heavy or large SUV.
Mine came with chrome wheels which make the car pop a little more visually. I would recommend this car to anyone and good deals can be had with Acura.

Pros: lots of room, luxury and features for the price Cons: recalled transmission
We bought our 2002 MDX brand new and it was everything we wanted in a family car. Luxury, great handling, lots of room....then the transmission was recalled this year (04)
Acura replaced my transmission and the car hasn't run well since. In the last 2 months, it's been in for service at least 4 times. We are so sad - this was our favorite car and we were planning on keeping it for a long time. I'm not sure whether I'll be purchasing another MDX. We hope that maybe we just had one with some glitches and IF we did purchase another Acura that it would last longer than 2 years.

Great Car

Pros: Very comfortable, Car-like ride, Reliable Cons: Small gas tank, Some strange switch locations
I have had my 2002 MDX for about a year and a half and think its a wonderful car. I travel a great deal between Colorado and Tennessee and this is the best long-distance travel car I have ever driven. I am about 6'3" and one of the reasons I chose the MDX is the fact that it has immense interior room but is not a massive truck-like SUV and it drives like a car. I have never driven an SUV that is as much like a car as the MDX. I will keep this car for a long time, and will get another Acura in a second!

Pros: Sweet ride, very good quality, nice design Cons: 2nd row seating doesn't fold flat, auto headlights
Luv it, luv it, luv it! Need I say more? Okay, if you insist...only thing I found unusual is the lack of automatic headlights. I've driven lesser quality suv's that have this feature so was a little surprised to find the MDX doesn't have it. Things that make you go hmmm... Hopefully, this won't be overlooked in future designs as I definitely plan on buying another in a few years. Also, like the way all the controls are set up for easy reach. Wouldn't mind if they put just a lil more power in the sound system. Yes, I have the 8-speaker Bose system but I got the music in me & like it LOUD!!! lol If you're debating getting running boards I recommend the chrome sport bars as they improve the looks of the vehicle tremendously.

91 Octane

Pros: Third row, sleek look and smooth ride. Cons: Needs 91 Octane gas, poor headrest design and difficult to access the spare tire.
I just purchased a 2002 MDX with 61,000 miles on it. It looks as good as new!
The 3 things that I needed to find out after buying it were:
1)Can you combine 93 octane and 89 octane to make 91 octane (which is required by owners manual).
The answer according to HESS headquarters is 2/3 93 octane and 1/3 89 octane will make 91 octane.
2)Has anyone complained that the headrest does not lean forward enough to protect your head from whiplash in the event of a rear collision.
The answer is that I was the first person to bring it to their attention. I notice that the 2006 model has a head rest that does lean forward.
3)When you have to change a flat tire, do you take the tire from underneath the car or do you access it from the trunk?
The answer is from underneath but you have to release the lock from inside the trunk, which makes it diffucult to return the spare tire back in place because the tire is heavy and it would need to be lifted in place and re-screwed back in.

Pros: Smart interior. engine is a smooth powerful marvel. Seats 8 Cons: Some interior materials not top grade, i.e. plastic wood. Gas thirsty.
When I traded in my 2002 Mercedes ML430 for a 2004 Touring MDX I may have lost some prestige, but I gained a considerably superior vehicle. The MDX is an interesting cross between an SUV, a sport sedan and a minivan (7 seats). It makes a lot of trade offs to be a vehicle that is very capable on many fronts if not outstanding in any one. You can take it off road - but do so with care. You will enjoy fast windy roads - yet here is an ultra safe soccer-dad's family car. It has only a V6, yet it is considerably faster than my V8 Mercedes. It's styling is not a head snapper but has solid good lines. It is a little pricey - but it will hold its value.
I hope they integrate iPods into future models. Auto-on headlights that can be adjusted to turn on at various levels of light would be nice.
My local dealer service is good.

Great SUV. Decent Gas Mileage. Honda Reliable.

Pros: good sound system, great navigation, good build quality, great SUV. Cons: small trunk when third row up.
I got this SUV for my wife to drive. She H-A-T-E-S to drive BIG cars. But, for some reason she doesn't get the same BIG car/SUV feeling from the MDX. In fact, she L-O-V-E-S to drive MDX. It's got a sporty feel to it. It has plenty of room. It gets decent gas mileage to it AND the navigation system has kept us from getting lost countless times. I can't say enough good things about this SUV.
Now the bad side... The trunk is extremely small for such a large SUV. This is especially true when you have the third row of seats up. So, don't expect this vehicle to take more than 5 people and luggage on a long trip. The rear row is also fairly cramped and should only be used for short trips and people 5'6" and under. However, most SUV's this size don't even have a third row.

Nearly flawless for the family

Pros: Handles like a car; plenty of room; decent mileage Cons: Pricey, especially options and accessories; uses premium gas
A great family "car", with the split hide-away rear seat offering plenty of space for cargo and/or passengers. A third seatbelt in the third row, like in the Honda Pilot, would have been nice, though. Has great interior and ride comfort, and a quality fit and finish. Don't take if far off road; it's not as tough as the "true" SUVs.
We also shopped the BMW and Mercedes which were even higher priced with fewer features. BMW and Mercedes don't have the reliability of Acura, either.
The navigation system, though a bit expensive, is great for the geographically-impaired (e.g., the spouse).
The dealer never really explained how we cut the waiting list. Our wait was only a month.

Pros: comfortable, easy to drive, spacious, lots of bang for your buck Cons: One feature that I'd like to have(but isn't an option)is an automatic door opener
We looked at the other SUV's in it's class (BMW, Lexus, Mercedes) and not only did we like the looks of this automobile the best, but it has all the bells and whistles the others offer but for a more reasonable price. We also like that it can seat 7. We drive it down to North Carolina every year with our 2 tots, and I still can't believe how much stuff we are able to pack in! Worth every penny.
