2002 Hyundai Elantra

by kstogz
Jan 18, 2010 (A Somewhat Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 10 Recommended: No

Pros: I haven't been able to drive it long enough to tell the pros.
Cons: Everything about this car is a con. I will never buy another Hyundai.
The Bottom Line: I would stay away from a Hyundai. It will drive you crazy.

"I bought my daughter-in-law a 2002 Hyundai Elantra. The salesman assured me it would be reliable for her. She hadn't owned it a month when the problems started. The check engine light came on and we could occasionally smell hot oil. It had a manifold ... read more

Apr 20, 2008 - Updated Apr 22, 2008 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Dependable, starts easily at -20, great MPG, over-all good vehicle.
Cons: Paint, body metal, plastic headlamp lens, resale value unless your the buyer.
The Bottom Line: A great car. Immaculate inside and out. 42,000 miles. Previously owned by an elderly gentleman who maintained it well.

I have driven this vehicle for 6 months and love it. No, I wasn't walking around for the previous 20+ years. I owned trucks. Other than a minor bit of front end vibration @ around 65MPH, a bit noisy especially since I don't use the stereo, (I know ... read more

Sep 9, 2006 (Not Yet Rated)

Author's Product Rating: 20 Recommended: No

Pros: Looks nice, leather seats, decent stereo
Cons: Everything else
The Bottom Line: I would not buy another Hyundai if my life depended on it. I would gladly sacrifice a little comfort for reliability.

When looking for a new car 4 years ago I test drove at least 20 different types. I fell in love with the Elantra GT and its features and comfort for long trip. I bought it brand new. Since it was my very first brand new car (I had always had used ... read more

Powerful, Affordable

May 18, 2005 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Safety features, Engine Power, Handling, Stock Radio
Cons: Engine/Cabin Noise, No standard ABS, Transmission Shifts, TPS, paint quality
The Bottom Line: I recommend this car because Its still running good after 60,000 miles and 3 years of my "abuse/joyriding" Its fairly reliable and provides good power for the price.

I have a 2002 Hyundai Elantra GLS which was bought brand new. It currently has 65,875 miles on it and it's still running great. This car was used to alleviate some of the gas costs which my 1995 Suburban were costing me. Overall the gas mileage of ... read more

Not bad for a starter car

by genesyxx
Mar 15, 2005 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Pricing, lots of standards, trunk space, head and leg room, Above standard engine
Cons: ABS not standard
The Bottom Line: Anyone looking for an economy/passenger car should DEFINATELY keep this in mind.

Truthfully, there is nothing I can say bad about this car. I've had mine for 1 1/2 yrs now (lots o' mileage) and it still runs with ease. Only problem I've had so far is a slight movement in one of my tire rods, but that was fixed without a problem. Qu ... read more

I do not like the Elantra.

Oct 27, 2004 (A Somewhat Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 20 Recommended: No

Pros: It's rather comfortable.
Cons: Everything else.
The Bottom Line: Find a good, reputable agency, and consider ALL other options before investing in this vehicle.

My first car was a 1991 Mercury Topaz. My god, that car went to hell and back with me. It was my mother's first car in the USA, and as a kid I remember driving from NY to Florida, from NY to Canada, etc, all in that tiny little blue vehicle that always ... read more

Best small car I've ever owned. In fact. Best car.

Nov 14, 2003 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Best value I could find. And I'm cheap. Everything works, and works well.
Cons: Crappy mileage. All round discs should work way better than they do.
The Bottom Line: I would highly recommend to anyone who is looking for a little known head turner with awesome value for money.

Yea, I've owned a ton of them and there's no doubt Hyundai have a cult classic here. Anyone who even knows this car exists will most likely say they like it. It has the good looks of a European sport hatch back with a fraction of the cost and a heap more ... read more

Great car for the money, but some problems with cosmetic wear

by littlequincy
Oct 31, 2003 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: reliable, lots of features, great value for the money.
Cons: Poor cosmetic workmanship. Multiple cosmetic problems.
The Bottom Line: Would definitely recommend the 2002 Elantra to others based on reliability, value, and warranty. However, I would caution potential buyers not to be surprised if cosmetic issues start creeping up.

I purchased my 2002 Elantra new 1 1/2 years ago. It currently has 16,000 miles. I originally bought it for its price, features and warranty. As other reviews have already commented, the 2002 Elantra is a great value for the money. It has similar fea ... read more

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Lively, fun to drive, wife likes it.
Cons: Tinny trunk, trannie's a bit weak.
The Bottom Line: If you're looking for a great car that won't break the bank, this is it.

From what I've said in my pros and cons, you would think I was of two minds about this car, but not at all. While there are things that I wish lived up to other car manufacturers levels, this car is an excellent buy. When I took the very car ... read more

Surprise Buy On The Slightly Used Market

by fenderbender42
Apr 11, 2003 - Updated Jan 6, 2004 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Low, low price, lots of interior space, full load of equipment
Cons: More interior color choices
The Bottom Line: This is an excellent buy on the slightly used market. Look at Hyundai dealers for the best deals, especially if you're looking for a low-mileage example.

When my oldest started high school four years ago, I made my four boys, now aged 18, 16-year-old twins, and 14, a deal: If they kept their grades up, stayed out of trouble and did their best to save for school, I would do my best to buy each of them a ... read more

Overall great deal!!!

by mhorowitz8
Feb 19, 2003 (A Somewhat Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Everything...Price, ride quality, warranty, features
Cons: Gas mileage can be better, CD Player breaks (yes, more than once!)
The Bottom Line: There is at least a $3000 difference in similarly equipped Civics and Corollas. Quality seems great so far, but with the warranty and price, it doesn't matter! Buy it!!!

This is now my third Hyundai in 3 years (my wife has the 2002 Sonata). I traded in my 1999 Elantra because I wanted a 5 speed to play around with. I needed a commuter car for driving into Manhattan everyday that I can beat on for the next 5 years and not ... read more

Feb 14, 2003 (A Somewhat Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: quite sleek high end car for a low price
Cons: small minor
The Bottom Line: My recommendation for this car is go out and buy it.

The Hyundai Elantra is a quite high end four door car with a rather low price. For most cars being close to the ground creates much road noise. In the 2002 Hyundai road noise is cut to a minimal amount. The car has a special car frame design to cut noise ... read more

Sep 17, 2002 (A Somewhat Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 10 Recommended: No

Pros: Decent bang for buck
Cons: Poor reliability record
The Bottom Line: It seems things are great for the first few 1000 miles, and then it's a toss up. You get what you pay for.

I nearly purchased one of these cars based on the reviews here. It makes for a good test drive and able handling. I see a lot of NEW (note caps) owners who are quite happy. However, prospective buyers should look at reviews for this car on carsurvey.org. ... read more

Sep 8, 2002 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Hatchback, roomy interior, lots of standard equipment, performance, fit & finish, Price!!
Cons: The lingering image of the Hyundai of yesteryear, high depreciation/poor resale
The Bottom Line: The roominess & utility of a small SUV, the comforts of a better sedan, and some features of a sports car. Hands down, the best NEW car under 15K

Although poor reliability and lack luster quality control have dogged this automaker in the past, Hyundai has truly come a long way. Firstly, the Elantra GT is fun to drive. The tuned suspension is firm yet forgiving. The four wheel disc ... read more
