2002 Lexus IS 300: Would be better as a Toyota

by mkaresh mkaresh is a Lead on Epinions in Cars & Motorsports, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 10
Feb 21 '02 - Updated Aug 01 '05

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Powerful, smooth engine, sharp responsive handling
Cons: Cheap, disjointed interior, uncomfortable rear seat that does not fold down
The Bottom Line: A disjointed, cheap-feeling interior holds back an otherwise fine car. New competitors are better at this price.

When I first heard Lexus was planning to offer a small, rear-wheel-drive sedan powered by a DOHC six, I was ecstatic. Aside from not offering a manual transmission until 2002 or so, this promised to come close to being my ideal car based on the early ...

Not just Japanese - It's JDM!

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Incredible tanklike build quality, RWD, inline 6, low depreciation
Cons: Small size, intrusive traction control, poor fuel economy, high ownership expense
The Bottom Line: The perfect choice for that small segment of the market looking for a small, fun, reliable, RWD Japanese sports sedan. Also, the only choice.

I owned the 2002 Lexus IS300 from May 2005 through May 2006, when I decided to sell it due to a forthcoming addition to the family. This is my review of that car, basically a 1 year road test. IS300 HISTORY First, it's important to understand this ...

The 2002 IS300 5sp Sports Sedan

by ricsgarage

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Toyota/Lexus build quality, great handling, great motor and the manual transmission transforms the car.
Cons: Gas mileage. Takes premium. Needs a sixth gear.
The Bottom Line: Great sports sedan. Great car for couples and families with small children that don't grow. Highly recommended for drivers with sporting intentions.

This article is being written by an owner of the vehicle, not a reviewer. I hope this is useful for prospective owners. I am a Toyota guy, I had been looking for a sports sedan from Toyota, and this car was the answer. I have been drawn to the ...

2002 LEXUS IS300: A great alternative to the Germans in a pretty and affordable package

by vs100r
Nov 28 '01 - Updated Jan 13 '02

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Build quality, Boy racer looks, Price, Lexus reliability, Fantastic interior styling, Handling
Cons: Auto/manual Gear box in manual mode, very tight in back, not much more
The Bottom Line: This may be the first mainstream Japanese car for people who love cars. It's not perfect, but it's very good.

First of all let me start by saying that I am not a big fan of Japanese cars in general. They tend to be well built and reliable but are also usually boring, lacking soul and have some very specific styling treats that turn me off. This car is an...

E-Shift is an E-Ticket

by BrianCam Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 200
Apr 28 '02 - Updated Apr 29 '02

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Awesome Handling, Fun E-Shift, Great Looking Inside and Out
Cons: Price, Lack of Rear Seat Room
The Bottom Line: This has always been a good sport sedan, the E-Shift makes it more sporty without losing the convenience of an automatic.

What happens when an excellent luxury auto maker goes “slumming” in the sub $30,000 segment of today’s ultra competitive new car market? Surprisingly a very competent sport sedan that will appeal to young and old alike.

Lexus make...

IS300: Merely a Toyota with Lexus Badging!

by spdster2002
Sep 26 '02

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: spirited acceleration, agile
Cons: looks too familiar, EPA fuel economy, controls for navigation system, rear-seat room, small trunk
The Bottom Line: The IS300 is an attractive $30,000 sport sedan with a few nice luxury features added to give it an extra measure of elegance.

First shown at the North American Internation Auto Show, the Lexus IS300 as we know it was introduced in 2000. The car, or at least the styling, has existed in the Japanese and European market before the IS as the Toyota Altezza and Lexus IS200...

Lexus IS300: long term review

by iamian
Oct 18 '05

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: cost, handling, acceleration, dependability, styling, garage door-opener, soundsystem
Cons: fuel mileage, plastic interior, suede interior, pearl color paint option, storage space.
The Bottom Line: would buy this car again because of dependability, quality, Lexus-image. Also, unique looking cars are hard to find and the SportCross is one of them.

I have had the car since new and it is now 24 months old. It now has about 35,000 miles on it and is driven about 10 miles per day for work. My wife is the primary driver, but she tells me all about her experiences, as she loves the car. Comfort: ...

