Pros: European style
Cons: Not a real European Car; cheap copy.
The Bottom Line: Save your money for a BMW. You will thank your self later.

This car seemed to be a good car when I bought it, but slowly I began to notice problems. The first problem I had with this car was the brake fluid. It had black sludge floating in it. So I drained it out and put in fresh fluid. Next thing that went ...

The Bottom Line: 11 repairs in 16 months, stay away from this car...

Pros: Fuel Economy
Cons: Poor Quality
The Bottom Line: Don't buy. This car is loaded with problems.

Listen to the title, think about it, and then read my story.

So, I thought I would be cool and buy a VW Jetta TDI. I thought I knew what I was getting into, until problems started. At 4750 miles, my oil drain plug was stripped from the...

Lemon

Pros: When the car is in working condition acceleration and handling are above average.
Cons: In repair shop 5 times in first 14 months. Lemon.
The Bottom Line: Avoid it. 5 visits to repair shop in first 14 months. 8 previous years with problem free Hondas. Enough said.

I did my research prior to leasing my 2002 Jetta 1.8T and according to the experts and most owners the consensus was "good car". Mine isn't.

I've had mine for 14 months and it has been in the repair shop 5 times. The coils have went on 2...

Pros: Plenty of power; Cool interior lighting (purple and red).
Cons: Lot's of warranty problems & recalls; major wind buffeting noise; shifting is not smooth (automatic)
The Bottom Line: It's too bad there aren't more diesel cars on the market because the diesel engine is great technology. The package around the engine... Plagued with problems.

I purchased a 2002 VW Jetta Wagon TDI. The first problem, which I was told could not be fixed, was the tremendous wind buffeting noise that occurs when the windows are down. I am constantly having to adjust the windows (sunroof, front, and rear) at...

Never Again

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 1.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Comfortable, fun to drive
Cons: completely unreliable
The Bottom Line: Well, I'll never buy a Volkswagen, or Audi for that matter, again, but maybe you'll have better luck. A bit of a gamble for a 24,000+ new car though.

Purchased new in February 2002, since then it has left me stranded 3 times with a faulty ignition coil. There has finally been a recall on them, but it does nothing to restore my faith in the car. The first two times happened within two weeks of each...

Pros: Warranty - iffy Stereo (when it works) Handles quite well - nice pickup
Cons: Rattling Repairs Denial of warranty repairs
The Bottom Line: Wouldn't buy or lease a Jetta again. Just too many problems for me to want to try it again.

After many long, wonderful years with my 1991 Honda Accord EX, I had to finally break down and get a new car. The transmission finally went kaput. I started out looking at Honda's, Toyota's, Mitsubishi's and the like. I just didn't find anything ...

Pros: Styling, Amenities
Cons: Reliability, Reliability, Reliability, Reliability, Reliability, Reliability, Reliability, Reliability, Reliability, Reliability,
The Bottom Line: For me - it's "STAY AWAY". I know that based on my service experience and the Reliability of this car - I won't be looking at VW again.

After buying my first new car ever (1995 Jetta GL) I was hard core sold on VW's products. I even sold VW's for a short time at a dealer in Kentucky. When it was time to replace my wifes aging jalopy with something newer, there was no question in my ...

Can Mexicans build German cars like in the old country?

by Northern_sage

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 1.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Styling, turbo, fuel economy
Cons: terrible quality control, indifferent dealers
The Bottom Line: VW ruined a beautiful car with miserable quality control in the construction line.

I have been a VW owner for decades, having had a 77, 81 and 86 Westfalias, a 95 Passat wagon, and two 70's beetles. (All German built). Since I was in the market for a city car for my family and newly licenced daughter I thoroughly researched my options...

Pros: good engine, nice interior materials
Cons: mechanical failures, squeaks/rattles
The Bottom Line: If you're looking for trouble-free transportation, move on.

I purchased my 2002 VW Jetta 1.8T based on Volkswagen's reputation for making quality automobiles. This was my first foreign car purchase, and I have not been impressed thus far. Since purchasing the car in May 2002, I have had the car serviced for the...

My First and Last VW Jetta

by canada2007
Apr 08 '07

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 2.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Comfortable to drive, fairly roomy, nice styling, , better than average warranty
Cons: Excessive engine oil consumption, sunroof leaking, difficult to get VW to deal with problems
The Bottom Line: Will not buy another VW.

Bought a 2.0 litre 2002 Jetta GLS new. Has about 50,000 miles on it now. Fully serviced by the VW dealership since it was purchased. Piston rings had to be replaced (fortunately while still under warranty) at about 30,000 miles due to excessive oil ...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Stylish, TDI engine, mechanical reliability, handling
Cons: Road noise, price tag, after-sale service.
The Bottom Line: You might want to consider other manufacturers if you are looking more for durability and reliability. The Jetta is definitely not up to its price tag

Updated: 17-09-2005 I purchased my Volkswagen Jetta GLS 2002 in February of 2005, and without any doubt I believe that it has been the worst purchase of my life. There are many reasons why I wished to abandon this vehicle, some much more important ...

Pros: Unique styling, quality interior materials, acceleration with 1.8T or VR6, German feel
Cons: Cramped rear seat, chassis skittish at the limit, poor reliability
The Bottom Line: If you are attracted to the Jetta’s styling, interior ambiance, and German character, and do not require an adult-sized rear seat or reliability, then this is the car for you.

My sister finally bought a Jetta, and I’m finally reviewing the car. She didn’t start out looking at the Jetta. She started out really wanting a VW Passat. (Click on the blue hyperlinks to read my reviews ...
