2002 Prius Has Some Big Problems

by JMB623 Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000
Sep 18 '05 - Updated May 17 '09

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Ultra low emissions, good gas mileage, nice car for the money.
Cons: Eats expensive tires, technology failures expensive, tax deduction being phased out.
The Bottom Line: Wait for technology to be perfected to avoid prohibitively expensive repairs and inconvenience.

I bought this car new in 10/02 while looking for, and failing to find, a Toyota Echo for a commute car. The Echo is a tiny gas-engined Toyota that gets over 40 mpg and, at the time, cost about $10K less than the Prius. $10K is a lot of gas, even at the ...

The official green car!

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: environmentally friendly
Cons: pick up is a bit slow... not a lot of room
The Bottom Line: While others are in traffic watching their gas tank drain/minute, you are comfortably pondering at which fancy restaurant you'd like to treat yourself to dinner that night.

I am the biggest conservationist you will ever meet I have to say. I'm not insane or anything but I definitely do my part supporting the green side of every action I do. When I first became aware of the idea of a vehicle being readily available to the...

Disappointed with hybrid tech

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 1.0 Recommended: No

Pros: MPG, quiet, roomy
Cons: reliability, MPG
The Bottom Line: Do not buy this car without absolute faith in your Toyota service department.

When the Prius was released in the US in 2000, I couldn't wait to get one. I test drove one when it came out, and was floored by the roomy interior, quietness of the engine, LCD display, mpg rating...this was the car of my dreams. The only negative I...

Pros: Excellent workmanship, new clean air technology.
Cons: Poor visability for the driver. Very basic exterior body.
The Bottom Line: I enjoyed driving the Prius and it is a great car for commuters and for running errands in and about the city.

Toyota Prius 2002

Give to Caesar, what Belongs to Caesar.

Any member who has been reading my reviews knows that I am not a big fan of Japanese cars. There are two reasons for this, first in the early 70’s I owned a Datsun, (now they...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Clean, great mpg, stealth mode, Toyota quality.
Cons: small 12 volt, soft OEM tires.
The Bottom Line: Well put together car that carries the quality expected from Toyota. Test drive one, you'll like it.

Car is very cool. In my 9 months of ownership I haven't had one single issue. The first 5 services visits are FREE.. yes, FREE. That includes oil changes (unknown if this holds for 2004). Although you may have to point this out to the dealer doing ...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Ultra Low emissions, 100X lower than an SUV, Great mileage, I get 50+ MPG
Cons: My quibbles: no cruise control and no folding back seat
The Bottom Line: With 50 MPG, ultra low emissions, fun to drive and a $2000 tax break, The only other car I would even consider buying is the new Honda Civic Hybrid.

I have had mine now for just over a year and have put about 23,000 miles on it. I have read other reviews of folks getting far lower mileage than I do. I typically get about 50 to 51 miles per gallon commuting in the San Francisco area. My commute is...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Great gas mileage, cool technology, tax breaks
Cons: Lousy cup holder, long wait for delivery
The Bottom Line: If you're in the market for a roomy and practical compact car that will impress your geek friends as well, Prius is the one.

I learned about the Prius in a magazine article in March 2001. After a test drive of the 2001 model at my local dealer I decided to order a 2002 model on June 1st. I finally got the car on November 6th. Supposedly the waits are getting a bit shorter now,...

2002 Toyota Prius... The Ultimate Commuter Car

by tuyenvo
Jan 07 '02

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Great gas mileage and good for the environment
Cons: Fairly expensive for an economy car, plus little quirks detailed in the review
The Bottom Line: If you can stand the 3 month wait and need an economy commuter car, this is the one to get.

I just picked up my 2002 Toyota Prius 2 weeks ago and can't stop driving it. I'm actually finding excuses to run to the store just to take it out for a spin. All in all, I'm greatly satisfied with the car minus a few small quirks which I'm sure will be...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Gas Mileage, Low Emissions, Styling, Price
Cons: Badly designed controls, Missing basic features, no improvements since 2001 model
The Bottom Line: While I'm excited about the future of hybrid vehicles, I would recommend waiting for a more practical model to be released.

I wrote this review of the 2001 Toyota Prius almost a year and a half ago (in September of 2000), and it received a lot of attention. According to Toyota's web site, there aren't any improvements (or even changes, for that matter) between the 2001 and...

Pros: Good in Wreck! MPG's, Clean, Comfortable, Fun, Cruise, 6 CD Changer.
Cons: Poor controls, rattles in doors and dash, non-linear braking, distracting lcd.
The Bottom Line: I now know that it holds up well in an accident. Read the reviews and consider all angles. I will be buying the redesigned 2004.

On July 2, 2003 an irresponsible driver clipped me in the right rear while on the interstate driving 60mph. I went out of control and hit the wall on my left at 60 or so.
Both airbags went off, the right one breaking the windshield. The...

Ideal around-town/commuter car

May 26 '02 - Updated Jun 01 '02

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Eco-friendly, excellent design, surprisingly roomy, fun to drive, and great tax breaks!
Cons: Probably not a good idea to repair at any place other than Toyota.
The Bottom Line: Perfect complement to the family minivan. Great mileage on trips to school, work, shopping. All necessary features are standard. Excellent design and quality. Tax breaks keep cost reasonable. FUN!

Our 2002 Prius just passed 1000 miles, and it’s proving itself as an ideal around town and commuter car. The “Super Ultra-Low” emissions were a selling point for us – setting a good eco-friendly example for the kids seemed like a good idea.