2002 Lexus IS300: A Japanese 3 Series Fighter?

by zegers330
Mar 24 '02

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Buttery-smooth engine, very good handling, sporty styling, excellent reliability, nice sound system, great value.
Cons: Low on space, some low-rent interior trim, lacking certain features, somewhat sensitive throttle.
The Bottom Line: Just shy of BMW-level performance, the IS300 breaks ground with its fresh styling, great handling, smooth-revving engine, and overall value, but a higher-quality interior is needed.

Let's see if we can get inside the heads of Lexus executives, just to see what their game plan has been all along. When Toyota first created the Lexus brand more than 10 years ago with the LS400, they seem to be targeting Mercedes-Benz. The first LS400...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: E-shift, powerful, and affordable luxury.
Cons: Back seating uncomfortable, dash may become cluttered with GPS.
The Bottom Line: Excellent affordable luxury car - handles extremely well and is very appealing. Plus you have the reliability of the Toyota/Lexus name brand.

My friend bought this car one week ago. I must say that this car handles and rides extremely well. It has a very appealing look, interior is extremely nice, and you also get nice power. The inline V6 provides enough power for any driving circumstance....

Great car, hot hot hot

by rag133
Nov 11 '01

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Acceleration, Styling, Interior, Handling
Cons: Rear seat doesn't fold down
The Bottom Line: If you want a car with unique styling, has a great engine, comfortable interior, and handles like a dream, this is the car to get.

The Lexus IS300 is a fine automobile, great in so many ways. The styling of this car is a real head turner, especially when it comes in yellow or red. It may take a little getting used to though, as some think it looks "weird". I really like it...

A Lexus-Beamer!

by luckydoc Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500
Jul 01 '02

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Comfortable front seats and a very smooth ride.
Cons: It has no character of its own, almost an exact replica of a BMW.
The Bottom Line: Not that this car is a bad automobile. I just feel that for $30,000.00 plus it should have a style of its own.

The Lexus IS 300

A Lexus-Beamer!

Of all the Lexus I have driven this is the one that least inspired me.

Not that it is a bad car, to me it is just as if the designers at Lexus ran out of ideas and decided to copy ideas...

The "Altezza" Finally Comes to the U.S.

by Christofu
Oct 25 '01

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Excellent Acceleration, Smooth Shifting, Strong Braking, and Absolutely Beautiful, Inside and Out.
Cons: Will the IS 300 become played out and trite? We'll see.
The Bottom Line: Excellent car, a winner for its class. Can seriously compete with BMW, Audi, and Mercedes. True value inside and out, and definitely under the hood.

The 2002 Lexus IS 300, known as the Altezza in Japan, has finally come over to the U.S. in manual transmission form. Man, it makes all the difference. I test drove a friend's, yes, it took awhile for me to beg him into it. Let me tell you all about...

Best Compact Sports Sedan for the Money

by C4iGrant
Oct 29 '02

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Handling, Acceleration, Sound System, Looks and Price
Cons: Memory Seats, Audio Controls on Steering Wheel
The Bottom Line: Price, Price, Price! Drive the others and then do a apples to apples comparison!

I would like to first go over my pros and cons. The handling on this car is outstanding to say the least. I just sold a 99 Honda Prelude (which was rated as one of the 10 best handling cars on the road) so I am familiar with how a car should hold the...

Positive review after 4.5 years

by drzippy
Mar 16 '07

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: See the review above
Cons: It's no Prius. I get 19MPG with my aggressive driving. Fortuntely has a 17Gal tank.
The Bottom Line: Buy it. Fun, luxurious, and pretty. In almost 5 years I've had to spend ZERO on repairs. I like the pre-06 look more than the new design.

I own the Wagon version of the IS, called the SportCross. Only about 3800 of these were sold in total over the four years they were available, so it's just awesome to drive such a unique design. When I drove this baby cross country I got compliments at ...

Aug 27 '02

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Peppy engine, Lexus luxury, E-Shift option
Cons: Small
The Bottom Line: If you are looking for a nice riding, smaller luxury car, you probably won't go wrong with this car.

I've been leasing a Lexus IS 300 for a out a month now.

I like it so far. I have had minimal trouble.

Things I like:

Distinctive interior with metal accents
Climate control
Suede Interior - a nice change from...
