A step up from GM and Chrysler products, Still a Step behind the Japanese

by UncleJimbo
Dec 07 '03 - Updated Jul 18 '04

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Big engine, safety, advanced traction control, and power dual sliders.
Cons: Too much engine noise and hit-or-miss service departments.
The Bottom Line: Windstar is a solid performer with a long history. Lease one and wait to see if the Freestar lives up to the Windstar legacy.

(UPDATE at the bottom of this review) With a family our size, there are very few vehicles that will fit everyone comfortably with room enough for the luggage. We started on the minivan kick in 1998 with the GM "dustbuster" on wheels, the Chevy ...

Pros: Very comfortable, lots of extras for a good price!
Cons: Rear defroster and trunk are picky!
The Bottom Line: I would recommend this to family who want the extra room and great comfort for in town or on trips!

In 1998 we purchased a Ford Windstar and loved it for our growing family. With 4 children we needed the room. We were so impressed that we decided to purchase a Ford Windstar 2003 this year.

We purchased the Ford Windstar 2003 this March for...

The Bottom Line: Hands Down, the best Minivan on the market!

Well, since I wrote my last review I was a Store Manager for a cell phone company here locally and now I have moved on to Ford New Car Sales. Therefore, I hope my epinion is taken seriously because I have a lot of product knowledge.

A beautiful vehicle but TOTALLY Unreliable

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 1.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Beautiful paint and Car
Cons: Beauty is skin deep. Underneath is junk.
The Bottom Line: DO NOT BUY - RUN, do not walk away from this vehicle!

Our 2003 Windstar is a beautiful vehicle. Maybe it has too many bells and whistles but to us it has been a lemon. We are on out third VCR (and this one will not rewind now) because Ford will only give you a "REBUILT" unit under warranty. The rear ...

What a MISTAKE

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 1.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Dual sliding doors
Cons: Transmission failed in 3 year old car, other repairs were very expensive.
The Bottom Line: While you may get lucky and find a Windstar without massive problems, I wouldn't count on it. Save yourself a headache and SKIP THIS CAR.

We bought a used 2003 Ford Windstar about one year ago. About 2 months after we bought it we had to pay $700 to fix the BRAKES. Seems there was some huge problem with them, and after a 3rd opinion we decided we'd just have to pay. Argh. But the big ...

Had my first Windstar for 9 years had to get another one

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Good solid ride, room for 6 adults comfortably
Cons: Sensor occasionally give false warnings. Not very fuel efficient
The Bottom Line: This was the last year of the Windstar and the used market is flooded with them so you should be able to get one at a good price.

We purchased a used 2003 Windstar last summer after owning a 1995 for almost 10 years. My only hope is that this one will last as long. Our main reason for choosing another windstar was past performance. I find that the Windstar has a firmer ride than ...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Comfortable, plenty of power.
Cons: Bench seats are a pain to get out alone.
The Bottom Line: The new Freestar is the old Windstar refined. So if your looking for a new one, go with the Freestar and you won't be dissappointed.

88,000+ miles on our '03 and only 1 problem, one of the door sensors isn't registering the door closed, so the light stays on indicating a door open and the interior lights don't come on. Kind of a minor thing, but annoying. About 85,000 I changed the ...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 1.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Good crash test ratings, good for trips.
Cons: poor quality, uncomfortable seats, ugly exterior design, some features are unreliable.
The Bottom Line: Don't buy it. It is not as good as other vans and SUV's. Just rent it for trips. Otherwise, get another car.

This car is not a very good car. It has decent handling for it's large size, but does not compare to ...

FORD, good for 3 years then falls apart
by kdraks

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 1.0 Recommended: No
Pros: Big, roomy, powerful engine
Cons: Reliability, Reliability, Reliability
Fords are great cars if you don't plan on keeping them past the 3 year warranty. Having scaled back on quality, the windstar (and my Explorer) both fell apart immediately for things that should not be a problem. Just after the 3 year warranty expired my Windstar's vacuum system neede to be rebuilt (Ford had a tech bulletin on this = guess that's why it cost $700), the idler arms had to be replaced, the abs system has now failed and the car is 3.5 years old. I know that come 75k miles the transmission will go because this is THE common problem with most larger FORD vehicles.

Poor Quality; Poor Resale Value

Pros: Only good for the first 24 months!
Cons: Falling apart after 24 months!
If we had known better, we wouldn't have purchased the 2003 Ford Windstar.
We bought it brand new, and had no problems at all in the first two years. Then it started to fall apart. We could hear high pitch noise when we turned the steering wheel while the engine was running.
Had the parts replaced at a Ford Dealership at no cost since the van was still under warranty when it first showed troubles after 23 months.  3 years later, the same exact problem resurfaced. This time, we were not so lucky since we were out of warranty. Paid nearly $400 to have it fixed! Check engine light was also on at the time.
Within 6 months, more problems show up; the check engine light was back on; the brake/ABS lights was on and off; electrical problems with the clock and the power windows that were also on and off.
Brought it back to the dealership, and it was gonna cost us nearly $900 to fix the engine problem, not including the brake/ABS problem!!
Enough is enough.
We brought it to carmax to get rid of it, and it was only valued for $2000!!!

Enjoy for couple years

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 2.0 Recommended: No
Pros: comfortable, big space
Cons: Not reliable
I have this car for 4 years, 56000km It is very comfortable during driving, a lot of space. The negative side is reliability. Some small things are falling pretty often: pipe licking, air bag light on/off, manufacturing recall for back sits, break rotors change after 40k etc. The last thing was the front windshield crack. The Ford service explained that it is probably because of low temperature (O Canada!) but cannot be replaced under warranty.

Not recommended.