2 Years later, still glad I got the Toyota Prius!

Jun 30 '03 - Updated Aug 12 '04

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: mileage, comfort, low emissions, envy of my coworkers
Cons: no center armrest, everyone wants to ride in my car!
The Bottom Line: buy it for economy, enjoy it for comfort, but be sure the dealer's service department is good since you can't usually service it elsewhere.

After 2 years of driving my Prius in the city and on the highway, I still love it! When driving short stop/start trips, I get about 40 mpg, but with 20 minutes or longer of driving in the city, I'm averaging just below the posted mileage of 50 mpg. ...

Pros: coolest car I have ever seen. SULEV emissions, mileage, touch screen, fancy features all over
Cons: It doesn't come in a convertible
The Bottom Line: My recommendation is to go give it a test drive, that's the best way to be convinced.

I've been crazy about this car since I read about it a year and a half. I finally bought it a month ago.
SULEV emissions rating stands for super ultra low emission vehicle, which is next up from zero emissions. It gets the lowest emissions of any...

Pros: Safe, economical, great warranty, super CLEAN, quiet, quality product. Cruise control.
Cons: No fold-down back seat, no hatch-back, no sun-roof (yet!). Tires supplied wear quickly.
The Bottom Line: Economy, long-life-expectancy, quality built-in, cleanliness, good aerodynamics, and super quiet ride, plus the greatest warranty for such hi-tech. A bargain at TWICE the price!

I am thoroughly pleased with my Super-White 2002 Toyota Prius. Although I am a tall man, I find the car fits me fine and is very comfortable. The Prius design philosophy is consistently applied throughout the car. Weight is kept down to help fuel...

Pros: Great commuter/around town car. Handles well, great gas mileage.
Cons: Does not have acceleration on demand.
The Bottom Line: Jump on the bandwagon to reduce pollution, get great gas mileage, handling and dependability of a super car...this is a trouble free car and soooooo cute!

In addition to looking great (my car is Hello Kitty blue/green), it runs like a top. Of course, I do not expect to have the acceleration that I had when driving my last 6 cyl. Acura, but what the hey - I get over 55 mpg. The more the push on the...

Pros: Fascinating and just plain different!
Cons: Seat comfort is lacking
The Bottom Line: If you're energy-conscious or appreciate cutting-edge technology and like small cars. This is IT! You won't save any money on gas 'cause your gonna drive it every chance you get.

As an engineer "wanna-be" I am obsessed with energy use and waste. This car came from my dreams and does what I would have designed a car to do. If you've read down this far in the reviews you have a good idea what and how it does what it does, so I'll...

Toyota Prius, 2002

Mar 11 '03

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Fuel economy, low emissions, fun
Cons: No fog lights and none available.
The Bottom Line: Go for it! It's fun, it's a good car, and it's good knowing you're doing the right thing. Even the government thinks so -- it's giving a $2000 tax rebate.

We loved if from the day we bought it, which was December 27, and more all the time. As the price of gasoline goes up, so does our smugness at having bought this car when we did. [This reminds us of the jokes about how the Prius runs not on gas but on...

Pros: Fun and pleasing car which I enjoy very much.
Cons: Works great for smaller families but may not be large enough for others.
The Bottom Line: I love my '02 Prius and wish this model were still in production because it's that pleasing.

My '02 Prius is the best car I've ever had, and there have been many others. I love it's size and shape and maneuverability. It's dashboard design is very pleasing to my eye. It's great for commuting to work and for errands. I took it on several ...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: "Cool" factor, low emissions, gas mileage, turns on a dime, great resale value
Cons: Stock tires, stock starter battery, pick-up and cornering, relatively loud at highway speeds, cargo space
The Bottom Line: I highly recommend the Prius if you're looking for a commuter car.

I bought the Prius as a commuter car in 2002. The "cool" factor, low emissions, and good gas mileage were the main reasons I chose it. When the time came to sell it to get a bigger car in 2007, I was sad to see it go. The recommended service ...

MY CAR IS AWESOME!

Pros: Great gas mileage, Super low emissions, corners good.
Cons: Have to keep the tires above 40 lbs. or else they won't last.
I bought my car to save money, but a bonus is that it doesn't pollute. Somehow I don't mind the fact that I only visit the gas station ever 550 miles. I haven't had any trouble with it at all.

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 1.0 Recommended: No
Pros: Fairly good gas milage (not as high as advertised)
Cons: Every repair is very expensive and it broke more than most cheap american cars.
I had this 2.5 years and put slightly over 75000 miles on it. During this time, I had to replace six tires (despite scheduled rotations), one gas tank, a windshield wiper that sheared off ($100), several gaskets, and the transmission ($8400). Nothing was covered under warranty. I financed the car over 4 years and ended up owing almost $9000 with the car being broken. During the 2.5 years, it completely broke down three times. Toyota dealer and the national office basically said "sorry for your bad luck". MPG was ~40 for mainly highway driving and it takes plus gas, which comes out to about the same gas costs as a corolla. Not recommended!

2002 Prius Hybrid Battery Failure
by cjm120
Feb 09 '04
Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 1.0 Recommended: No
Pros: None at the moment
Cons: Hybrid Battery Failed at 4700 miles.
I own a 2002 Prius which I bought new in Nov 2001. At 4700 miles, on January 23 2004, the hydrid battery failed.

I had no inkling that the battery was failing. But my garage was filled with such a stench I thought my sewer line had broken. Turns out the battery emits sulfur dioxide when it fails - ergo the stench.

I am really disappointed that this happened, even though the cost of replacing the battery was covered under the Toyota Warranty. Now I do not feel like even keeping the car. In short, I am completely turned off by the car now; even though I loved it before the hydrid battery failure.
