Pros: Excellent front seating, Easy to read instrumentation, Wide tires. Cons: Price, Quality control, Powertrain, Amount of standard equipment. The Bottom Line: Value is just not here. This is not a bad car by any means, however Mazda needs to ditch the base models or revise them at no extra cost.
When it comes to economy cars I expect more 'today' than I ever have. With the Toyota Corolla, Dodge Neon, Hyundai Elantra etc. etc. all coming fresh out of the factory in 'bare bones trim' with equipment...

Pros: Excellent vehicle with very few drawbacks. Cons: Legroom for the rear seat is at a premium. The Bottom Line: The Mazda Protege SE is a very well built car and for anyone who do not need to do too much highway driving it can be an excellent choice.
A Solid Performer Mazda protege SE, 2002 For 2002 Mazda increased the power of this highly rated compact sedan. They have done away with the 1.8-liter engine and replaced it by a 2-liters one that will develop 130 horsepower thus giving the ...

Pros: Style outside and in, handling/braking, exceptional interior/options, spacious/comfortable & good trunk. Cons: Likely fuel numbers will be less than competition, rougher ride at low speed. The Bottom Line: I've owned Ford & GM, Japanese car makers have been doing compact for so long, they just quite simply have the edge here.
My last two cars have been Subaru (one excellent experience and one less than but that's life, I still remain a fan of Subaru) but when shopping for a new car I had to admit that living downtown in a large city I really don't need AWD, gas is $$ in ...

Pros: Excellent performance, value, fit and finish, 50,000 mile warranty, style Cons: Poor stock tires, odd tire size, resale value The Bottom Line: Excellent value
**Update** I no longer have this car. It was flooded by four feet of water from Hurricane Ivan on September 18. The loss of the car doesn't negate it's positives. I went out and bought a used 2002 Protege PR5. ** I purchased the 2002 Mazda ...

Pros: Roomy, Moderately Peppy, Good Design, Good Handling, Sporty, Good Suspension, Good Warranty, Comfortable, more... Cons: Not a land rocket, Lack of "lock/unlock" button on passengers side The Bottom Line: All in all, in comparison to the cars in the same price range the Protege comes out on top. It's affordable, reliable, comfortably quick and wont chew through gas.
Starting off... We were stuck with a 2000 Ford Ranger on a 3 year lease, and although it's a good truck it's a truck and not what we were looking for. We had originally purchased it in MN, and there we fealt as if we needed 4x4. ...

Pros: Superlative handling, great engine, roomy and comfortable, good looks Cons: Well let's see..... hmmmm.... The Bottom Line: Quick and nimble and totally comfortable. The Protege could be my next car and my THIRD Mazda!
After years of driving used cars with 100K plus miles, it is almost finally time to buy my first new car. The small car market has been dominated by a few main cars, the Honda Civic, the Toyota Corolla and the Ford Focus. But what about Mazda's entry,...

Pros: Handling, Room, Design, Fit and Finish Cons: Gruff engine, not very economical The Bottom Line: A great handling, roomy, well made car, saddled with a slightly unwilling engine. Fuel economy could be better.
I always liked Proteges. They were fun cars with zesty engines and good handling and braking. Sure, they weren't as economical as Civics or Corollas, but the only Civic I would look at was the 92-95 EX Sedan. I even had second thoughts about my Mazda...

Pros: Very sporty; drives like a European car; roomy; good looks; wonderful value Cons: dubious cup-holders; no place to toss trash; the cloth seats look a little thin. The Bottom Line: A car highly recommended by friends. After comparison, I learned why. If it's as reliable as reputed, it would be hard to find a better value.
I was looking primarily for a very reliable, long-term, everyday car to replace my Civic. The loyal Civic had replaced an antiquated and trusty Accord. Entering the car market, I consequently saw myself as a confirmed Honda owner. For my work, I've also...

Pros: price, inside space, power engine, style Cons: noisy The Bottom Line: It is not a family car as Corolla. I think it is designed for persons who want enjoy driving on the road, and want something different from others.
Feel good to be the first one to write commends on Protege 2002. First of all, it is a nice car in its price range.
I have been waiting to buy a new Protege for one year, since my home is just 5 minutes walking from my office... Two days after...

Pros: Handling, driving position, styling, fun-to-drive, PRICE Cons: Buzzy engine, a bit rough riding, fuel economy The Bottom Line: An excellent car for those who want some excitement in their compact car. VERY highly recommended!
Epinions won't allow me to review the same product twice, despite radical differences in the trim and equipment levels. This is the original review I wrote of a 2003 Protege LX 5 speed. I am moving it to the 2002 Protege as I recently bought a VERY ...

Pros: Handling Safety - ABS and side airbags are standard Reliability Gas mileage - low 30s w/regular gas Cons: Tires CD player won't play burned CDs The Bottom Line: This has been a great car. It does everything I want it to do and never fails to make me smile.
I bought my Protege ES new in Sept of 2002 to replace a wrecked 2000 Honda Civic LX as my daily driver. I have owned Hondas, Alfa Romeos, and a BMW, but in my opinion, this one has them all beat. It doesn't seem to have quite the power or the build ...

Pros: Price, Reliability, Economical, Look, and Feel! Cons: Slightly loud on highway and bad wet weather tire traction. The Bottom Line: The Mazda Protege LX 2002 is a great purchase and has a great look and feel with all you need in a car.
I consider myself the average Joe Shmo, therefore I am not going to bore you with all the technical jargon. I am just going to give you my OPINION of what I think of the car I bought.
The price is awesome. The actual price I got mine for is...

Pros: Good looking, reliable car, can be easily tweaked. Cons: Very tight suspension, fuel economy could be better. The Bottom Line: This is a good car, it's a good value used as well, just shop carefully.
In 2002 I had to replace my Aging 1994 Ford Escort. It was in it's death throes as far as the transmission was concerned. And since I was happy with that car I replaced it with the Protege since the cars were the same in many ways. And I've been happy ...

Pros: Attractive styling in&out
Good power in low gears
Sporty suspension
Cons: Bad location for shifter
Cabin noise
Lacks power in 5th gear
The Bottom Line: I find it to be a terrific car and a great alternative to the Nissan Sentra, Toyota Corolla, or Honda Civic.
Much nicer.
My 2002 Mazda Protege ES has around 45,000 miles, and not a problem since, its fairly roomy for a compact car, and gets good mileage when driven properly (I average 25 mpg). Dash is comfortable and pleasant to look at, all though the shifter (for the ...

Pros: Very reliable and maintenance free (102,000 miles), great handling, CD player, roomy and comfortable. Cons: Road noise and acceleration The Bottom Line: If the 2002 is as reliable as the 1999, you wont be disappointed if you prefer handling over ride quality.
I purchased a 1999 Protege LX, right after the new (and now current) body style was released for about $13,500.00 and haven't been disappointed since. I've driven over 75,000 trouble free miles and the car still drives like new. (With new tires and regul ...
