Pros: Excellent MPG, Powerful, Quick, Fun to Drive, Comfortable seats, Great Stereo! Cons: Not many... The Bottom Line: A great car that puts the fun back into driving, and cuts your gas bill in half at the same time! I actually enjoy the commute to/from work, now.
This is my second VW TDI. My previous VW was a 2001 VW New Beetle TDI (see my other review). I'm equally impressed with the Golf. It is truly everything I expected it to be.
Economy - Imagine a car that is quick, powerful, sporty, and...

Pros: Comes fully loaded with standard features. Cons: Not too found of the interior color. Very small sideview mirrors. The Bottom Line: The Volkswagen Golf is an excellent vehicle and it is without hesitation that I recommend it.
The Volkswagen Golf GLS, 2002
Compact and Loaded to the Max.
Even if the size of this VW product puts it in the compact category, it still comes fully loaded with standard features and the price tag also comes with it.

Pros: Solidly built, roomy interior and a bargain price. Cons: Quality issues and service. The Bottom Line: A good alternative to gas hogging SUV's and a heck of a lot cheaper, but quality isn't what I expected.
I've owned my Golf GLS for about eight months now so I can objectively assess it's pros and cons. My Golf came generously equipped with the usual; A/C, P/W, Cruise, CD, moon roof and a funky shifting auto transmission.
I found the Golf to be an...

Pros: fuel efficiency, agility, great brakes, good build quality, comfort at long haul. Cons: lack of body rigidity, rattle, squeaks; bad dealers service in California but great in connecticut The Bottom Line: The best commuter's car. Watch out for dealer service stations inexperience with TDI service. Use all synthetic oil for DIESELl (not gas) engines such as Delvac from Mobil.
I have a 2002 TDI GLS for 3 years (53K miles), and so far, I am very pleased. A perfect commuters car, very fuel efficient but performs like a much higher powered car due to the impressive torque and the power curve characteristics of a diesel engine ...

Pros: Handling, Mileage, Interior Space. Cons: Reliability, Service The Bottom Line: Make sure it is on warranty.
Overall The safety of a VW is something we are all looking for and one can always feel comfortable with. But when it comes to the reliability somethings are left to be desired! Body Though it appears small the weight and solid construction of ...

Pros: Thought it was OK, but... Cons: 5000 miles and I've got trouble. VW customer service has made me feel worse. The Bottom Line: I WILL NEVER BUY A VOLKSWAGEN AGAIN. I AM CONSIDERING CHEWING MY OWN ARM OFF TO BE AWAY FROM THE ONE I HAVE. RUN AWAY NOW!
Notice how most of the other reviewers never came back and updated what they wrote? Most people had their cars just a few weeks when they wrote their reviews and they were all smiles over their shiny new cars, so was I. But now I've had my TDI Golf for ...

Pros: great suspension and steering, satisfying interior, excellent brakes, safety Cons: unimpressive gas mileage for 115 hp, dangerously protruding door frame corners, unreliable ignition system/electrical The Bottom Line: Wonderful driving experience, but consider the reliability issue carefully.
I bought my second Golf (2002 GLS automatic, 2.0 liter gas engine) new in early 2002. After nearly 4 years and 41,000 miles, it became the first car I was actually sad to sell. (The first Golf was a 1999 GTI VR6, a good car but different from the GLS ...

Pros: security system, space, mileage, safety Cons: seat dials, little annoying glitches The Bottom Line: I recommend this car because its safe and reliable and not so stealable and thus far - they have serviced any issue that has come up for free.
I purchased my 2002 VW golf - 4 door (FYI- the size of the car is the same whether you buy a 4dr golf or a 2dr golf- a fact I found interesting when I was researching my puchase) New in 2001 - because they had sold all their 2001's and they had 2002s in ...

Pros: Stylish, luxury interior, quality fit and finish, holds value Cons: Awkward blind spot, fuel economy The Bottom Line: A wonderful little city car with tonnes of personality and class. Except for a few quirks, I am completely satisfied.
I just got my first Golf, a 2002 GLS, automatic. (Canada)
It was 8 months old. This probably applies to 2003 as well since they are exactly the same in Canada.
I have had it for almost 2 weeks and here are my initial observations.

Pros: Fit and Finish, Quality Materials, Handling, Fuel Economy Cons: A bit pricey; scarcity of TDI's makes bargaining difficult The Bottom Line: Reccomended for those who like fun small cars that aren't as ubiquitous as hondas or toyota's - call ti "Affordable german luxury"
When i started looking for a new car, my first test drive was a new MINI cooper. Although i liked the cooper, i found the inside to be alot of flash on a little cash - that is, cheap materials put together in a way to look more expensive. I also found...

Pros: Great sound system, remote control keys Cons: Seats aren't the greatest, world's stupidest drink holder The Bottom Line: This is a fun little car that people (especially chubby men) will stare at jealously in intersections. beep. beep.
This car is quite a step up from my previous tin can, a 'Toyota Tercel. The Golf is quiet, fun to drive, and the stereo system is great. Remote control locks seem like an annoying affectation when other people use them, but now I wonder how I lived...

Pros: MPG, Styling, Reliability Cons: Refueling, Price, Firm seats, Emissions, cost of oil changes The Bottom Line: The biggest downside to VW's is the purchase price (read the reviews on Carpoint, etc).
Just purchased a TDI Golf in Jan of 2002, I've been watching the ads for several years and one of the local dealers listed a GLS TDI automatic for $15,999, so we picked one up. I own a V8 diesel Chevrolet van & owned an 89' diesel 2 door Rabbit for 3...

Pros: Stylish, fun to drive, VW name Cons: Awkward blind spots, drink holder The Bottom Line: This is definitely a fun car to drive! I recommend it to anyone.
I used to own a 1999 VW Jetta and I loved the car. Yet the Jetta lacked the options that we desired such as cruise, power windows, Monsoon stereo, etc. So we looked into trading our Jetta for another Jetta, but Golfs always seemed to attract me because...
