Pros: Exterior finish, Price, Gas mileage, Reliability, Local service. Cons: Interior cloth colors and patterns Terrible! Rear windows don't go all the way down. The Bottom Line: Excellent wagon for the money, although the vehicle handles OK on the interstate, it is probably more at home for around town use. I highly recommend this vehicle.
Body panels, doors, and windows all have a good fit. The doors close solidly, with no leaks. Paint and finish, excellent. Tires and wheels nice looking, more than adequate for a family wagon.
Although equipped with a 4-cylinder engine, the vehicle...

Pros: price, gas mileage, & styling Cons: low power engine The Bottom Line: I recommend this car because you get what you pay for.

Pros: peppy engine, cute looks (I suppose) Cons: no long-term reliability
I was looking for an inexpensive car to drive 120 miles per day in. I bought a new 2000 Esteem new three years ago. I'm posting here so hopefully people will read this and choose the Mazda Protege. I now have 90K miles, and have had 3 significant probems. 1) Fuel Vapor Recovery System - this problem took over a month for the Suzuki dealer to diagnose. $200 dollars and a month without a car, what a loss 2) Clutch burned up at 68K miles. Okay heres the deal...this is my third stick shift car, and I didn't buy it to race, or run hard. My miles are highway, and the clutch should not have gone up so early. $650 repair 3) Ignition Coils at 87K miles. Heres the deal, there are no spark plug wires on this car, there are coils on each plug. They are $200 each (plus labor) to replace. Unbelieveable. I still have 2 years to pay on this car, and I have doubts it will make it that long...
