Pros: Quality of interior materials, German feel, rear seat room Cons: Chassis and interior not suited to aggressive driving, cloth seats poorly padded The Bottom Line: A German Camry. Great as a family car. Unfortunately, the chassis and interior are not suited for aggressive driving, so for a sports sedan look elsewhere.
For my personal car I tend to like moderately-priced sports sedans, and the Passat is supposed to be one of the best of these, perhaps the best. Many glowing reviews have been written about the Passat, by everyone from Car & Driver to ...

Pros: Superb Engine Choices, Excellent Fit & Finish. Roomy. Loaded with Standard Options. Cons: Pricey. Heavy steering. Jittery ride on rough surfaces. The Bottom Line: The few problems I've experience with the Passat force me to give it an Above Average rating. You're likely to see this as the 'Excellent' car it really is.
During my recent trip to Florida, I had the pleasure of driving around my father's new 2002 Volkswagen Passat GLS Sedan. Having been a fan of coupes my whole life, I was a little reluctant to give the Passat a fair shake, despite being the one who...

Pros: * Excellent value
* Distinctive style
* Thoughtful features
Cons: * Limited rear seat comfort
The Bottom Line: This is an excellent mid-sized sedan for families and drivers looking for a sporty yet reliable car.
The 2002 Volkswagen Passat GLS sedan I bought on September 9, 2001 was the first new car I ever owned. I cant say that it was love at first sight, though I did think her Reflex Silver exterior and sleek silhouette was quite appealing. It took just ...

Pros: AUDI wannabe, Quality, Triptronic, Interior space, Styling, Warranty, Meaty V6, Visibility Cons: AUDI wannabe, Styling, Not quite a tight handler The Bottom Line: Quality, style, room, great powertrain, sexy look, reasonable price and German assembly. Just buy it.
Many words have been written about this wonderful piece of German worksmanship. And it's only fair that most of those words are of praise. This is a truly great example of the cars Detroit should build but just does not... VW decided to go upscale with...

Pros: Looks, solid structure, acceleration, handling, value, fuel economy, no sales pressure Cons: Narrow tires, no sport package, no wood trim with 1.8T, instrument cluster lighting The Bottom Line: I like Passats looks, solid structure, its handling, value, fuel economy (1.8T manual), ability to have manual transmission and ...
I have been planning on a test drive of the VW Passat for a while. The original idea was to check out Audi A4, but then I found out that the Passat uses most of the same hardware, also has excellent crash protection, lots of space and costs less.

Pros: Fit, Finish, Styling, German Construction, Safety, Fuel Economy Cons: marginal reliability, minimal turbo lag, paint scratches easily, water leaks The Bottom Line: A good car with marginal reliability. Safe, solid, & well built but potential electrical and mechanical problems could prove to be headaches.
UPDATED 7/12/06 Let me first say that this was not my first or last German car. There's just something about the European design that attracts me to it. I am fully aware that German cars need to be "attended to" more than their Japanese & American ...

Pros: Germanic fit n finish, good looks, safety features, smooth ride, resale value Cons: Pricey, turbo-lag on 1.8T, dealers, short seat cushions, overrated stereo The Bottom Line: Great for its class, but not the near-luxury sedan its made out to be. Add 25 hp, a sports package, and improve the seats and
I'd take another look.
The 2002 Volkswagen Passat covers an incredible price range, from the low $20,000's to almost $40,000. This is amazing, since it's basically the same chasis throughout the model line, with differences mostly in engine power, trim items, and additional...

Pros: Beautiful fit and finish, drives like a true German, very roomy & a great value Cons: 4motion V6 gets less than great gas mileage The Bottom Line: The Passat has it all, balanced fun and refinement, offers all the features, comfort and performance of cars much more expensive, and delivers at an affordable price.
I recently decided it was time to treat myself to a new car. I had made a significant life change (moving from NYC to the suburbs), had always been a car buff, and moving gave me the opportunity to finally get a brand new car for the first time in my...

Pros: Beautiful styling, lots of gadgets, solid car Cons: A little underpowered, need more storage space in front, fuel economy The Bottom Line: This is a great car. You can spend more on Audi, Volvo, Saab, BMW, Mercedes, etc., but all you'll get is an upscale nameplate and a thinner wallet.
This review is for the 2003 Volkswagen Passat Wagon, which just came out. I bought the car on July 27, so I've had it for about a month now. My understanding is that the only difference between the 2002 and 2003 models are that the new model has an...

Pros: Blue-light dashboard, 4-Motion, triptronic, driver response, traffic-stopper for less than 30k!! Cons: More horsepower, radio reception, standard cd-changer, constant complements The Bottom Line: The triptronic system gives you the best of both worlds AUTO for everyday driving and semi-manual for performance handling through those winding roads. Great Car.
Firstly, let me start off by saying, I initially was interested in the Audi A6 2.7t Quattro. In my humble opinion the best damn SPORT SEDAN out there. Now this was before I test-drove and eventually bought a VW PASSAT GLS V6 with 4motion. This car is...

Pros: Refinement, styling, fit & finish, road manners, smooth V6, available 4Motion, safety Cons: 4Motion only available with automatic transmission, V6 power and fuel economy could be better The Bottom Line: It won't be as reliable as a Camry or Accord, but the enthusiast will find that it is much more fun to drive and more satisfying to own.
The 2002 Volkswagen Passat GLX offers a unique blend of attributes. It is a driver’s car, with a smooth V6 and better handling characteristics than its Japanese counterparts. The Passat feels like a solid and well-built German sedan. I see the...

As an avid car enthusiast I have paid a lot of attention - especially over the past two years - as I neared (and eventually reached) the time of my first new car purchase. Sure, I had owned other cars, but I had finally reached a point where I was...

Cons: Rain sensing wipers, auto-dimming rearview mirror, AM radio reception The Bottom Line: This car is absolutely the best value around. I can assure you, that based on my experiences, I cannot ever see not being a fanatical Passat owner.

Pros: Tight build quality, 4Motion, Tiptronic, Entry-level luxury Cons: CD not standard, gets pricey when loaded, minimal internal storage space The Bottom Line: Highest saftey ratings from Consumer Reports and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, plus the obvious build quality and fun driving experience, make this car worth every penny.
What a fun car to drive! I wanted a car under $30k that was fun to drive, reliable, safe, and had most of the convenience features found on more expensive luxury cars. The 2002 Passat is it. The GLX comes basically loaded. The only options to add are...

Pros: Amazing utility, awesome style, and it really is a driver's car! Cons: VW lacks the cachet of other German marques, 5-speed apparently not available with W8. The Bottom Line: This is the best "Appliance" I've ever owned!
You know, I've never quite understood why exactly it is people follow trends. Leisure suits and SUVs are two of the worse fads that come to my mind. My girlfriend owns a C5 Corvette for weekend driving, but like a million other Americans, she bought an...
