Pros: Excellent styling, features similar to a 3-series BMW, quick, low cost maint. Cons: Cramped rear seating... not many others I have experienced The Bottom Line: Buy this car. Get the 1.8T version if power is an issue. It still gets great gas mileage and I can smoke all rice rockets!
Prior to the September 11th tragedies, I was in the market for a car. I have driven anything you can think of, and have owned Fords, Volvos, etc. My crappy 96 Mustang Cobra, although stylish and neck snapping fast, had finally crapped out on me. The...

Pros: 200-hp VR6 finally gets exciting! 5-sp tiptronic transmission, ESP Cons: Rear seat still too small, front nose/light design looks bland and outdated The Bottom Line: You cannot find a better combination of power, quality, and technology for the money in this market segment.
Note: This is an update to my original review of the current generation Jetta which was introduced in the U.S. for the 1999 model year and has remained relatively unchanged since. Please read my original review here:

Pros: Fast (1.8T), Great factory sound system (Monsoon), Expensive Car Feel (Feels like a BMW!) Cons: Wheel crank seat recliner, bad cup holder position, velour seats are lint magnets. The Bottom Line: Get it. You won't be disappointed if you like a high performance car for the price of an economy car.
Was shocked when I first test drove this car. The turbo really kicks in and you will never ever have any problems coming up to speed on the freeway onramps or passing cars on rural highways. I'm still too scared to see how fast it will go. Haven't even...

Pros: tight handling, great acceleration (1.8 turbo), looks great inside & out Cons: little squeaks & rattles, poor car prep The Bottom Line: pleasure to drive, beautiful car, safety, reliability (I hope), cool, well thought out features (ex.blueis dashboard lighting)
After much research I bought a 2002 Jetta 1.8 turbo. I read a lot of unhappy messages about reliability of VWs, but I noticed that as time moved on the complaints decreased. There were fewer complaints about 1999s than there were of 1998s, and fewer...

Pros: Excellent value for the price. Great performance, handling, fit and finish. Cons: Smallish backseat. Overly trendy. The Bottom Line: With this one you're getting the feel and amenities of a much more expensive car fully loaded for less than 25 large.
Ridden in a Jetta before? A over-grown bug for yuppy 20-somethings? Not impressed? Well, so was I until I drove the 2002 model. For 2002 the GLS model with the 1.8t engine gets 20 more horses bumping it up to 180. VW gives it a new 5 year warranty this...

Pros: Fuel economy, power, fun to drive, not hard to look at. Cons: Annoying quality issues, small rear seat area. The Bottom Line: Excellent commuter car, excellent fuel economy, good resale because no one wants to sell.
I have owned this car for 6 years and love it. I purchased this car for the fuel economy and have been laughing as I pass by the pumps especially over the last several years with $3/gal fuel prices. Depending on driving habits it will delivery 45 to 55 ...

Pros: Solid car, great features, great resale! Cons: Lots of hidden fees in the lease - acquisition fee, disposition fee, etc. The Bottom Line: Consistent quality and design of a German car, price and value consistent with American compact/midsize. Best value for my money!
Recently I leased a new Jetta, as my Ford Focus lease is up in a couple more weeks. I was considering the Honda Civic EX and the Mazda Protege' 5, as these were both in the same price range as my Focus. I decided to look at the VW Golf, too, so the VW...

Pros: Turbo-charged engine :)German enginered Cons: Window regulator, 2.0 engine is more like 2.slow The Bottom Line: If you want a quality car, that is affordable and sporty, buy one now :)
I have had the fortunate opportunity to purchase a 2002.5 Volkswagen Jetta 1.8T recently. It is by far my favorite car. I have had it for a little over 3 months and it never stops impressing me.
For 2002 the engines have been changed but the...

Pros: Fun to drive, sporty/luxurious family wagon, safety features Cons: A little pricey but worth it The Bottom Line: Get it for the look, feel, German engineering and VW safety reliability.
We got the GLX VR6 (standard leather w/power everything) with the sports suspension package and I absolutely love driving it and looking at it! My husband, who drives an SUV and complains whenever he doesn't, has fallen in love with it too.

Pros: Sporty, Peppy, Stylish, Lots of Space, Cons: Limited space for CDs, gas mileage, reliability? The Bottom Line: The jury is still out for me, but everything I have read about this car...good and bad...is coming true.
I knew I wanted a wagon and really shopped around. The positive aspects I had read about the car are certainly true. It's a great looking car with a smooth ride. I bought the 1.8L turbo and it is peppy! I love turning on the lights at night as the...

Pros: Fun to drive, peppy diesel, solid engineering, european suspension, stylish interior. Cons: NON-EXISTENT backseat, VW customer service is horrible, expensive maintenance The Bottom Line: Buy this car for its efficiency and long-life of the engine; otherwise, you will not recoup the above-average cost. Finally, do not purchase if you need backseat room.
I bought the 2002 Jetta TDI used in May 2004 (so I cannot speak to any issues prior to that mileage). It had 34,000 miles on it at the time. She now has just a notch over 90,000 miles, and has had surprisingly few problems. I was told by numerous ...

Pros: Tons of power, great styling, enough options to satisfy anyone, cargo space for days! Cons: Not designed for the comforts of large/tall people. The Bottom Line: While not for larger drivers or passengers, the 2002 Jetta Wagon delivers great performance in a stylish, sporty, and very functional package. Plenty of room for the dog(s), too!
Just picked up this baby a couple weeks ago (May 2002) and can't find enough reasons to go out for a drive. I bought the 1.8L Turbo GLS with a manual transmission (I'd avoid the rather gutless 2.0L standard engine). Options included on mine are the...

Pros: acceleration (1.8t); handling, appearance (17" alloys) Cons: nothing that wouldn't be nitpicking The Bottom Line: The Jetta GLS 1.8t leaves the competition in the dust. It gives you plenty of power and great handling, and above all else, it's fun and reliable.
The 2002 Jetta GLS 1.8t is a great car. I went to the VW dealer having done extensive research and knowing exactly what I wanted. They had the car I wanted on site, and as soon as I pulled out of the lot I knew the car was mine! The acceleration is...

Pros: Mileage (TDI), monsoon stereo, snazzy interior Cons: Rear seat is smallish, but liveable. The Bottom Line: Autobahn cruiser for four AND 50 Mile per gallon! HELLOOOOO? Is there even a question here?
Well, this is my fifth VW, and this time I opted for the TDI diesel engine. Our "other" car is a 2000 Beetle 1.8T, and I was worried that the diesel wouldn't have the performance I've come to really enjoy. Nothing could be further from the truth. You...

Pros: Fun car to drive.
Handles well.
Controls well-positioned.
Comfortable. Cons: Unreliable. Mass airflow sensor problems. Peeling plastic interior. Radio quit. Crappy cup holder. The Bottom Line: Bought this car used and wish I hadn't. Love the handling and look, but am afraid it will cost a fortune in problems. Buy this one new, not used.
I bought a used 2002 Jetta TDI 9 months ago and I love several things about it: the handling, the style, the ergonomic positioning of the inside controls - this is a fun car to drive. I HATE the fact that I have had numerous problems in the nine months ...
