Pros: Low price for a Land Rover, Plenty of rear seat room, Has a certain charm Cons: Lack of rear cargo room, feels heavy, odd ergonomics The Bottom Line: There are better SUV out there for the price. The Freelander is not a bad choice, but a Jeep Liberty is probably better.
If you haven’t been paying attention to the mini-SUV market, you soon will. Land Rover’s venture into the baby-ute segment is just more evidence (as if we needed it) that this new style of vehicle is the current hot ticket. Toyota virtually invented the...

Pros: Great off road, firm seats, easy to find in mall parking lot Cons: Terrible A/C!, gas mileage, no standard transmission available, small gas tank The Bottom Line: Great for off road use. Car-like handling on road. Ventilation system very very bad. Not appropriate for any place where one would need an air conditioned car.
At first I thought I'd like having an Land Rover. After all, it is of European design, and it stands apart from all the Honda CR-V's and Toyota RAV-4's on the road. As the weeks past after getting it, my wife and I realized that this car was not for...

Pros: Good off-road capabilities without on-road compromises. Cons: No seat height adjustment. Quirky ergonomics (though they do add personality). The Bottom Line: You'll either love it or hate it. If you're looking for just another Cute-Ute, look elsewhere. If you want a capable on and off road vehicle, you've found it.
I'll get straight to the point; the Freelander is a great, if a little quirky vehicle. The styling draws plenty of attention, the on road dynamics are similar to a european sport wagon, and it's the only vehicle in this class besides the Jeep Liberty...

Pros: Top-notch handling and braking. Best off road mini SUV. Great looks. Cons: Needs more power. Interior trim and door panels not refined. Low resale value. The Bottom Line: Freelander, like BMW and Audi, is a vehicle with character. For the combination of ride, handling, comfort, features and utility this is the best mini-SUV out there!!
Update: Jan 19, 2004 We have owned our Freelander for 18 months now. We have had very few reliability issues - although we must admit we have not taken it to its paces, on or off road. We are also blessed to have a good LR dealership who ...

Pros: Comfortable seating, heated windshield, excellent road manners, capable off-road Cons: Less cargo room than competition, could use a little more engine The Bottom Line: Great mix of on-road/off-road capability. Best on road handling in class. If you want that mix this is the only small SUV to buy, otherwise there are better choices.
I should preface this review by saying that (1)it is based on initial impressions gained from 1200mi driving including one 700 mi road trip and one short (2 mile) trip on a really nasty dirt road and (2) I was able to get an SE for $24,000 after a $3500...

Pros: Stereo volume control is cool. Exterior body style is very enticing. Cons: British Engineering at its worst, poor resale value. Lots of weird design decisions throughout. The Bottom Line: Save your money! Get a RAV4 or a Subaru wagon and get better engineering, mileage, reliability, and resale value!
I have to admit I was swayed by the ads and charmed by the boyish exterior of the frisky Freelander. It drove well in the test drive, but of course with the salesperson chattering away I couldn't *really* feel how it felt to drive. Well, $30K later ...

Pros: easy to get my child into and out of the vehicle; rear window goes down Cons: sluggish, cheezy plastic buttons The Bottom Line: I recommend the Freelander as a typical Land Rover product less expesive that the Discovery and it will fit into all parking garages.
I always thought my next Land Rover would be a Range Rover. I've had a Discovery since 1995. I traded in my audi A4 Avant to purchase a 2002 Freelander.
Funny thing is that I bought the Audi as a safe car for mom and the kid to drive around...

Pros: A nice looking car if a little cramped Cons: Lots of problems that sparked a recall The Bottom Line: Its not one I could easily Reccommend to people.
With its high profile adverts set as playful animals on the African Plains, the Freelander has enjoyed a very modern and fun filled birth into the lives of many Land Rove owners.
True, it is a very nice looking, if somewhat sporty car, that looks...

Pros: good looking, off-road capability, rigid chassis, Land Rover brand Cons: expensive maintenance, lots of noises, diesel version not powerful enough The Bottom Line: It makes 180km/h on highway and crosses rivers as deep as 40cm, with less than 10 litres/100Km, but be aware of excesses wich can have disasterous maintenance costs.
This is the less expensive and best good looking Land Rover ever. Unfortunately it's not a real all terrain vehicle, it has no low gears, not enough ground clearance and the diesel version is almost as powerful as my sister's Nissan Micra. The good thing ...

Pros: Not much, sorry. Cons: Transmission failure. Electrical Issues. Coolant Leaks. MULTIPLE trips to your local service department! The Bottom Line: $10,000 worth of out-of-pocket repairs at 65k is not normal. DO NOT BUY A FREELANDER. PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO READ MY ENTIRE POSTING.
First I'll preface that I have never written to an opinion board or forum before, and traditionally not a complainer. I just can't take it anymore and feel it is necessary to tell my story. Where shall I begin ... We purchased this '02 Freelander ...

Pros: None Cons: The whole car, run away as fast as you can! The Bottom Line: Run away! Land rover is of no help and these cars are so unreliable, that even for free its a bad deal
We trade cars a lot. We also have 6 cars for 4 drivers in house...Then there's the land rover sitting in the side of the yard... Its been there about a year now... Its blue paint covered with little black mold spots..I haven't tried to start it in 6 ...

Pros: Great in the snow. Comfortable seats. Corners well. Cons: Poor reliability. Poor ergonomics. Treated badly by dealer and LR. High maintenance costs. Low resale. The Bottom Line: Don't ever buy anything from Land Rover
I don't know where Land Rover ever got to be considered as a "prestige" Euro car maker. I owned a 2002 "S" for 2 years. I got fed up with the whole lousy experience and traded it in after only 13,000 miles. A week after I bought it, it had a oil leak. ...

Pros: A three year lease instead of four. Cons: Three years of misery. The Bottom Line: Run away and fast!
To finally buy a Land Rover and be this disappointed is such a shame.I have wanted a Land Rover ever since I used one in the California mountains outside of San Diego. What I never figured on were the insistent problems compounded by a lack of support ...

Pros: smooth ride, independent suspension, solid frame. Cons: only automatic transmission available in Canada, uneven distribution of a/c and heat. The Bottom Line: Before my purchase decision, I tried the Jeep TJ and Toyota RAV4, in contrast to those...I would recommend Land Rover's Freelander.
I got my Freelander at the beginning of May, 2002. The ride is nice, yet, it struggles a bit going uphill. It would be great if Land Rover could add more horsepower. The independent suspension adds great comfort for the passengers, this technology is...

Pros: Good looking, handles great when not in the shop Cons: Plagued with problems,Poor ergonomics, poor gas mileage, recalls, expensive repairs (even in wart. period.) The Bottom Line: DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT LAND ROVER! The most costly thing about the car is your time and the frustration of constantly breaking down as part of ownership.
FREELANDER- DON'T EVEN THINK OF PURCHASING THIS CAR!
Unless you have a lot of spare time to spend at the dealer, don't mind breaking down and don't get frustrated putting your car in the shop. Ever hear about all those maintenance troubles...
